Book Acidification Research Evaluation and Policy Applications

Download or read book Acidification Research Evaluation and Policy Applications written by T. Schneider and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-04-24 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large number of nationwide research programmes in the field of acidification have been carried out in the last decade. Especially in Western Europe, extensive programmes have resulted in a good overview of all the effects - mostly negative - caused by acidifying substances. There is now consensus that types of acidification damage relate to the unique geography of an area: air pollution affects vegetation; acid aerosol the ozone layer. New in this volume, is the relation between scientific results of integrated research programmes and policy actions to prevent, reduce and limit the widespread damage caused by acidification. The results of many different national research programmes are evaluated and compared to present a unique compilation for the research scientist and policy maker. In this volume thematic reviews on specific topics of acidification research are presented, followed by overviews of acidification policy plans and actual abatement plans. The result is the best review of acidification research carried out worldwide during the last decade and presentation of the critical relation between research results and policy actions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of thirty-four case studies in an EU-sponsored project on heavily modified water bodies. The account emphasizes the methods used in the process of identification and designation, and identifies further research needs. The contents are the basis for the agreed European Guidance on artificial and heavily modified water bodies to be used by practitioners in the implementation of the Water Framework Directive.

Book Developing Principles and Models for Sustainable Forestry in Sweden

Download or read book Developing Principles and Models for Sustainable Forestry in Sweden written by H. Sverdrup and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book is summarized those management principles that should be valid in areas where forests continuously are used for production, where biodiversity aspects are important as well as economy and productivity, and where demands on soil status and water quality are set. Especially the very long-term aspects are emphasized, and it is shown how system model thinking is used to reach the goals. Biogeochemical aspects are put forward as they are very important in areas on poor bedrock with acid soils. Forest vitality and stress on trees are treated, as well as the importance of wildlife and their effects of browsing. The balance between social and recreational demands from the society and the economical needs of the landowner is of great concern. Experiences from a special area in South Sweden are presented.

Book Critical Loads and Dynamic Risk Assessments

Download or read book Critical Loads and Dynamic Risk Assessments written by Wim de Vries and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unique overview of research methods over the past 25 years assessing critical loads and temporal effects of the deposition of air pollutants. It includes critical load methods and applications addressing acidification, eutrophication and heavy metal pollution of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Applications include examples for each air pollution threat, both at local and regional scale, including Europe, Asia, Canada and the US. The book starts with background information on the effects of the deposition of sulphur, nitrogen and heavy metals and geochemical and biological indicators for risk assessments. The use of those indicators is then illustrated in the assessment of critical loads and their exceedances and in the temporal assessment of air pollution risks. It also includes the most recent developments of assessing critical loads and current and future risks of soil and water chemistry and biodiversity under climate change, with a special focus on nitrogen. The book thus provides a complete overview of the knowledge that is currently used for the scientific support of policies in the field of air pollution control to protect ecosystem services.

Book Institutions for the Earth

Download or read book Institutions for the Earth written by Peter M. Haas and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can environmental institutions be effective at bringing about a healthier environment? How? Institutions for the Earth takes a close look at the factors influencing organized responses to seven international environmental problems - oil pollution from tankers, acid rain in Europe, stratospheric ozone depletion, pollution of the North Sea and Baltic, mismanagement of fisheries, overpopulation, and misuses of farm chemicals to determine the roles that environmental institutions have played in attempting to solve them. Through rigorous, systematic comparison, it reveals common patterns that can lead to improvements in the collective management of these problems and suggests ways in which international institutions can further the case of environmental protection. The contributors identify three major functions performed by effective international environmental institutions: building national capacity, improving the contractual environment, and elevating governmental concern. The international organizations analyzed within this framework include the United Nations Environment Program, the Intergovernmental Maritime Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization, numerous fisheries commissions, the Commission for Europe, the Oslo and Paris Commissions, the Helsinki Commission, and the United Nations Fund for Population Assistance.

Book Critical Loads

    Book Details:
  • Author : M. Hornung
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Critical Loads written by M. Hornung and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of critical loads is of great ecological, economic and political importance. Although a simple concept - the threshold at which a pollutant load causes harm to the environment - turning this basic idea into scientifically-acceptable criteria is an ambitious undertaking. Nevertheless, governments are pressing ahead with European legislation on air pollution based on acceptable critical loads. However, there has been little opportunity for the ecological community as a whole to participate in these vital discussions on European policy, or for those who have been involved to present the results of their deliberations to their scientific peers.
