Book Problems in the History of Ancient Greece

Download or read book Problems in the History of Ancient Greece written by Donald Kagan and published by Pearson. This book was released on 2010 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of contested problems in the history of Ancient Greece aims to enhance and deepen the experience of any college student. Each chapter within Problems in the History of Ancient Greece is a self-contained unit that presents a key problem of continuing interest among historians. In each case there is a selection of pertinent ancient sources in translation, with a number of modern viewpoints also presented. In this way, students may experience the nature of weighing and evaluating sources; the problem of posing mean-ingful and enlightening questions; the need to change hypotheses in the light of new evidence or new insights; and the necessity, in some cases, of suspending judgment. Note: The problems selected for this collection span the chronological period usually covered in ancient Greek courses. Second, they were selected because they have been the subject of relatively recent study. Finally, they are meant to be sufficiently varied in topic and approach; in order to expose the student to a variety of historical methods and techniques.

Book Problems in Greek History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Problems in Greek History Classic Reprint written by John Pentland Mahaffy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than a simple history book this is instead focussed on the classic historians and their histories. This is an essential read for anyone who would like to have, or considers themself to have, a classical education. Famous Irish classicist and scholar John Pentland Mahaffy tackles the enormous subject of the history of Greece in his workProblems in Greek History. Famous for his wit, Mahaffy is credited as being a teacher and major inspiration for Oscar Wilde. Mahaffy was an experienced and well-published scholar on the topic of Greek history, having published numerous works pertaining to the topic. Mahaffy's book is a survey of Greek history from the period of ancient Greek myths to the period of Roman-controlled Greece. The focus of this book is not Greece itself, but rather the history of Greece as has been documented by historians. The author examines the main points of the great Greek historians, first highlighting the strengths of their histories before illuminating the deficiencies and inconsistencies present. Mahaffy's voice is authoritative. He does not shy away from potentially controversial subjects and seemingly relishes pointing out errors that exist in accepted histories. His trademark wit is present throughout, making this both an informative and entertaining read. The book concludes with an examination of the lessons one can take from Greek life. It is this portion of the book that may be most interesting to some readers, particularly those less interested in historiography. Problems in Greek History is an important work in the subject. This book provides the reader an opportunity to read first hand the work of one of the most important and influential Irish scholars of his day, as well as providing history enthusiasts and classicists with an interesting work detailing Greek history. Book A Brief History of Ancient Greece

Download or read book A Brief History of Ancient Greece written by Sarah B. Pomeroy and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2009 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the ancient Greeks is one of the most improbable success stories in world history. A small group of people inhabiting a country poor in resources and divided into hundreds of quarreling states created one of the most remarkable civilizations ever. Comprehensive and balanced, A Brief History of Ancient Greece: Politics, Society, and Culture, Second Edition is a shorter version of the authors' highly successful Ancient Greece: A Political, Social, and Cultural History, Second Edition (OUP, 2008). Four leading authorities on the classical world offer a lively and up-to-date account of Greek civilization and history in all its complexity and variety, covering the entire period from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic Era, and integrating the most recent research in archaeology, comparative anthropology, and social history. They show how the early Greeks borrowed from their neighbors but eventually developed a distinctive culture all their own, one that was marked by astonishing creativity, versatility, and resilience. Using physical evidence from archaeology, the written testimony of literary texts and inscriptions, and anthropological models based on comparative studies, this compact volume provides an account of the Greek world that is thoughtful and sophisticated yet accessible to students and general readers with little or no knowledge of Greece.

Book Economic and Social History of Ancient Greece

Download or read book Economic and Social History of Ancient Greece written by M. M. Austin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an English version of the book originally published in French under the title of Economies et societes en Grece ancienne. The opportunity has been taken to correct some errors, update bibliographical references, add a few passage to the selection of ancient sources, and improve the material presentation in several respects. But otherwise this remains substantially the same book as the original French version. The book is aimed in the first place at an undergraduate audience, though it is hoped that it will also be of interest to a wiser, non-specialist readership interested in the history and civilization of Ancient Greece. It attempts to meet a need well-known to all those who have to teach Greek history in universities. Students, long dissatisfied with a purely political approach to Greek history, ask for more 'economic and social' history. One then has to answer--tand this book is a very modest attempt at an answer--that neither the 'economic' nor the 'social' category had in the Greek city the same independent status they now enjoy. The book takes its starting-point in this ambiguity; it accepts the challenge, but rejects the formulation of the question. Anyone who has been asked to explain once and for all the role played by slaves in social conflicts in the Greek world will understand what we mean. — Publisher description.

Book Hellas A Short History of Ancient Greece

Download or read book Hellas A Short History of Ancient Greece written by C. E. Robinson and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Greek History, someone has said, little that happened mattered much; it was what the Greeks thought that counted. This, broadly speaking, is the truth; and here I have tried to lay the main emphasis on Greek ideas, setting them against the background of historic events. Obviously the best clue to their understanding is to be found in what the Greeks themselves wrote; and, though no English version can be an adequate substitute, I have given in translation whatever passages appear to me most revealing. With these it has been my object to convey effectively the author’s meaning rather than slavishly to reproduce his phraseology; and I have taken, I confess, some liberty with the task, abbreviating by frequent omissions of words, clauses and even whole sentences, occasionally elaborating to bring out the full sense, and above all recasting the original syntactic construction in approximation to our own modern idiom. In the illustrations, similarly, I have here and there allowed myself the licence of reconstruction when details have suffered through accident or age. I have to record with gratitude my great debt to Mrs. Eric James and Mr. W. H. Plommer and Mr. L. F. R. Audemars for valuable criticisms and suggestions. My thanks are also due to Messrs. Methuen, the publishers of my “History of Greece,” for permission to produce this complementary volume. It may be that the reader will be encouraged to further study of the subject; and on certain points—few among many which limits of space have compelled me to summarize or omit—I have ventured to insert a cross-reference.

The new edition opens with a new chapter that provides an historical overview of the key events, figures and eras, and continues with updated chapters on key topics in Greek history: religion and thought, Athenian democracy, Athenian society, Athenian drama, the Olympic Games and Sparta. Activity boxes and further reading lists throughout each chapter aid students' understanding of the subject. Review questions throughout this book challenge students to read further and reflect on some of the most important social, political and cultural issues of classical Greece. Many topics raise issues of contemporary relevance, such as the rights of citizens in a democracy, forced marriage and approaches to education. The book is supported by a website which, contains comprehensive resources on the social, political and cultural issues of classical Greece.
