Book Preparation of Superionic Conductors by Solid State Reactions

Download or read book Preparation of Superionic Conductors by Solid State Reactions written by Saima Sultana and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superionic conductors are solid compounds in which electric current is carried by charged atoms, i.e. by ions. The passage of current is thus associated with mass transfer. Such ionic conductors are called superionic conductors and sometimes composites solid electrolytes, by analogy to liquid electrolyte solutions, and have permitted development of a new scientific discipline called solid state electrochemistry. Composite materials are heterogeneous materials of solid phases. The effect of heterogeneous doping strongly depends on the chemical nature of components and the morphology of the system. This new class of solid electrolytes interfaces called ion conducting electrolytes made up of ionic salt and insulating chemically inert component, affects the properties of composite materials at low, moderate as well as high temperatures.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of New Solid state Li superionic Conductors

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of New Solid state Li superionic Conductors written by Laidong Zhou and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared with lithium ion batteries which use liquid electrolyte, all solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) show great potential in improving the safety and achieving both high power and energy densities. This has driven researchers to make a lot of efforts to develop the ASSLB technologies. However, much work still has to be done on the selection and modification of solid electrolyte candidates. In addition, traditional solid-state reactions that are widely used to synthesize solid electrolytes generally cost high and are hard to scale-up. Thus, the development of cost-effective and simple synthesis method, in addition to the discovery of new solid electrolytes, is important to move this field forward. Solid state electrolytes are the essential component for high energy density ASSLBs. Argyrodite materials Li6PS5X (X=Cl, Br) are one of the best candidates due to their high ionic conductivity and the ability to form a stable interphase with a Li metal anode as well as some lithium transition metal oxide cathode materials. Neverheless, new synthesis methods beyond traditional all solid state approaches are required to reduce the cost and promote scale-up. Herein, I report a direct solution-based synthesis of argyrodites Li6PS5X (X = Cl, Br, I), as discussed in Chapter 3, with 100% degree of crystallinity. The solid electrolytes show high ionic conductivities up to 2x10-3 S/cm for X = Cl, Br and negligible electronic conductivities. This solution synthesis method is not only scalable, but also provides new insight into simple synthesis of other halide-thiophosphate based solid electrolytes. The argyrodite Li6PS5I shows a poorer ionic conductivity but can be increased by antimony-doping. The doping would also improve the stability of the solid electrolytes against air and moisture. Antimony-doping will change the unit cell size and halogen disorder. The effects of unit cell size and halogen disorder are investigated to study the origin of the high ionic conductivity in the argyrodite phases. Chapter 4 discusses the synthesis of Li3Y(PS4)2 and Li6Y3(PS4)5 which can be potentially used as solid electrolytes. Phase pure Li6Y3(PS4)5 was successfully synthesized, however a relatively low conductivity 3.6x10-6 S/cm was obtained. The effect of aliovalent doping, which can introduce Li-ion interstitials and vacancies into the lattice, was investigated with Ca2+ or Zr4+ doping into the Y3+ site. Slightly increased conductivity was obtained for Ca2+ doping, but a decreased conductivity was shown for Zr4+ doping. The low conductivities in all cases is possibly due to the low crystallinity of the products. Further modification of synthesis conditions could further improve the ionic conductivity.

Superionic conductors are highly promising functional materials. As a stepping stone in the development of new superionic conductors that can be utilized as functinal materials efforts to reevaluate solid-interior diffusion and conduction phenomena of ions and molecules in a superionic conductor on the basis of basic physical properties, and to clarify mechanism governing these phenomena from a microscopic standpoint are important. How are diffusing ions associated with material structures within a superionic conductor? What types of interaction are diffusing ions undergoing with the host ions surrounding them? How important is the correlation among diffusing ions in their motion? The carefully presented detail of this book will be of value to research devoted to the understanding and control of functional materials such as superionic conductors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hundred and eighty five chemists, physicists, and engineers met in Schenectady, New York, for the three days May 10-12, 1976, to discuss the subject of Superionic Conductors. This International Conference was held at the Research and Development Center of the General Electric Company. The subject of the Conference was fast ion transport in solids. These materials have potential application in new types of batteries, fuel cells, and sensors. Some like beta alumina are under active development in nov'el new systems. Their study has also become a popular area of scientific investigation. One objective of the Conference was to provide a forum for interdisciplinary communication between chemists, physicists, and engineers. The Conference was an attempt to bring these groups together, in order to listen to each others problems and progress. We began organizing the Conference in the spring of 1975. It was suggested to General Electric managers Drs. Craig S. Tedmon, Jr. and Roland W. Schmitt. They provided immediate and enthusiastic support. They also provided the advice, staff, and backup which were necessary at all points in the planning and duration of the Conference. We were also pleased that they could participate in the Conference: Dr. Tedmon welcomed the participants and officially opened the Conference, and Dr. Schmitt gave the after banquet address. We thank them. Additional and invaluable help, and advice, were also provided by Drs. D. Chatterji, J. B. Bush, G. W. Ludwig, and J. B. Comly. We were joined on the program committee by Drs.

