Book Preliminary Evaluation of Solvent extraction and

Download or read book Preliminary Evaluation of Solvent extraction and written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several potential processes are described and evaluated for their suitability in a multitier aqueous-based approach to processing dissolved spent nuclear fuel under the Advanced Accelerator Applications (AAA) program. The evaluation is focused on solvent extraction and ion exchange technologies that have been demonstrated to varying degrees. The goals of the program are to separate uranium (U), technetium (Tc), and the transuranic (TRU) elements from the fission products that are to be vitrified for disposal as high-level waste (HLW). Uranium will be disposed as low-level waste (LLW); Tc and TRU will be transmuted in an accelerator. A number of processes have been examined. The focus was on liquid-liquid solvent extraction processes because of their relatively high state of development and their suitability for high-throughput-rate processing. Ion exchange processes were also examined. PUREX and UREX were evaluated as options for recovery of uranium; UREX is also an option for Tc recovery. Solvent extraction options examined for TRU recovery included TRUEX, DIAMEX, and TRPO, as well as some based on TBP extraction. Processes for trivalent actinide separation from lanthanides were also examined. The PUREX processes have been developed over many years, and have been refined to a significant degree. In the first cycle, U and plutonium (Pu) are co-extracted from dissolved spent fuel solutions by TBP in a diluent, selectively stripped, and purified in additional extraction/strip cycles. Neptunium (Np) can be extracted or driven into the raffinate by adjusting the oxidation state. Trivalent actinides and fission products remain predominantly in the raffinate, although a significant Tc fraction will co-extract with the U and Pu.

Book A Preliminary Evaluation to Determine Whether Supported Liquid Membrane Technology is a Viable Technique to Recover Metals from Acid Mine Drainage

Download or read book A Preliminary Evaluation to Determine Whether Supported Liquid Membrane Technology is a Viable Technique to Recover Metals from Acid Mine Drainage written by R. A. J. May and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many streams from mine sites in N.B. contain significant quantities of heavy metals which might be recovered. At present, the effluent is treated by adding either lime or limestone to the stream and precipitating dissolved heavy metals as hydroxides and sulphate as gypsum. One novel method to recover dissolved metals is solvent extraction using supported liquid membrane technology, a technique which appears to offer economic potential. While it has not been tried in the mining industry, variations of it are used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. This study determined whether supported liquid membrane technology is a viable method for recovering metals, particularly zinc, from acidic drainage streams. Experiments were carried out with a laboratory membrane mediated test unit.

Book Solvent Extraction in Biotechnology

Download or read book Solvent Extraction in Biotechnology written by Karl Schügerl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solvent Extraction in Biotechnology deals with the reco- very and purification of primary and secondary metabolites by solvent extraction. In the first part the reaction engineering principles: definitions, thermodynamic fundamentals, and system models, the kinetics of mass transfer between two phases without and with chemical reaction as well as extraction equipment, which are important for downstream processing in biotechnology, are considered in detail. The special part of the book describes the recovery of low-molecular metabolites: alcohols, acids and antibiotics with organic solvents, carrier-modifier-solvent systems, supercritical gases as well as with liquid membrane techniques. Several practical examples are given for the recovery of different metabolites as well as for the calculation of the extraction processes necessary for equipment design. Besides solvent extraction, novel separation techniques with liquid membrane, microemulsion and reversed micelles are also presented. This book will introduce the biochemical engineer and process engineer to the recovery of products from complex cultivation broths by modern techniques of solvent extraction and help them with process design.

Book Assessment of Solvent Extraction for Treatment of Coal Gasifier Wastewater Progress Report 19 Refs

Download or read book Assessment of Solvent Extraction for Treatment of Coal Gasifier Wastewater Progress Report 19 Refs written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary study has been completed for the assessment of solvent extraction for coal gasifier wastewater treatment. This study shows very favorable economics; wastewater contaminants have a market value of about $45.00 per 1000 gallons of water to be treated while treatment costs are about $1.25 to $2.50 per 1000 gallons. Measurements of distribution coefficients between water and various solvents has been completed for m-dihydroxybenzene (resorcinol) and is in progress for o- and p-dihydroxybenzene, pyridine, o-cresol, and naphthol. A very high distribution coefficient of 40 was found for m-dihydroxybenzene between water and octanone-2 (methyl heptyl ketone).

Download or read book Natural Products Isolation written by Satya D. Sarker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-05 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “natural products” spans an extremely large and diverse range of chemical compounds derived and isolated from biological sources. Our interest in natural products can be traced back thousands of years for their usefulness to humankind, and this continues to the present day. Compounds and extracts derived from the biosphere have found uses in medicine, agriculture, cosmetics, and food in ancient and modern societies around the world. Therefore, the ability to access natural products, understand their usefulness, and derive applications has been a major driving force in the field of natural product research. The first edition of Natural Products Isolation provided readers for the first time with some practical guidance in the process of extraction and isolation of natural products and was the result of Richard Cannell’s unique vision and tireless efforts. Unfortunately, Richard Cannell died in 1999 soon after completing the first edition. We are indebted to him and hope this new edition pays adequate tribute to his excellent work. The first edition laid down the “ground rules” and established the techniques available at the time. Since its publication in 1998, there have been significant developments in some areas in natural product isolation. To capture these developments, publication of a second edition is long overdue, and we believe it brings the work up to date while still covering many basic techniques known to save time and effort, and capable of results equivalent to those from more recent and expensive techniques.
