Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance. – Romans 5:3 It is as much our interest as it is our duty to be awakened out of our pleasant but most pernicious drowsiness. Troubles will be so much more sinking and intolerable if they take us by surprise. Just as expectation spoils earthly comforts by sucking out much of its sweetness beforehand so that we find less in it when we come to the actual enjoyment, so the expectation of suffering eases much of the dread and terror by accustoming our thoughts beforehand and making preparation for them. If prepared, we do not find suffering so grievous, overwhelming, and intolerable when it does come. It is not the design of this book to frighten anyone with imaginary dangers, much less to sow jealousies or stir up discontentment for the times. But, it is lamentable that the tokens of God’s anger produce in most of us no fruit other than bold censures and loud clamors rather than humiliation for our own sins and the due preparation to take up our own cross and follow Christ in His suffering. The only goal of this book is to provide a better understand of the purpose and function of suffering for the sake of Christ. Should we not be of those who sincerely resolve and prepare to be followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises (Hebrews 6:12) and take them for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience (James 5:10)?

Book excerpt: The apostle Paul often taught young converts to the Christian faith that 'we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God' (Acts 14:22). For first-century Christians suffering for Christ was an inevitable accompaniment to a life of serious discipleship. In many parts of the world little has changed since those early days. But in the West, Christians have long enjoyed a period of unusual rest from such troubles. However, there are ominous signs that change is on the way. Suffering 'for righteousness' sake' may once again mark the lives of faithful Christians in the West. In this exposition of Paul's words, 'For I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus' (Acts 21:13), John Flavel shows us how vital and excellent a thing it is to prepare ourselves for the onset of sufferings.

Book Keeper of the Great Seal of Heaven

Download or read book Keeper of the Great Seal of Heaven written by Adam Embry and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2011-01-12 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puritan pastors of the seventeenth century were true physicians of the soul, and this is made readily apparent in Adam Embry’s study of John Flavel. In Keeper of the Great Seal of Heaven, Embry shows the prominent themes of heavenly mindedness and the work of the Holy Spirit in Flavel’s life and pastoral ministry. He goes on to evaluate Flavel’s teachings about the Spirit, explains Flavel’s view on the sealing of the Spirit, and compares Flavel with other Puritans. Embry further traces the significance of Flavel’s theology of the Spirit in the American Great Awakenings, gives an evaluation of Flavel’s exegesis relating to the sealing of the Spirit, and concludes with an insightful pastoral reflection on the material. While this study reveals a diversity of thought within Puritanism, it also underscores the profound commitment this spiritual brotherhood shared for treating the matter of the heart with biblical truth in dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Download or read book Suffering and Sovereignty written by Brian H. Cosby and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2012-12-29 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Flavel wrote extensively on the subject of human suffering and how it relates to divine sovereignty. He himself experienced great suffering through the deaths of three wives and a son and continual persecution from state officials. Because many of his writings deal directly with the theme of suffering and because of his own experience with it, Flavel is a significant resource for understanding a Puritan theology of human suffering and divine sovereignty. In this book, Brian H. Cosby examines John Flavel’s teachings on suffering and how that theology translated into practical application for suffering believers. Serious consideration is given to issues related to the origin and nature of suffering, how it relates to divine sovereignty, God’s purpose for it, how people were encouraged to respond to it, and the benefits of comfort and consolation such understandings produce in believers. Cosby ably gathers these elements together so as to present a Puritan theology of suffering drawn from Flavel’s writings. Table of Contents: 1. Toward a Puritan Theology of Suffering 2. Origin and Nature of Suffering 3. Divine Sovereignty and Human Suffering 4. God’s Purposes in Ordaining Suffering 5. The Right Response to Suffering 6. Assurance of Salvation 7. The Cessation of Suffering

Jesus uses your weaknesses of sin and of circumstance to gloriously display the truth that his grace is sufficient for you and that his power is made perfect in weakness. When You Are Weak guides the reader to explore the practical theology of 2 Corinthians 12 and to usher you unto the green pastures of God's transformative grace. God uses the "thorns of the flesh" experienced in this life to bring you by his sovereign, never-letting-go love into greater communion and fellowship with him so that he might become your greatest joy and treasure. When you are weak, boasting in Jesus makes you strong!
