Book excerpt: How does it happen that two people can be experiencing the same circumstances and conditions on their mission trip, and one person is having a great time, while the other is miserable as can be? And how can one short term mission team prepare so diligently for the practical ministry they'll be doing and be so ineffective as a group, while another team that seems less polished or skilled makes a huge mark in the culture they visit? Could it be that the heart preparation is more important than it is given credit for? In "Before You Go," experienced short term mission leader and trainer Jack Hempfling takes you on a 40 day journey that will bring you face to face with attitudes and issues that if not addressed, can make you or your group ineffective on the field. Get the most for your short term mission effort, finances, and preparation by getting your hearts ready. Walk with the Lord through this devotional and be equipped, informed, and made ready to joyfully pierce the darkness with all that you do. "I wish someone had given me a copy of Jack's book when I was first starting out" - Peter Warren, Director, Youth With a Mission, Denver "Wonderfully done ... Book Preparing Tomorrow s Missionaries Today

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ultimate missionary training center is in our homes," declared Elder David A. Bednar in his 2019 address, "Prepared to Receive Every Needful Thing." Member missionaries-parents, children, youth, and leaders-of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recognize that in order to play their part in gathering Israel, home-centered preparation is vital.Preparing Tomorrow's Missionaries Today is a practical, intuitive, and fun approach to become a courageous member missionary now, and for some, a more successful full-time missionary soon. In other words, a most effective disciple of Jesus Christ at home and abroad. This book addresses a dilemma all who want to be faithful member missionaries face, especially those preparing to serve full-time: "How do I share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others in a comfortable and natural way?" In traditional, Church-supported missionary training centers, those who have been called to serve are generously and ably taught what to say. Within these pages we assist home-centered missionary training centers by teaching the reader how to say it. Following the instructions within Preach My Gospel and modern-day prophets' teachings, in this volume tomorrow's legion of missionaries will learn valuable communication skills using friendly methods honed from the authors' years of experience. This is their contribution to making homes more effective missionary training centers-a supportive tool for those who want to confidently proclaim beloved truths near and far.

Book Mission of Sorrows

Download or read book Mission of Sorrows written by John L. Kessell and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1970 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mission of Guevavi on the Santa Cruz River in what is now southern Arizona served as a focal point of Jesuit missionary endeavor among the Pima Indians on New Spain's far northwestern frontier. For three-quarters of a century, from the first visit by the renowned Eusebio Francisco Kino in 1691 until the Jesuit Expulsion in 1767, the difficult process of replacing one culture with another—the heart of the Spanish mission system—went on at Guevavi. Yet all but the initial years presided over by Father Kino have been forgotten. Drawing upon archival materials in Mexico, Spain, and the United States—including accounts by the missionaries themselves and the surviving pages of the Guevavi record books—Kessell brings to life those forgotten years and forgotten men who struggled to transform a native ranchería into an ordered mission community. Of the eleven Black Robes who resided at Guevavi between 1701 and 1767, only a few are well known to history. Others—such as Joseph Garrucho, who presided more years at Guevavi than any other Padre; Alexandro Rapicani, son of a favorite of Sweden's Queen Christina; Custodio Zimeno, Guevavi's last Jesuit—have the details of their roles filled in here for the first time. In this in-depth study of a single missionary center, Kessell describes in detail the daily round of the Padres in their activities as missionaries, educators, governors, and intercessors among the often-indifferent and occassionally hostile Pimas. He discusses the Pima uprising of 1751 and the events that led up to it, concluding that it actually continued sporadically for some ten years. The growing ferocity of the Apache, the disastrous results of certain government policies—especially the removal of the Sobaípuri Indians from the San Pedro Valley—and the declining native population due to a combination of enforced culture change and epidemics of European diseases are also carefully explored. The story of Guevavi is one of continuing adversity and triumph. It is the story, finally, of explusion for the Jesuits and, a few short years later, the end of Mission Guevavi at the hands of the Apaches. In Mission of Sorrows Kessell has projected meticulous research into a highly readable narrative to produce an important contribution to the history of the Spanish Borderlands.
