Book excerpt: Bryophytes, a group of plants present in all terrestrial biomes of the Earth, play a significant role in ecosystems and have potential use in many life domains. They can be used in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and healthcare domains and can help to improve air quality, create bio-repellents and bio-pesticides, and help cure both human and animal diseases. This book discusses novel aspects of fundamental and applicative bryophyte biology.
Download or read book Illustrated Moss Flora of Antarctica written by Ryszard Ochyra and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-13 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mosses are a major component of the vegetation in ice-free coastal regions of Antarctica. They play an important role in the colonisation of ice-free terrain, accumulation of organic matter, release of organic exudates, and also provide a food and habitat resource for invertebrates. They serve as model organisms for physiological experiments designed to elucidate problems of plant cold tolerance and survival mechanisms and for monitoring biological responses to climate change. This Flora provides the first comprehensive description, with keys, of all known species and varieties of moss in the Antarctic biome. It has involved microscopic examination of around 10,000 specimens from Antarctica and, for comparison, from other continents. All species are illustrated by detailed line drawings, alongside information about their reproductive status, ecology, and distribution. This is an invaluable resource for bryologists worldwide, as well as to Antarctic botanists and other terrestrial biologists.

Engelsk tekst.

Download or read book Mosses Liverworts and Hornworts written by IUCN/SSC Bryophyte Specialist Group and published by World Conservation Union. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bryophytes are of great importance in their ecosystems and for human well-being. They stabilize soil crust through colonization of bare grounds and rocks; they are essential in nutrient recycling, biomass production, and carbon fixing; they control water through an effective retention mechanism; and they have economic value as peat for fuel, horticulture, oil absorption, and as sources of a wide variety of chemical compounds. Bryophytes have long been used for medicinal purposes and provide a food source for reindeer, geese, ducks, sheep, musk-ox, lemmings, and other rodents. Threats include deforestation, cultivation of forests, reclamation of land, urbanization, roads, dam-building, mining, drainage of wetlands and over-grazing. This plan reviews the situation worldwide and proposes a variety of initiatives. It is aimed at those who work with and care about nature conservation, including governmental and non-governmental organizations as well as politicians and the general interested public.

Download or read book Arable Bryophytes written by Ron Porley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been produced to highlight the conservation importance of the mosses, liverworts, and hornworts that are found on cultivated land. These plants may be tiny and unobtrusive, but close examination reveals their true beauty. The stunning photographs will surely inspire an increased level of interest in this relatively little-known group and enable even the novice bryologist to gain a better insight into the rich diversity of our bryophyte flora. An introduction to the mosses, liverworts, and hornworts associated with cultivated land Information on the 86 bryophytes found in arable fields Illustrated profiles of the 47 bryophytes most closely associated with arable farming, highlighting those included in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan Superb close-up photographs and illustrations showing the key features Distribution maps based on the latest available data An easy-to-use approach to the identification of this challenging group

Download or read book Handbook of Alien Species in Europe written by Delivering Alien Invasive Species and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological invasions by alien (non-native) species are widely recognized as a significant component of human-caused global environmental change and the second most important cause of biodiversity decline. Alien species threaten many European ecosystems and have serious environmental, economic and health impacts. The DAISIE (Delivering Alien Invasive Species Inventories for Europe) project has now brought together all available information on alien species in Europe (terrestrial, aquatic and marine) and from all taxa (fungi, plants, animals). Thus for the first time, an overview and assessment of biological invasions in the Pan-European region is finally possible. The Handbook of Alien Species in Europe summarises the major findings of this groundbreaking research and addresses the invasion trends, pathways, and both economic as well as ecological impact for eight major taxonomic groups. Approximately 11.000 alien species recorded in Europe are listed, and fact sheets for 100 of the most invasive alien species are included, each with a distribution map and colour illustration. The book is complemented by a regularly updated internet database providing free additional information. With its highly interdisciplinary approach, DAISIE and its Handbook will be the basis for future scientific investigations as well as management and control of alien invasive species in Europe.
