Book Protein Sequence Determination

Download or read book Protein Sequence Determination written by Saul B. Needleman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the few years since the first edition of this book made its appearance, under takings in the area of protein sequence determination have increased at an almost logarithmic pace. The logic governing such efforts has, predictably, retreated from a simple sense of curiosity in achieving something that had not previously been done, to be replaced by an absolute requirement for sequence information as the best means for understanding heretofore unattainable aspects of chemical, and structural and functional mechanistic phenomena. Witness, for example, recent volumes of the Annual Review of Biochemistry and other review journals, which treat the genetic control of mitochondrial proteins, mechanisms of enzyme action, the immunochemistry of collagen, and the role of lysosomal enzymes in the lipid storage diseases - all on the basis of known protein sequence information. One must note, too, the appearance of related works in the area of nucleic acid sequencing. The technologic advances in chemical sequencing procedures have proliferated at a remarkable rate. It is in the area of instrumentation, however, that the greatest advances have taken place. As a consequence of this, each chapter (with one single exception) in this book has been extensively revised and updated. Entire chapters have been replaced in several cases, without minimizing the value of their original content. In addition, a second volume will appear soon, dealing with subjects not covered in the present book.

Book Metabolic Reactions in the Nervous System

Download or read book Metabolic Reactions in the Nervous System written by Abel Lajtha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the projected volumes of the Handbook are completed, most of our current knowledge of the biochemistry of nervous systems will have been touched upon. A number of the chapters will have dealt with the correlations of the biochemical findings with morphological and physio logical parameters as well. Considering the abysmal lack of such attempts, even in the recent past, this is a sign of great progress. If the reader's eventual goal is to derive the "laws" that relate various aspects of animal and human behavior to underlying physiological and biochemical function, these admirable volumes will help him to establish a firm biochemical base from which to operate. It is certain that the future approaches to the various problems of the information-processing functions of the nervous system will require an integrated understanding of the essence of all of the scientific disciplines which are grouped under the general name of neuro biology. The rich feast of information offered up in this Handbook will enable those in the non-chemical disciplines to pick and choose those areas of chemical information pertinent to their immediate interests. Similar types of compendia by physiologists, anatomists, cyberneticists, and psychologists have been helpful to chemists and continue to be so.

Chapter 1 reviews the chemical modification of proteins by group- and site-specific reagents. This chapter also discusses the methods for the chemical modification of proteins and their application to the study of the structure, conformation, and biologic activity of certain proteins. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis of peptides by solution methods and the procedures employed for the synthesis of biologically active peptide hormones. This chapter also deals with the many difficulties inherent in the application of the existing synthetic methods and emphasizes the stringent standards that must be maintained for the successful chemical synthesis of naturally occurring polypeptides. Chapter 3 presents the solid-phase methods for the synthesis of peptides on solid supports. Organic chemists and researchers, teachers and undergraduate students will find this book invaluable.

Book Handbook of Proteolytic Enzymes Volume 1

Download or read book Handbook of Proteolytic Enzymes Volume 1 written by Alan J. Barrett and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Proteolytic Enzymes, Second Edition, Volume 1: Aspartic and Metallo Peptidases is a compilation of numerous progressive research studies on proteolytic enzymes. This edition is organized into two main sections encompassing 328 chapters. This handbook is organized around a system for the classification of peptidases, which is a hierarchical one built on the concepts of catalytic type, clan, family and peptidase. The concept of catalytic type of a peptidase depends upon the chemical nature of the groups responsible for catalysis. The recognized catalytic types are aspartic, cysteine, metallo, serine, threonine, and the unclassified enzymes, while clans and families are groups of homologous peptidases. Homology at the level of a family of peptidases is shown by statistically significant relationship in amino acid sequence to a representative member called the type example, or to another member of the family that has already been shown to be related to the type example. Each chapter discusses the history, activity, specificity, structural chemistry, preparation, and biological aspects of the enzyme. This book will prove useful to enzyme chemists and researchers.