Download or read book New Silver Iodide Based Superionic Conductors written by Mohammed Hassan Ali Saleh and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports the work done in preparation of some silver iodide based superionic conductors. It has been divided into five chapters, the first chapter contains general introduction to the work. The second, third, forth and fifth chapters report preparation and ionic conductivity measurements of these materials. The materials studied were prepared by solid state reaction method. X- Ray diffraction analysis was performed for most of the samples to clarify the main structure of the pure compounds and the structural effects of the substitution of one of the ionic component of the system. Ionic conductivity in the temperature range RT-473 K has been measured for all the samples and the effect was discussed. Phase transition temperature variations of these solids were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).The measured ionic conductivity comprises contributions from bulk, grain boundary conductivities and electrode polarization effects. To explore extensively these contributions, impedance spectroscopy was done for selected samples at room temperature in the frequency range of 40 Hz-5 MHz.

Book Physics of Superionic Conductors

Download or read book Physics of Superionic Conductors written by M.B. Salamon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superionic conductors are solids whose ionic conductivities approach, and in some cases exceed, those of molten salts and electrolyte solutions. This implies an un usual state of matter in which some atoms have nearly liquidlike mobility while others retain their regular crystalline arrangement. This liquid-solid duality has much appeal to condensed matter physicists, and the coincident development of powerful new methods for studying disordered solids and interest in superionic conductors for technical applications has resulted in a new surge of activity in this venerable field. It is the purpose of this book to summarize the current re search in the physics of superionic conduction. with special emphasis on those aspects which set these materials apart from other solids. The volume is aimed to wards the materials community and will, we expect, stimulate further research on these potentially useful substances. The usual characterization of the superionic phase lists high ionic conductivity; low activation energy; and the open structure of the crystal, with its interconne ted network of vacant sites available to one ionic species. To these, as we demon strate in this volume, should be added important dynami~ and collective effect~: the absence of well-defined optical lattice modes, the presence of a pervasive, low-energy excitation, an infrared peak in the frequency-dependent conductivity, unusual NMR prefactors, phase transitions, and a strong tendency for the mobile ion to be found between allowed sites.

Book Next Generation Batteries

Download or read book Next Generation Batteries written by Kiyoshi Kanamura and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the development of next-generation batteries is introduced. Included are reports of investigations to realize high energy density batteries: Li-air, Li-sulfur, and all solid-state and metal anode (Mg, Al, Zn) batteries. Sulfide and oxide solid electrolytes are also reviewed.A number of relevant aspects of all solid-state batteries with a carbon anode or Li-metal anode are discussed and described: The formation of the cathode; the interface between the cathode (anode) and electrolyte; the discharge and charge mechanisms of the Li-air battery; the electrolyte system for the Li-air battery; and cell construction. The Li-sulfur battery involves a critical problem, namely, the dissolution of intermediates of sulfur during the discharge process. Here, new electrolyte systems for the suppression of intermediate dissolution are discussed. Li-metal batteries with liquid electrolytes also present a significant problem: the dendrite formation of lithium. New separators and electrolytes are introduced to improve the safety and rechargeability of the Li-metal anode. Mg, Al, and Zn metal anodes have been also applied to rechargeable batteries, and in this book, new metal anode batteries are introduced as the generation-after-next batteries. This volume is a summary of ALCA-SPRING projects, which constitute the most extensive research for next-generation batteries in Japan. The work presented in this book is highly informative and useful not only for battery researchers but also for researchers in the fields of electric vehicles and energy storage.
