Download or read book Preliminary Cultural Resource Survey and Geomorphological Assessment of Selected Areas in Navigation Pool 16 Mississippi River written by Michael L. Barnhardt and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a cultural resource inventory and geomorphological assessment of Navigation Pool 16, situated on the Mississippi River between Muscatine, Iowa, on the south and Rock Island, Illinois, on the north. The research was conducted under contract with the Rock Island District, United States Army Corps of Engineers, to assist in management problems related to maintenance of the nine-foot channel. Initially the survey was designed to sample 20 percent of the Federal Land, but the final sample comprised 25 percent. Map evaluation and gemorphological fieldwork revealed that almost the entire land surfae of the pool had been inundated repeatedly, leaving a mantle of silt that conceals virtually the entire survey area. Eleven previously unrecorded prehistoric sites were found, including one Archaic shell miden with a C-14 date of 5680 + minus 75BP (ISGS-829); two sites also had historic 19th-century components.

Book Preliminary Investigations Archaeology and Sediment Geomorphology Navigation Pool 12 Upper Mississippi River

Download or read book Preliminary Investigations Archaeology and Sediment Geomorphology Navigation Pool 12 Upper Mississippi River written by Robert F. Boszhardt and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March, 1981, Great Lakes Archaeological Research Center, Inc. entered into a contractual agreement with the Rock Island District Corps of Engineers to conduct a cultural resources survey on Corps owned or administered lands within Navigation Pool 12 in the Mississippi River. In its initial form the project identified two primary goals: (1) generate a qualitative predictive model for site locations; and (2) evaluate the effects of erosion from maintenance of the pool on cultural resources within the pool. The second goal of the project, to evaluate the effects of pool maintenance of cultural resources, has been realized. Fifteen of the 24 archaeological sites located through this preliminary survey and evaluation are currently being destroyed by erosional processes at work in the lowland floodplain. Finally, past conceptualizations of the utilization and occupation of the lowland floodplain by prehistoric residents need to be re-examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iowa has more than eighteen thousand archaeological sites, and research in the past few decades has transformed our knowledge of the state's human past. Drawing on the discoveries of many avocational and professional scientists, Lynn Alex describes Iowa's unique archaeological record as well as the challenges faced by today's researchers, armed with innovative techniques for the discovery and recovery of archaeological remains and increasingly refined frameworks for interpretation. The core of this book--which includes many historic photographs and maps as well as numerous new maps and drawings and a generous selection of color photos--explores in detail what archaeologists have learned from studying the state's material remains and their contexts. Examining the projectile points, potsherds, and patterns that make up the archaeological record, Alex describes the nature of the earliest settlements in Iowa, the development of farming cultures, the role of the environment and environmental change, geomorphology and the burial of sites, interaction among native societies, tribal affiliation of early historic groups, and the arrival and impact of Euro-Americans. In a final chapter, she examines the question of stewardship and the protection of Iowa's many archaeological resources.

Book Archaeology Geomorphology and Historic Surveys in Pools 13 14 Upper Mississippi River Volume 1

Download or read book Archaeology Geomorphology and Historic Surveys in Pools 13 14 Upper Mississippi River Volume 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study area lies between Lock and Dam 12 at Bellevue, Iowa and Lock and Dam 14 below LeClaire, Iowa, and is inclusive of the entire valley floor and the bluffline. An assessment of cultural resources and landscapes in Pools 13-14 was undertaken to provide the basic information for managing the cultural heritage of properties under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government. The present volume reviews existing information and describes the results of a sample survey of the valley floor. Recommendations for mitigation measures on specific impacted sites and long-term management of the pools' cultural properties and natural resources are the final products of the project. The basic premise of the project is that the interactions between humans and the natural (i.e. fluvial)system must be understood before the archaeological potential of any area can be assessed. Geomorphic processes are given priority because they function as independent variables affecting the conditions for preservation of archaeological evidence. Illinois.

Book Preliminary Investigations Archaeology and Sediment Geomorphology Navigation Pool 12 Upper Mississippi River Addendum Archaeological Testing and Evaluation of 11Jd126

Download or read book Preliminary Investigations Archaeology and Sediment Geomorphology Navigation Pool 12 Upper Mississippi River Addendum Archaeological Testing and Evaluation of 11Jd126 written by Robert F. Boszhardt and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 19, 1981, the Great Lakes Archaeological Research Center, Inc. was notified by the Rock Island District Corps of Engineers to proceed with evaluatory testing at 11Jd126, a threatened archaeological site in the lowland floodplain of Navigation Pool 12 in the Mississippi River. The evaluation was geared towards determination of the sites eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. The testing began late in November 1981 and efforts were severely hampered by poor field conditions. However, in the short amount of time expended at the site, it became clear that the site likely meets the criteria for eligibility to the National Register. In situ deposits consisting of a sheet midden and pit features were identified as representing Middle and Late Woodland components. The results of the testing have produced the first lowland floodplain adaptive strategy information for these periods within this region.

Book Archaeological Investigations Navigation Pool II Upper Mississippi River Basin Volume 1 Narrative

Download or read book Archaeological Investigations Navigation Pool II Upper Mississippi River Basin Volume 1 Narrative written by GREAT LAKES ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH CENTER INC WAUKESHA WI. and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combined methods of auger and coring investigations, test excavations, cut-bank surveys, archives and literature search, remote sensing, and historic mapping procedures have been applied to the development of a preliminary model of landscape evolution. The model addresses the nature, extent, and distribution of buried habitable surfaces in the Navigation Pool. Emphases are placed on the contexts in which sites are known to occur and where they can be expected to occur. In addition, certain limitations of the study are made explicit and recommendations for the resolution of these limitations are presented. In conclusion, these investigations have yielded the following: (1) survey of 14 recreation areas totaling 253 acres; (2) survey of 20 linear miles of erosional surfaces; (3) identification of 27 archaeological sites; (4) compilation of a base line cultural resources study for Pool 11 including identification of prehistoric and historic research theories; (5) development of preliminary geomorphic and cultural models; and (6) provided guidelines and recommendations for future study to resolve remaining limitations. Taken together, these data provide sufficient information relating to geomorphic and cultural contexts to identify areas where surficial compliance surveys are inappropriate.
