Book Preparation and Uses of Amorphous Boron Carbide Coated Substrates

Download or read book Preparation and Uses of Amorphous Boron Carbide Coated Substrates written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cloth is coated at a temperature below about 1000.degree. C. with amorphous boron-carbon deposits in a process which provides a substantially uniform coating on all the filaments making up each yarn fiber bundle of the cloth. The coated cloths can be used in the as-deposited condition for example as wear surfaces where high hardness values are needed; or multiple layers of coated cloths can be hot-pressed to form billets useful for example in fusion reactor wall armor. Also provided is a method of controlling the atom ratio of B:C of boron-carbon deposits onto any of a variety of substrates, including cloths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: V. I. MATKOVICH During the meeting of the International Symposium on Boron held in October, 1972 in Tbilisi, U.S.S.R., the idea was proposed to assemble a review of boron and refractory borides by the specialists present. The advantages of such a work were immediately apparent. Such diverse applications of borides as in protective armor, nuclear reactors, coat ings, reinforcement, etc. can hardly all be presented in sufficient detail by a single author. On the other hand it was also recognized that with so much specialization, some areas of interest may not be covered. Within the last decade or two a number of areas have been developed in which the use of refractory borides is growing and improvements are being actively explored. Thus, a number of borides have considerable potential as reinforcing material for plastics or light metals, though only boron fibers have been firmly established up to the present. Ap plication of flakes and films for two-dimensional reinforcement appears attractive, although the high cost of materials and development repre sents a considerable barrier. A number of borides have been used to manufacture lightweight protec tive armor. In this area relatively fast changes seem to be taking place as improvements in performance and weight are made. Boron carbide has found considerable use in this application and new developments exploit the light weight of beryllium borides.

Book The Preparation of High purity Boron Via the Iodide

Download or read book The Preparation of High purity Boron Via the Iodide written by A. F. Armington and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper the present methods of boron preparation are discussed with emphasis on the iodide intermediate. Several methods of boron triiodide preparation were investigated, the most satisfactory method being the preparation from the elements. A yield of 60 pct based on iodine is found for this method. Zone-refining, sublimation, distillation, and fractionalrecrystallization results are given for the boron triiodide, with distillation producing the best results. Several methods of decomposition are also discussed. The purity of the resulting iodide boron approximates the purity of the best available bromide boron. (Author).

Book Alternative Catalytic Materials

Download or read book Alternative Catalytic Materials written by Justin S J Hargreaves and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many important industrial chemical processes rely heavily on catalysis and so researchers are always on the lookout for alternative catalytic materials that may improve existing processes or lead to new ones. Families of alternative catalytic materials currently being investigated include the carbides, nitrides and phosphides as well as amorphous boron catalysts. The addition of carbon, nitrogen or phosphorous to transition metals and the creation of boron-transition metal alloys leads to catalytic materials that have interesting properties, with applications in a range of different reactions, including electrocatalysis. This book provides a comprehensive account of the preparation, characterisation and application of these catalytic materials. It is an important reference for researchers and industrialists working in heterogeneous catalysis and materials chemistry.

Book Preparation and Characterization of Hydrogenated Amorphous Boron Thin Films and Thin Film Solar Cells Produced by Glow Discharge Decomposition Methods First Quarterly Report January 1 1979 March 31 1979

Download or read book Preparation and Characterization of Hydrogenated Amorphous Boron Thin Films and Thin Film Solar Cells Produced by Glow Discharge Decomposition Methods First Quarterly Report January 1 1979 March 31 1979 written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The energy gap of unhydrogenated amorphous boron is approximately 1.35 eV and therefore the theoretical maximum efficiency for amorphous boron solar cells is approximately 25%. However, in exact analogy with the situation previously existing for amorphous silicon, amorphous boron, without hydrogenation, has poor semiconducting properties due to defect states in the band gap. Large area amorphous boron films can be readily produced by either chemical vapor deposition or pyrolysis of diborane or boron tribromide. Such films do not contain more than minute quantities of hydrogen, however, due to the high (1000°C) pyrolysis temperatures required. The substrate temperature during glow discharge decomposition methods, however, can be independently controlled. The decomposition of diborane in a glow discharge has been used to dope amorphous silicon with boron. The decomposition of diborane and of boron tribromide in hydrogen to produce thin films can reasonably be expected to result in amorphous boron thin films containing substantial quantities of hydrogen. If the effect of hydrogen in amorphous boron is similar to that of hydrogen in silicon, then hydrogenated amorphous boron thin films resulting from glow discharge decomposition of gaseous boron compounds could have very great potential as a solar cell material. Initial work and research plans are outlined.
