Book Eternity in British Romantic Poetry

Download or read book Eternity in British Romantic Poetry written by Madeleine Callaghan and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eternity in British Romantic Poetry explores the representation of the relationship between eternity and the mortal world in the poetry of the period. It offers an original approach to Romanticism that demonstrates, against the grain, the dominant intellectual preoccupation of the era: the relationship between the mortal and the eternal. The project's scope is two-fold: firstly, it analyses the prevalence and range of images of eternity (from apocalypse and afterlife to transcendence) in Romantic poetry; secondly, it opens up a new and more nuanced focus on how Romantic poets imagined and interacted with the idea of eternity. Every poet featured in the book seeks and finds their uniqueness in their apprehension of eternity. From Blake’s assertion of the Eternal Now to Keats’s defiance of eternity, Wordsworth’s ‘two consciousnesses’ versus Coleridge’s capacious poetry, Byron’s swithering between versions of eternity compared to Shelleyan yearning, and Hemans’s superlative account of everlasting female suffering, each poet finds new versions of eternity to explore or reject. This monograph sets out a paradigm-shifting approach to the aesthetic and philosophical power of eternity in Romantic poetry.

Book excerpt: Pastor Boyd smiled and smoothed the pages of his Bible as he waited for the members of the study group to take their seats. 'Over the last few months, we've talked a lot about what the Bible says will happen as the time draws closer for the rapture of the church. But several of you are asking for us to take a look at what the scriptures tell us will happen to those left behind after we're gone.' His lips pressed together. 'It won't be pretty. The wars, natural disasters, famines, immorality, and corruption prevalent today will be nothing compared to the seven year period subsequent to our departure.'The future looks bleak for the coastal city of Pensacola, Florida, plagued with natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and moral corruption. Pastor Boyd Palmer has his hands full trying to encourage his small band of believers—including Jack Fleming's anger over his wife's untimely death, the stalking of Angela Sims by her former husband, Clyde, and the increasing citywide deaths caused by constant terrorist attacks. Pastor Boyd's group sees the moral decline of society and nature coming to fruition, just as Christ predicted two thousand years earlier. Join this group of friends and foes as they wade through the tumultuous waters that dangerously flirt with the shore of the rapture. Learn what this small group knows that the unbelieving world doesn't: what they all are experiencing in the present is only thePreludeof what awaits the unbelievers in the future.

Book Imaginings of Time in Lydgate and Hoccleve s Verse

Download or read book Imaginings of Time in Lydgate and Hoccleve s Verse written by Karen Elaine Smyth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using empirical research to explore medieval writers' imaginings of time, this study presents a new morphology by which to study narratives of time in fifteenth-century literary culture, focusing on poems of John Lydgate and Thomas Hoccleve. Karen Smyth begins with an overview of medieval time-keeping devices and considers collective and individual attitudes and perceptions of time. She then examines a range of Middle English authors' appropriations and innovations in relation to such perceptions, identifying competitions of tradition and innovation, allowing for an interrogation of commonly accepted medieval theories of time. An empirically based morphology emerges and is used to examine narratives of time in Lydgate and Hoccleve's work. Through a series of close readings of selected short poems and Lydgate's Troy Book, Fall of Princes, and Siege of Thebes and of Hoccleve's Regiments of Princes and Series, Karen Smyth looks at expressions of time and examples of the authors' negotiation of time consciousness, illustrating how both poets manipulate a range of cultural narratives of time in order to create multiple and sometimes competing temporalities within a single poem. Smyth simultaneously draws attention to Lydgate's and Hoccleve's underestimated artistic skills and lays out a means to re-evaluate medieval cultural attitudes towards time.

Modernity in Spanish America has been viewed by a 'postmodern' cultural studies as a condition of the first half of the twentieth century whose major political, philosophical and cultural assumptions the region would do well to leave behind. This book explores a corpus of Spanish-American literary texts from that 'modern' period which dramatize the constitutive dynamics of modernity, in particular the legacy of the French Revolution, the logic of nationalism, the founding of the modern city, and the awkward relationship to both Western and indigenous traditions. Its argument is that one cannot so easily take leave of modernity.

Book Polycultural Synthesis in the Music of Chou Wen chung

Download or read book Polycultural Synthesis in the Music of Chou Wen chung written by Mary I. Arlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The displacement of Chou Wen-chung from his native China in 1948 forced him into Western-European culture. Ultimately finding his vocation as a composer, he familiarized himself with classical and contemporary techniques but interpreted these through his traditionally oriented Chinese cultural perspective. The result has been the composition of a unique body of repertoire that synthesizes the most progressive Western compositional idioms with an astonishingly traditional heritage of Asian approaches, not only from music, but also from calligraphy, landscape painting, poetry, and more. Chou’s importance rests not only in his compositions, but also in his widespread influence through his extensive teaching career at Columbia University, where his many students included Bright Sheng, Zhou Long, Tan Dun, Chen Yi, Joan Tower, and many more. During his tenure at Columbia, he also founded the U.S.-China Arts Exchange, which continues to this day to be a vital stimulus for multicultural interaction. The volume will include an inventory of the Chou collection in the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel, Switzerland.
