Book excerpt: This publication shows that the Latin American and Caribbean economy in 2011 was recovering from the global financial crisis. It also recalls that the positive outlook for the region's economy can be exemplified by the fact that household consumption continued to grow. Thanks to rising real wages and strong job creation, the regional unemployment rate went down in 2011. Readily available credit at low interest rates in many countries actually contributed to a fresh rise in gross fixed capital formation, which took the investment ratio to a new record. Finally, the report also shows that driven mainly by high international prices, the inflation rate rose just slightly compared to the previous year, 2010.

The regional economy grew for a fourth consecutive year in 2006 with an estimated GDP growth of 5.3 per cent, with a projected GDP growth rate in 2007 of 4.7 per cent. Per capita GDP is estimated to have risen by about 3.8 per cent. Thus, the region has again performed well in comparison with past periods, but it continues to fall short of other developing regions.

It argues that the currency depreciation seen in several countries in the region could, if sustained, increase incentives for investment in tradeable sectors other than the region's traditional exports (commodities), while redirecting expenditure to ease pressure on the current account. Growth-supporting industrial, trade, environmental, social and labour policies that take into account the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises, could help lessen the region's structural heterogeneity. Growth combined with greater equality would thus gain economic and social sustainability, with greater reliance from investment and exports than before. It is argued that this combination would be aided by social covenants for investment.

The growth observed in 2010 is consolidating the recovery that the majority of the economies in the region began to experience in 2009. This growth had positive effects on employment and private consumption. However, diverse factors came together in 2010 to create a less optimistic situation for the international economy that together with diminished public spending efforts suggest a decreased dynamism in LAC in 2011.
