Book Preparations Properties and Applications of Periodic Nano Arrays Using Anodized Aluminum Oxide and Di block Copolymer

Download or read book Preparations Properties and Applications of Periodic Nano Arrays Using Anodized Aluminum Oxide and Di block Copolymer written by Kunbae Noh and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-ordered arrangements observed in various materials systems such as anodic aluminum oxide, polystyrene nanoparticles, and block copolymer are of great interest in terms of providing new opportunities in nanofabrication field where lithographic techniques are broadly used in general. Investigations on self-assembled nano arrays to understand how to obtain periodic nano arrays in an efficient yet inexpensive way, and how to realize advanced material and device systems thereof, can lead to significant impacts on science and technology for many forefront device applications. In this thesis, various aspects of periodic nano-arrays have been discussed including novel preparations, properties and applications of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) and PS-b-P4VP (S4VP) di-block copolymer self-assembly. First, long-range ordered AAO arrays have been demonstrated. Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) process allowed a faithful pattern transfer of the imprint mold pattern onto Al thin film, and interesting self-healing and pattern tripling phenomena were observed, which could be applicable towards fabrication of the NIL master mold having highly dense pattern over large area, useful for fabrication of a large-area substrate for predictable positioning of arrayed devices. Second, S4VP diblock copolymer self-assembly and S4VP directed AAO self-assembly have been demonstrated in the Al thin film on Si substrate. Such a novel combination of two dissimilar self-assembly techniques demonstrated a potential as a versatile tool for nanopatterning formation on a Si substrate, capable of being integrated into Si process technology. As exemplary applications, vertically aligned Ni nanowires have been synthesized into an S4VP-guided AAO membrane on a Si substrate in addition to anti-dot structured [Co/Pd]n magnetic multilayer using S4VP self assembly. Third, a highly hexagonally ordered, vertically parallel aluminum oxide nanotube array was successfully fabricated via hard anodization technique. The Al2O3 nanotube arrays so fabricated exhibit a uniform and reproducible dimension, and a quite high aspect ratio of greater than ~1,000. Such high-aspect-ratio, mechanically robust, large-surface-area nanotube array structure can be useful for many technical applications. As a potential application in biomedical research, drug storage/controlled drug release from such AAO nanotubes was investigated, and the advantageous potential of using AAO nanotubes for biological implant surface coatings alternative to TiO2 nanotubes has been discussed.

Book Characterization of Nano arrays Fabricated Via Self assembly of Block Copolymers

Download or read book Characterization of Nano arrays Fabricated Via Self assembly of Block Copolymers written by Marianna Shnayderman and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focused on methods for regulating arrangement of self-assembled block copolymers by understanding fabrication conditions and their effects on the polymers on flat and patterned substrates. Block copolymer self-assembly is a simple and low cost process for creating lithographic masks with features under 100nm in dimension. These patterns can be transferred to more permanent materials for applications in electronics, magnetic devices, as well as sensors and filters. Polystyrene-poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane) block copolymer thin films were characterized in terms of their spin curves, PSF spherical domain cross sectional area distributions, and correlation distances. Optimal fabrication conditions were selected from studying polymer behavior on flat substrates and then used for templated substrate studies. Substrates that were templated with grooves produced quantized numbers of rows of spherical domains ranging from 4 to 7. Behavior in these grooves was characterized in terms of groove width constraints, cross sectional domain area distributions, and row ordering. For all templated arrays, the lengths of ordered regions were more than 2 fold higher than the diameters of ordered regions of arrays on flat substrates. The characterization accomplished in this work will be used to compare block copolymers with similar volume fractions of the blocks that allow sphere microdomain formation but of different molecular weights. The ultimate goals are to establish how the molecular weight of this block copolymer affects its self assembly on templated and on flat substrates and to use this factor as well as fabrication conditions and template geometries to engineer arrays with desirable properties.

Book Fabrication and Applications of Nanocomposite Structures Using Anodized Aluminum Oxide Membranes

Download or read book Fabrication and Applications of Nanocomposite Structures Using Anodized Aluminum Oxide Membranes written by Andrew Isaac Gapin and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the field of nanotechnology continues to advance and device feature sizes scale down to ever smaller dimensions, it is becoming increasingly important to develop quick and efficient methods for large-scale production at the nanoscale. Creating such a template would have widespread uses in areas such as magnetic data storage, chemical sensors, and mask technology. One promising approach to realizing this goal may lie in utilizing the self-ordering behavior found in porous anodized aluminum oxide (AAO). This material offers many advantages such as the ability to customize the pore diameter and spacing and easy device integration based on its compatibility with silicon substrates. The pores of the AAO templates can be filled with many different materials via electrochemical deposition or other methods to produce numerous potential devices. In this work, current research results detailing the fabrication of AAO templates and their use in creating ~100 nm tall CoPt, Ni, and composite Ni/CoPt nanowires is demonstrated. The synthesis of such nanostructures may ultimately be advantageous for new types of patterned magnetic recording media. The Ni nanowires exhibit relatively soft magnetic coercivity of 242 Oe, while the CoPt nanowires show a very high coercivity of at least 10.97 kOe, measured in the perpendicular direction along the nanowires axis. The composite soft magnet / hard magnet Ni/CoPt nanowires exhibit intermediate perpendicular coercivities depending on the relative amounts of Ni and CoPt. The Ni80nm / CoPt20nm nanowires showed a coercivity of 1.96 kOe, the Ni50nm / CoPt50nm nanowires had a coercivity of 3.59 kOe, and the Ni20nm / CoPt80nm nanowires had a coercivity of 5.10 kOe. This marked decrease in the coercivity is significant because it could facilitate easier magnetic data writing. Analysis of the magnetic properties of the various nanowire structures and their dependence on the processing parameters is presented. A method for utilizing the AAO structure to replicate a master stamp for nanoimprinting technology is also discussed. In addition, plans for future work and a discussion of the application of these fabricated structures towards magnetic recording technology are presented.

Book Nanostructure Science and Technology

Download or read book Nanostructure Science and Technology written by Richard W. Siegel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timely information on scientific and engineering developments occurring in laboratories around the world provides critical input to maintaining the economic and technological strength of the United States. Moreover, sharing this information quickly with other countries can greatly enhance the productivity of scientists and engineers. These are some of the reasons why the National Science Foundation (NSF) has been involved in funding science and technology assessments comparing the United States and foreign countries since the early 1980s. A substantial number of these studies have been conducted by the World Technology Evaluation Center (WTEC) managed by Loyola College through a cooperative agreement with NSF. The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), Committee on Technology's Interagency Working Group on NanoScience, Engineering and Technology (CT/IWGN) worked with WTEC to develop the scope of this Nanostucture Science and Technology report in an effort to develop a baseline of understanding for how to strategically make Federal nanoscale R&D investments in the coming years. The purpose of the NSTC/WTEC activity is to assess R&D efforts in other countries in specific areas of technology, to compare these efforts and their results to U. S. research in the same areas, and to identify opportunities for international collaboration in precompetitive research. Many U. S. organizations support substantial data gathering and analysis efforts focusing on nations such as Japan. But often the results of these studies are not widely available. At the same time, government and privately sponsored studies that are in the public domain tend to be "input" studies.
