Book The German Chemical Industry in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book The German Chemical Industry in the Twentieth Century written by John E. Lesch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century, dyes, pharmaceuticals, photographic products, explosives, insecticides, fertilizers, synthetic rubber, fuels, and fibers, plastics, and other products have flowed out of the chemical industry and into the consumer economies, war machines, farms, and medical practices of industrial societies. The German chemical industry has been a major site for the development and application of the science-based technologies that gave rise to these products, and has had an important role as exemplar, stimulus, and competitor in the international chemical industry. This volume explores the German chemical industry's scientific and technological dimension, its international connections, and its development after 1945. The authors relate scientific and technological change in the industry to evolving German political and economic circumstances, including two world wars, the rise and fall of National Socialism, the post-war division of Germany, and the emergence of a global economy. This book will be of interest to historians of modern Germany, to historians of science and technology, and to business and economic historians.

Linde went on to found the Linde Company, one of the biggest German Gas and Engineering companies which became one of the models for science based industries. Today, the Linde Group, headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, is a global technology company dedicated to gas and engineering, material handling and refrigeration. This book examines the history of this company in the context of the history of technology in industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernest Solvay, philanthropist and organizer of the world-famous Solvay conferences on physics, discovered a profitable way of making soda ash in 1861. Together with a handful of associates, he laid the foundations of the Solvay company, which successfully branched out into other chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals. Since its emergence in 1863, Solvay has maintained world leadership in the production of soda ash. This is the first scholarly book on the history of the Solvay company, which was one of the earliest chemical multinationals and today is among the world's twenty largest chemical companies. It is also one of the largest companies in the field to preserve its family character. The authors analyze the company's 150-year history (1863–2013) from economic, political and social perspectives, showing the enormous impact geopolitical events had on the company and the recent consequences of global competition.

Book The Sword of Damocles

Download or read book The Sword of Damocles written by Bo Lindell and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-28 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1945, the fateful atomic bombs were released over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For the first time ever, one nation had used nuclear weapons against another nation, and the world would never again be the same.Nuclear fission was discovered soon before World War II, changing Einstein's thesis that matter can be turned into energy into a most tangible reality. The enormous amounts of energy released by fission enticed scientists and military people into trying to create a doomsday weapon of hitherto untold explosive power. The 1940s were dominated by these efforts -primarily in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the Soviet Union. In this process, scientists played a unique role by directly influencing world events. The enormous resources spent on atomic bomb research would also promote discoveries and improved methods at a rapid pace in many other sciences. Much of the current philosophy in radiological protection was founded already at that time, and many of the topics discussed today were debated then too.The Sword of Damocles, the second part of four in this popular science history, is a direct continuation of Bo Lindell's Pandora's Box, and covers the time from the beginning of World War II until the end of the 1940s. It is aimed at persons with a general interest in radiation and requires no previous knowledge.Professor Bo Lindell (1922-2016) had a degree in engineering physics and a PhD in radiation physics. Having worked closely with the radiation-protection pioneer Rolf Sievert, he took over as Director of the Swedish Radiation Protection Institute in 1965. He retired from that position in 1982 but remained an emeritus adviser until 2008. Lindell was Scientific Secretary and then Chairman of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and the Swedish delegate to, and for a time Chairman of, the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).Lindell wrote this book series, his magnum opus, in Swedish. Aided by generous grants, the Nordic Society for Radiation Protection (NSFS) proudly presents this translation into English.

Book Nitrogen Capture

  • Author : Anthony S. Travis
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2018-05-07
  • ISBN : 9783319689623

Download or read book Nitrogen Capture written by Anthony S. Travis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an account of how the synthetic nitrogen industry became the forerunner of the 20th-century chemical industry in Europe, the United States and Asia. Based on an earlier SpringerBrief by the same author, which focused on the period of World War I, it expands considerably on the international aspects of the development of the synthetic nitrogen industry in the decade and a half following the war, including the new technologies that rivalled the Haber-Bosch ammonia process. Travis describes the tremendous global impact of fixed nitrogen (as calcium cyanamide and ammonia), including the perceived strategic need for nitrogen (mainly for munitions), and, increasingly, its role in increasing crop yields, including in Italy under Mussolini, and in the Soviet Union under Stalin. The author also reviews the situation in Imperial Japan, including the earliest adoption of the Italian Casale ammonia process, from 1923, and the role of fixed nitrogen in the industrialization of colonial Korea from the late 1920s. Chemists, historians of science and technology, and those interested in world fertilizer production and the development of chemical industry during the first four decades of the twentieth century will find this book of considerable value.
