Book Industrializing Malaysia

Download or read book Industrializing Malaysia written by K. S. Jomo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite growing concern over environmental issues and the sustainability of economic growth, industrialization is still generally associated with progress and development. This is particularly true of developing countries where industrialization is often the nation's top priority. Industrializing Malaysia presents a critical analysis of the experience of industrialization in Malaysia, examining the role, impact and efficacy of post-independence industrialization policies. The author refocuses attention on some major intended as well as unintended implications and consequences of policies and performance. A wide range of issues is covered: in addition to general historical commentaries and sectoral studies, there are analyses of direct foreign investment, technology, linkages, free trade zones, industrial estates, and rural development.

Book From British to Bumiputera Rule

Download or read book From British to Bumiputera Rule written by Shamsul A B and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1986 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on two years of intensive fieldwork, this detailed community study breaks new ground. Combining anthropological and historical disciplines, it deals with village politics amongst rural Malays growing oil-palm and rubber. This study traces the continuing influence of the colonial and post-colonial state policies on contemporary rural development. It shows that village political cleavages are not just the result of modern electoral practices introduced after World War II but are responses to politico-economic events at the national and even international levels. It examines not only inter-party rivalry between the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) and Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) but also the intra-party politics of both organizations at the local level.

Book The Political Economy of Trade Reform in Emerging Markets

Download or read book The Political Economy of Trade Reform in Emerging Markets written by Peter Draper and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . . . few if any other recent volumes offer a historical perspective on evolving trade policy in several countries, this well-written, well-edited volume. . . is suitable for graduate and research libraries. M. Larudee, Choice This book is a refreshing reminder of the benefits of unilateral trade liberalisation in countries whose leaders dare. An important story told with clarity and authority. Ross Garnaut, The Australian National University, Australia That trade liberalization is good for emerging market economies, and not just for the rich ones, is now widely accepted by both economists and policy-makers. But the question remains: how can these reforms be implemented in practice? The answer to that important question lies in understanding the political economy of each reforming country. This book makes a splendid contribution to our understanding of this issue by examining the experience of several countries. It is therefore an important book to be read by, not just students and researchers, but also policy-makers worldwide. Jagdish Bhagwati, Columbia University, US This timely book brings fresh analysis to the important issue of trade policy reform in emerging markets. The subject matter and its significance are comprehensively introduced with a review of developing country liberalization since the 1980s providing an analytical framework for the seven country case studies that follow. The case studies (Australia, Brazil, Chile, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, and South Africa) cover a wide variety of political, historical and economic issues, but all make clear the important role that crisis, or the threat of it, plays in meaningful trade policy reform. This is of particular relevance in the current global financial crisis. These studies, together with the conclusions which are drawn from them, show how important the trade liberalization agenda remains in the 21st century. Written by a combination of both experts and practitioners, this highly topical book will make productive reading for policy makers concerned with trade policy in developed and developing countries, as well as scholars working in trade policy. Postgraduate students studying international business, international relations, economics, politics, and international law should not be without this book.

Book Sharecropping and Sharecroppers

Download or read book Sharecropping and Sharecroppers written by T. J. Byres and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1983. Of all the social relationships that exist in the countryside in contemporary poor countries, and which have existed in the past in ‘developed’ countries, that of share tenancy is among the most significant and the most fascinating. It is, and has been, geographically widespread, varied in its manifestations, and historically tenacious. Sharecropping has been singled out frequently in land reform programmes as a candidate for elimination. Yet it persists, often in disguised form. It raises difficult theoretical issues, which have attracted the attention of some of the outstanding economists—from Adam Smith, through John Stuart Mill, Karl Marx, and Alfred Marshall—and which remain contentious. Sharecroppers, moreover, have sometimes been involved in important political movements in the countryside. This, too, has given rise to considerable debate. In this double special number of the Journal of Peasant Studies, these varied issues are given extensive and rigorous treatment within a predominantly political economy framework. Sharecropping and sharecroppers are examined both in general terms, in a number of theoretical contributions, and in a rich variety of regional contexts, in which their specific manifestations emerge.

Book Technology For Rural Development Proceedings Of The Second Asian Conference On Technology For Rural Development

Download or read book Technology For Rural Development Proceedings Of The Second Asian Conference On Technology For Rural Development written by S Radhakrishna and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1988-02-01 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years there has been a revival of interest in the old idea that spacetime may have more than four dimensions, all but four having been curled up into a small circumference. In this view the various particles and interactions we see at ordinary energies arise from a simple, perhaps purely geometrical, theory in higher dimensions. This idea has profound implications for elementary particle physics and cosmology, and raises challenging problems of mathematics. These matters were the topic of the Second Jerusalem Winter School of Theoretical Physics.

Book Minorities Rights and the Law in Malaysia

Download or read book Minorities Rights and the Law in Malaysia written by Thaatchaayini Kananatu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the mobilisation of race, rights and the law in Malaysia. It examines the Indian community in Malaysia, a quiet minority which consists of the former Indian Tamil plantation labour community and the urban Indian middle-class. The first part of the book explores the role played by British colonial laws and policies during the British colonial period in Malaya, from the 1890s to 1956, in the construction of an Indian "race" in Malaya, the racialization of labour laws and policies and labour-based mobilisation culminated in the 1940s. The second part investigates the mobilisation trends of the Indian community from 1957 (at the onset of Independent Malaya) to 2018. It shows a gradual shift in the Indian community from a "quiet minority" into a mass mobilising collective or social movement, known as the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF), in 2007. The author shows that activist lawyers and Indian mobilisers played a crucial part in organizing a civil disobedience strategy of framing grievances as political rights and using the law as a site of contention in order to claim legal rights through strategic litigation. Highly interdisciplinary in nature, this book will be of interest to scholars and researchers examining the role of the law and rights in areas such as sociolegal studies, law and society scholarship, law and the postcolonial, social movement studies, migration and labour studies, Asian law and Southeast Asian Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Technical Paper 225. Inefficient civil service administrations are jeopardizing future development in many African countries. The reforms suggested in this paper would make these administrations more accountable, enforce the rule of law, and reward bureaucrats solely on their performance. This approach could help relieve the private sector of disabling regulations, improve services and tax collection, and shift funding away from special interests and toward essential economic programs. Three flexible reform packages are provided. They feature strategies that address varying degrees of inefficiency within a given administration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agenda for Sustaining Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises is the tenth volume of articles compiled into a book. The book represents another attempt made to address issues of importance to the management and development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). More specifically, this particular volume focuses on the sustainability of SMEs. Just as in the earlier ninth volumes, the eight articles introduced in this tenth volume are earlier papers presented at several international conferences which were held locally and abroad. Interestingly, each of the eight articles in the book attempts to deal with a specific issue that is relevant and related to the sustainability of SMEs. Taken together, the book not only helps readers to better understand SMEs but also explains the different issues involved in sustaining a small business. More meaningfully, the articles in the book seek to provide students, owners and managers of SMEs and policy makers useful insights into the scope and complexity of sustaining the business activities of SMEs
