Book excerpt: The archaeological site of Fracción Mujular is composed of several small residential plaza groups and a monumental ballcourt located near the Pacific Coast of Chiapas, Mexico. Long known for the Central Mexican iconography found on its carved stelae (Navarrete 1976, 1986; García-Des Lauriers 2005, 2007, 2016; Taube 2000), the survey and excavations conducted during the course of this dissertation represent the first extensive and systematic investigations of the site. Situated on top of the mountain of Cerro Bernal between the Pacific Coast and the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, the residents of Fracción Mujular would have had close access to important trading routes used throughout Mesoamerica's history. My analysis of the site's ceramics, obsidian, and other excavated artifacts shows a long history of interaction with both local and distant polities from across Mesoamerica. We now know that Fracción Mujular was occupied from the Early Classic through Late Postclassic and that the site's inhabitants maintained strong ties to Central Mexico throughout these periods, including during times of considerable political upheaval. Fracción Mujular outlasted its larger neighbor of Los Horcones, entering a period of florescence following that latter site's decline at the end of the Early Classic. An analysis of the ceramics of Los Horcones emphasizes the site's long chronology, as well as its history of regional interaction. Obsidian sourcing from Fracción Mujular indicates that the settlement had access through trade to at least 11 different sources from across Mexico and Guatemala; a very high level of diversity for such a modest site. Obsidian source distributions also display a strong spatial and temporal pattern throughout the settlement, which may correspond to regional political and economic shifts during the Early Classic to Late Classic transition. Work at Fracción Mujular shows how small-scale settlements can be active players in regional exchange systems while displaying considerable resiliency in the face changing political and economic landscapes.

The Pacific coast of Soconusco was at the forefront of cultural developments from the time of its earliest farmers in the Formative period through the Spanish conquest. Yet until now the Postclassic archaeology of this region has remained poorly known. This book presents the results of archaeological fieldwork at the political center Acapetahua and other key Postclassic sites in Soconusco by two leading Mesoamericanist archaeologists. The authors' analyses of artifacts shed light on subsistence activities, the production of textiles and other craft items, commercial exchange, and the social context of life in this area. The Late Postclassic period was a dynamic and innovative time when peoples from all parts of Mesoamerica were drawn together by processes of commercial and stylistic interaction. Until recently, however, Postclassic archaeological data has been limited to a few areas. Postclassic Soconusco Society now adds a key region to the overall picture. This work will serve as both a basic reference on the Postclassic archaeology of a key region and a case study in the local impacts and manifestations of ancient empires and world-systems.

Book excerpt: The Soconusco region, a narrow strip of the Pacific coast of Mexico and Guatemala, is the location of some of the earliest pottery-using villages of ancient Mesoamerica. Mobile early inhabitants of the area harvested marsh clams in the estuaries, leaving behind vast mounds of shell. With the introduction of pottery and the establishment of permanent villages (from 1900 B.C.), use of the resource-rich estuary changed. The archaeological manifestation of that new estuary adaptation is a dramatic pattern of inter-site variability in pottery vessel forms. Vessels at sites within the estuary were about seventy percent neckless jars -- "tecomates" -- while vessels at contemporaneous sites a few kilometers inland were seventy percent open dishes. The pattern is well-known, but the the settlement arrangements or subsistence practices that produced it have remained unclear. Archaeological investigations at El Varal, a special-purpose estuary site of the later Early Formative (1250-1000 B.C.) expand possibilities for an anthropological understanding of the archaeological patterns. The goal of this volume is to describe excavations and finds at the site and to propose, based on a variety of analyses, a new understanding of Early Formative assemblage variability.

Guy David Hepp summarizes the results of several seasons of fieldwork and laboratory analysis under the aegis of the La Consentida Archaeological Project, drawing on various forms of evidence—ground stone tools, earthen architecture, faunal remains, human dental pathologies, isotopic indicators, ceramics, and more— to reveal how transitions in settlement, subsistence, and social organization at La Consentida were intimately linked. While Mesoamerica is too diverse for research at a single site to lay to rest ongoing debates about the Early Formative period, evidence from La Consentida should inform those debates because of the site’s unique ecological setting, its relative lack of disturbance by later occupations, and because it represents the only well-documented Early Formative period village in a 300-mile stretch of Mexico’s Pacific coast. One of the only studies to closely document multiple lines of evidence of the transition toward a sedentary, agricultural society at an individual settlement in Mesoamerica, La Consentida is a key resource for understanding the transition to settled life and social complexity in Mesoamerican societies.
