Download or read book Preliminary Investigation at Supersonic Speeds of Triangular and Sweptback Wings written by Macon C. Ellis and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from a supersonic wind-tunnel investigation of a series of thin triangular and sweptback wings are presented. The triangular wing series consisted of eight triangular wings of vertex angles such that a range of leading-edge postions both inside and outside the Mach cone at the test Mach numbers of 1.43 and 1.71 was obtained. The three swept wings had angles of sweep at 45, 55, and 63 degrees and were tested at a Mach number of 1.43.

Book The Calculation of Downwash Behind Supersonic Wings with an Application to Triangular Plan Forms

Download or read book The Calculation of Downwash Behind Supersonic Wings with an Application to Triangular Plan Forms written by Maxwell Alfred Heaslet and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is developed, consistent with the assumptions of small perturbation theory, which provides a means of determining for a known load distribution, the downwash behind a wing in supersonic flow. THe analysis is based upon the use of supersonic doublets which are distributed over the plan form and wake of the wing in a manner determined from the wing loading.

Book Investigation of Bonding Between Metals and Ceramics

Download or read book Investigation of Bonding Between Metals and Ceramics written by H. J. Hamjian and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experiments conducted with boron carbide and each of four metals showed that nickel, cobalt, and iron formed a bonding zone between the metal and the ceramic and that chromium showed satisfactory physical wetting characteristics on the ceramic.

Book Atmospheric Flight in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Atmospheric Flight in the Twentieth Century written by P. Galison and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All technologies differ from one another. They are as varied as humanity's interaction with the physical world. Even people attempting to do the same thing produce multiple technologies. For example, John H. White discovered more than l 1000 patents in the 19th century for locomotive smokestacks. Yet all technologies are processes by which humans seek to control their physical environment and bend nature to their purposes. All technologies are alike. The tension between likeness and difference runs through this collection of papers. All focus on atmospheric flight, a twentieth-century phenomenon. But they approach the topic from different disciplinary perspectives. They ask disparate questions. And they work from distinct agendas. Collectively they help to explain what is different about aviation - how it differs from other technologies and how flight itself has varied from one time and place to another. The importance of this topic is manifest. Flight is one of the defining technologies of the twentieth century. Jay David Bolter argues in Turing's Man that certain technologies in certain ages have had the power not only to transform society but also to shape the way in which people understand their relationship with the physical world. "A defining technology," says Bolter, "resembles a magnifying glass, which collects and focuses seemingly disparate ideas in a culture into one bright, sometimes piercing ray." 2 Flight has done that for the twentieth century.

Book Investigations at Supersonic Speeds of 22 Triangular Wings Representing Two Airfoil Sections for Each of 11 Apex Angles

Download or read book Investigations at Supersonic Speeds of 22 Triangular Wings Representing Two Airfoil Sections for Each of 11 Apex Angles written by Eugene S. Love and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of tests of 11 triangular wings were conducted at Mach numbers 1.62, 1.92, and 2.40 to determine the effect of leading-edge shape and to compare actual test values with the nonviscous linear theory. The two series of wings had identical plan forms, a constant thickness ratio of 8 percent, a constant location of maximum-thickness point of 18 percent, and a range of apex half-angles from 10 to 45 degrees. The first series had an elliptical leading edge and the second series, a wedge leading edge. Measurements were made of lift, drag, pitching moment, and pressure distribution, the latter being confined to three wings at one Mach number.

Book Characteristics of Thin Triangular Wings with Triangular tip Control Surfaces at Supersonic Speeds with Mach Lines Behind the Leading Edge

Download or read book Characteristics of Thin Triangular Wings with Triangular tip Control Surfaces at Supersonic Speeds with Mach Lines Behind the Leading Edge written by Warren A. Tucker and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical analysis, based on the linearized equation for supersonic flow, of characteristics of triangular-tip control surfaces on thin triangular wings. By restriction to case for which Mach lines from wing apex lie behind the leading edge, a simplified treatment was possible; results of previous work on lift of triangular wings could be used to derive expressions for lift effectiveness, pitching moment, rolling-moment effectiveness, hinge moment due to control deflection, and hinge moment due to angle of attack. Comparisons were made with two-dimensional case.
