This book was released on 2014 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A design optimization process is developed to define the wing box structure for High-Altitude Long-Endurance Aircraft (HALE). The goal of this study is to determine the best tradeoff between mass and rigidity of a HALE aircraft wing structure. A preliminary composite laminate structural design procedure is described which uses a NASTRAN-based Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and the Hierachical Evolutionary Engineering Design System (HEEDS) MDO software to define a locus of acceptable, optimized wing box design definitions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topology Optimization in Engineering Structure Design explores the recent advances and applications of topology optimization in engineering structures design, with a particular focus on aircraft and aerospace structural systems. To meet the increasingly complex engineering challenges provided by rapid developments in these industries, structural optimization techniques have developed in conjunction with them over the past two decades. The latest methods and theories to improve mechanical performances and save structural weight under static, dynamic and thermal loads are summarized and explained in detail here, in addition to potential applications of topology optimization techniques such as shape preserving design, smart structure design and additive manufacturing. These new design strategies are illustrated by a host of worked examples, which are inspired by real engineering situations, some of which have been applied to practical structure design with significant effects. Written from a forward-looking applied engineering perspective, the authors not only summarize the latest developments in this field of structure design but also provide both theoretical knowledge and a practical guideline. This book should appeal to graduate students, researchers and engineers, in detailing how to use topology optimization methods to improve product design. - Combines practical applications and topology optimization methodologies - Provides problems inspired by real engineering difficulties - Designed to help researchers in universities acquire more engineering requirements

Book Multidisciplinary Optimization of an Aircraft Wing Tip Store in the Transonic Regime

Download or read book Multidisciplinary Optimization of an Aircraft Wing Tip Store in the Transonic Regime written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research, a multidisciplinary optimization procedure is described to delay the occurrence of store-induced flutter of an aircraft wing/tip store configuration. A preliminary design procedure was developed to enhance the performance characteristics of an aircraft wing model in the transonic Mach number regime. A wing/tip store configuration with the store center of gravity (c.g.) located at the 50% aerodynamic tip chord was chosen for structural optimization. The aircraft wing structural weight was chosen as the objective function with constraints on natural frequency, stress and flutter. Automated Structural Optimization System (ASTROS) and Computational Aeroelasticity Program-Transonic Small- Disturbance (CAP-TSD) were the computational tools employed to perform the structural optimization and subsequent aeroelastic (mutual interaction between the aerodynamics and structural deformation) analysis in the transonic regime. This work showed that an improved store-induced flutter speed was obtained by increasing the separation between the first two natural frequencies of the wing structure. These results were compared with the results of those cases in which the flutter constraints were incorporated, along with the stress and frequency constraints, in the optimization problem. The addition of the flutter constraint resulted in a negligible increase in flutter speed when compared with the flutter speed obtained from optimization with only frequency and stress constraints.

Book excerpt: Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization of Aerospace Composite Materials is a collection of ten SAE technical papers focusing on the design analysis of aerospace composite structures from the perspective of various disciplines. The book concentrates on the following aspects: • Analytical methods for weight design of aircraft structures, including a parametric geometry model capable of generating dedicated models for both aerodynamic and structural solvers. • Methodologies for evaluating the structural performance of carbon/epoxy composite panels. • An aerodynamic design of flexible wings made of composite structures. • Thermal design and analysis of composite enclosures. • Methodologies for analyzing the acoustic performance of composite structures, including the design optimization method to evaluate the acoustic performance in terms of transmission loss (TL) of various composite panels. • The lightening effect on composites, presenting a theoretical method to compute the electrical current propagating through composite structures due to lightning strikes. • The issue of fire resistance as most polymer resins are flammable once the respective ignition temperatures are reached. • A probabilistic-based reliability analysis of the composite structures. The method is demonstrated on a graphite/epoxy composite space habitat subjected to the debris attacks. • A sustainability analysis of aircraft composite materials, including improved durability, less maintenance, and lower energy consumption.

Book AeroStruct Enable and Learn How to Integrate Flexibility in Design

Download or read book AeroStruct Enable and Learn How to Integrate Flexibility in Design written by Ralf Heinrich and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on the German research initiative AeroStruct, a three-year collaborative project between universities and the aircraft industry. It describes the development of an integrated multidisciplinary simulation environment for aircraft analysis and optimization using high-fidelity methods. This system is able to run at a high level of automatism, thus representing a step forward with respect to previous ones. Its special features are: a CAD description that is independent from the disciplines involved, an automated CFD mesh generation and an automated structure model generation including a sizing process. The book also reports on test cases by both industrial partners and DLR demonstrating the advantages of the new environment and its suitability for the industry. These results were also discussed during the AeroStruct closing Symposium, which took place on 13-14 October 2015 at the DLR in Braunschweig, Germany. The book provides expert readers with a timely report on multidisciplinary aircraft design and optimization. Thanks to a good balance between theory and practice, it is expected to address an audience of both academics and professional, and to offer them new ideas for future research and development.

Book Automated Preliminary Design of Simplified Wing Structures to Satisfy Strength and Flutter Requirements

Download or read book Automated Preliminary Design of Simplified Wing Structures to Satisfy Strength and Flutter Requirements written by W. Jefferson Stroud and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple structural model of an aircraft wing is used to show the effects of strength (stress) and flutter requirements on the design of minimum-weight aircraft-wing structures. The wing is idealized as an isotropic sandwich plate with a variable cover thickness distribution and a variable depth between covers. Plate theory is used for the structural analysis, and piston theory is used for the unsteady aerodynamics in the flutter analysis. Mathematical programming techniques are used to find the minimum-weight cover thickness distribution which satisfies flutter, strength, and minimum-gage constraints. The method of solution, some sample results, and the computer program used to obtain these results are presented. The results indicate that the cover thickness distribution obtained when designing for the strength requirement alone may be quite different from the cover thickness distribution obtained when designing for either the flutter requirement alone or for both the strength and flutter requirements concurrently. This conclusion emphasizes the need for designing for both flutter and strength from the outset.
