This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary evaluation of a new reciprocating engine for CAES power plants is presented. One possible engine configuration is a reversible expander/compressor engine. Power generation results from engine operation as an internal combustion expander, while compression is accomplished using the same engine operating as a reciprocating compressor. Another engine configuration is a hybrid engine which uses an internal combustion reciprocating engine as a high-pressure expander and a gas turbine as a low-pressure expander. Compression is accomplished using either separate turbocompressors or operating the high-pressure expander as a reversible reciprocating compressor in series with a low-pressure turbocompressor. The engine lends itself to modular construction and it can be constructed by modifying an available high-production diesel engine, thus taking advantage of reduced costs from mass produced engines and components. The disadvantages of the engine are a slightly higher heat rate, which is due to higher (instantaneous) combustion temperatures, and the need for an engine development program. It is shown that the expected heat rate using the new engine is about 4800 Btu/kWh compared to 4100 to 4500 Btu/kWh using conventional turbines. The difference between these heat rates is rather insignificant compared to heat rates of 11,000 to 15,000 Btu/kWh which are typical of gas turbine peaker units. The design and performance of the engine is similar to that of diesel engines and reciprocating compressors. Book Use of Reciprocating Engines in Compressed Air Energy Storage Power Plants

Download or read book Use of Reciprocating Engines in Compressed Air Energy Storage Power Plants written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of reciprocating engines to compressed air energy is described. The expected advantages compared to conventional turbines and compressors are reduced reservoir size and cost, reduced equipment cost, reduced compression energy, increased overall plant efficiency, and increased energy storage effectiveness. The performance of possible engine and plant configurations are presented. One possible configuration is the use of a reversible expander/compressor engine; another is a hybrid reciprocating engine-turbomachinery concept. Capital and operating costs are also estimated and compared with that of conventional CAES plant designs.

Book Development of a Hybrid Compressor Expander Module for Automotive Fuel Cell Applications

Download or read book Development of a Hybrid Compressor Expander Module for Automotive Fuel Cell Applications written by Paul McTaggart and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this program TIAX LLC conducted the development of an advanced technology compressor/expander for supplying compressed air to Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells in transportation applications. The overall objective of this program was to develop a hybrid compressor/expander module, based on both scroll and high-speed turbomachinery technologies, which will combine the strengths of each technology to create a concept with superior performance at minimal size and cost. The resulting system was expected to have efficiency and pressure delivery capability comparable to that of a scroll-only machine, at significantly reduced system size and weight when compared to scroll-only designs. Based on the results of detailed designs and analyses of the critical system elements, the Hybrid Compressor/Expander Module concept was projected to deliver significant improvements in weight, volume and manufacturing cost relative to previous generation systems.

Book Development of Compressed Air Rotary Wankel Devices for Hybrid Vehicle

Download or read book Development of Compressed Air Rotary Wankel Devices for Hybrid Vehicle written by Ghada Abbas Sadiq and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, an efficient expander and compressor are developed using Wankel engine concept for compressed air-electric hybrid vehicle to reduce the environmental impact of automotive industry. This research presents a new approach that integrates the 1D preliminary design using MATLAB software and three dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling using ANSYS®17·2 for more accurate prediction of the performance and flow dynamics at various crank angles, port configurations and locations to optimise the design of the Wankel expander and compressor. Therefore, investigations of Wankel expanders were carried out at various operating conditions to achieve a power output ranging from 1-25 kW. A novel two-stage Wankel expander was developed to achieve high efficiency and compactness design compared to the single-stage expander using the 3D CFD modelling. The study of Wankel compressor was carried out using two inlet ports and two outlet ports to investigate the performance of compressor with different sizes and ports' locations and size. Compressed air-electric hybrid system was developed to recover braking energy to produce compressed air that will be used to power the vehicle. Finally, a single-stage Wankel expander using two inlet ports and two outlet ports was manufactured, assembled and tested experimentally using compressed air.
