Book Pride and Prejudice Second Edition

Download or read book Pride and Prejudice Second Edition written by Jane Austen and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Bennet is Austen’s most liberated and appealing heroine, and Pride and Prejudice has remained over most of the past two centuries Austen’s most popular novel. The story turns on the marriage prospects of the five daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, and especially on Elizabeth’s prejudice against the proud and distant Fitzwilliam Darcy. Pride and Prejudice is a romantic comedy that has been read as conservative and feminist, reactionary and revolutionary, rooted in the time of its composition and deliberately timeless. Robert Irvine’s introduction sets the novel in the context of the literary and intellectual history of the period, dealing with such crucial background issues as class relations in Britain, female exclusion from property and power, and the impact of the French Revolution. The introduction and annotations have been expanded and updated for the new edition, and a new appendix of Austen’s juvenilia has been added.

Book excerpt: Since Nixon's opening to China in 1972, eight successive U.S. Presidents have bet that integrating China into the world economy will change China before China changes the international system. This highly readable collection of essays challenges that assumption from the perspectives of history, demographics and military strategy. U.S.-China cooperation has expanded in recent years and that trend is likely to continue, but the authors in this volume remind us that China's future is not pre-ordained and that the United States must take a more proactive approach to shape the strategic environment in Asia. - Michael J. Green, Former Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and Senior Director for Asia, NSC; Senior Advisor and Japan Chair, CSIS; Associate Professor, Georgetown University ''A masterful survey of the clash of ideas, interests and powers that will define the security order of the next few decades. This book is robust, undiplomatic, and sometimes scary to read. -Mark Leonard, author of What Does China Think? ''Gary Schmitt has assembled a superlative cast of foreign policy experts to examine one of the greatest long-term challenges that the United States faces. It is not, as he writes, the rise of China per se but rather the rise of a ''People's Republic of China'' that causes concern for American policymakers. Those who read this invaluable book will not have their concerns allayed, but they will gain a much better understanding of the issues involved. This is the best single-volume overview of U.S.-China relations that anyone has produced.

Book Coping with Prejudice

Download or read book Coping with Prejudice written by Paul A. Holloway and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2009 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern social psychology has devoted a significant share of its resources to the study of human prejudice. Most research to date has focused on those groups that exhibit prejudice. However, a number of recent studies have begun to investigate prejudice from the perspective of its targets. These studies have shown prejudice to be a powerful stressor that places unique and costly demands on its targets. They have also identified a number of strategies that targets of prejudice use to cope with their predicaments. These findings hold real promise for scholars of early Christianity, for not only were early Christians frequently the targets of religious prejudice - they were to become its perpetrators soon enough! - but much of what they wrote sought either directly or indirectly to address this problem. In this study, Paul A. Holloway applies the findings of social psychology to the early Christian pseudepigraphon known as 1 Peter. He argues that 1 Peter marks one of the earliest attempts by a Christian author to craft a more or less comprehensive response to anti-Christian prejudice and its outcomes. Unlike later Apologists, however, who also wrote in response to anti-Christian prejudice, the author of 1 Peter does not seek to influence directly the thoughts and actions of those hostile to Christianity, but writes instead for his beleaguered coreligionists, consoling them in their suffering and advising them on how to cope with popular prejudice and the persecution it engendered.
