Book Preliminary Boundary Analysis of the Greater Pukaskwa National Park Ecosystem Using the ABC Resource Survey Approach

Download or read book Preliminary Boundary Analysis of the Greater Pukaskwa National Park Ecosystem Using the ABC Resource Survey Approach written by Heritage Resources Centre and published by Parks Canada, National Parks. This book was released on 1995 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural area planners and managers have recognized that to conserve or protect ecological integrity effectively in existing protected areas, external or regional biological linkages, ecological processes, and human-induced stresses need to be identified and planned for in surrounding lands. This report is an initial attempt at identifying a broader vision for one such protected area, Pukaskwa National Park on the eastern shore of Lake Superior. Such a vision would include land areas which are beyond park boundaries and managed by others, in order to plan for ecological integrity. The study methodology used is the ABC (Abiotic, Biotic, and Cultural) Resource Survey Method and a set of guidelines for identifying and setting ecologically based boundaries or areas of interest. The guidelines stress watersheds as being the fundamental units for maintaining abiotic integrity; biological integrity is seen to be aided by maintenance of healthy food webs, a full and natural complement of species, and intact natural ranges. The report presents raw structural and functional ABC data for the park area, discusses the significance of and constraints on ABC features as well as their environmental significance and constraints, and proposes a terrestrial greater ecosystem area and a possible institutional area of co-operation for the park. The appendix includes a selected list of species found in the study area.

Book National Parks and Protected Areas

Download or read book National Parks and Protected Areas written by James Gordon Nelson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National parks and protected areas offer a wealth of ecological and social contributions or services to humans and life on earth. This book describes the strengths of national parks and protected areas in different parts of Europe and North America and the challenges to the full realization of their goals. It shows that they are useful not only in conserving rare species and biodiversity, but also in protecting water supply and other resources necessary to tourism and to economic and social development generally. Ideas and information on useful planning, management and decision-making arrangements are presented, and research needs are identified.

Book Tourism Recreation and Sustainability

Download or read book Tourism Recreation and Sustainability written by Stephen F. McCool and published by CABI. This book was released on 2008 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to illustrate many of the issues and approaches associated with sustainable tourism development, policy and research. Included are case studies of tourism development using both quantitative and qualitative methods, analytical frameworks for managing tourism and chapters addressing critical questions about the relationship between tourism and sustainability goals. As a whole, the book demonstrates the many dimensions and topics associated with attempts to address the complex issues associated with sustainability and tourism. Added in this second edition, are several new chapters that address emerging issues in management of tourism. Part I (Frameworks and Approaches) discusses the need for integration of social and environmental issues in tourism development. Part II (Tourism and Place) explicitly recognizes the importance of understanding the values and attributes of areas that become tourist destinations. Part III (Emerging Issues in Culture and Tourism) illustrates that we live in a dynamic world, that what was once acceptable is no longer, that our mental models of tourism development are in constant change and that researchers and policy makers must be alert to shifting public values and beliefs. This part includes material on local attitudes, poverty alleviation, indigenous people and tourism, and a discussion about culture and tourism. The book has 16 chapters and a subject index.

Book A Proposed Framework to Assess Cumulative Environmental Effects in Canadian National Parks

Download or read book A Proposed Framework to Assess Cumulative Environmental Effects in Canadian National Parks written by Sarah A. Kalff and published by Halifax, N.S. : Parks Canada, Atlantic Regional Office. This book was released on 1995 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report proposes a framework that promotes cumulative impact assessment (CEA) as a decision-making process where information on the ecological integrity of national parks is integrated into park management planning. Research for the development of the framework includes a literature review, interviews with park managers and cumulative effects specialists, and field work in two Atlantic region parks. Two illustrations using a project from each park helped refine the framework and ensure its utility. The framework links three components: sources of cumulative environmental change, assessment of this change, and the options available to manage cumulative effects. The framework establishes a link between local effects induced by specific projects or activities and overall park ecological integrity by highlighting the relationship between project-specific environmental assessment and park planning. CEA is the bridge between these two management activities. The report focuses mainly on the assessment portion of the framework and provides a series of steps to assist in conducting CEAs. The steps are organized into three tiers of analysis that correlate with regional, park, and project site scales. The framework also directs the assessor to examine broad temporal scales.

Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquaculture is developing, expanding and intensifying in almost all regions of the world, except in sub-Saharan Africa. Although the sector appears to be capable of meeting the gap between future demand and supply for aquatic food, there are many constraints and challenges which must be addressed in order to at least maintain the present level of per capita consumption at the global level. Key issues are the need for enhanced enforcement of regulation and better governance of the sector, as well as greater producer participation in the decision-making and regulation process. This publication examines past trends in aquaculture development as well as the current global status, drawing on a number of national and regional reviews.
