Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Man and Beast There are few people so dull or so frivolous that they are not interested in the beginnings of human history. We all long at times for some Aladdin's lamp which shall enable us to thread our way through the fogs and mists with which time has shrouded the old story. The traditions of men have responded to this yearning in various ways, some allegorical and some prosaic; while in some, again, the too fantastic story has been worked over and made to look more reasonable by later hands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remains of Prehistoric Man in the Dakotas The work of exploration of the remains of prehistoric man in Dakota Territory was begun by me in the summer of 1883, and since then I have completed the exploration of 40 of the ancient artificial mounds in that region, have inspected the exterior of very many others, and have examined numerous specimens obtained from the latter. Twenty-four of the mounds explored were in Ramsey county, 8 were in Benson county, 6 in Walsh county, and 2 in Grand Forks county. Others studied to some extent were in these and other counties of what is now North Dakota, and still others were on the Fort Sisseton reservation and elsewhere in South Dakota. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Man and His Story: A Sketch of the History of Mankind From the Earliest Times It would surely be a great pity if ordinary intelligent readers could no longer follow comfortably the most interesting of all sciences, and we have therefore avoided technical terms wherever it was possible, and we have tried to keep the main outline clear and consecutive. I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to avoid repeating what has already been given in full detail in books of the same nature, and preferred foreign authorities as being less accessible to the general reader. It must also be remembered that to every question discussed in the following pages, there are not merely two, but several sides. The solution is always a matter of probability and balance of evidence. I have selected that solution which seems most satisfying, and which best explains the facts as at present known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Man: Researches Into the Origin of Civilisation in the Old and the New World But have we then no alternative between man plus the arti ficialities of civilisation, and man minus the influential Operation of moral laws which have their efficient equivalents in the instincts of all other animals; or can we not realize even in theory an intermediate normal condition? Such questions are replete with interest, whatever he the value of the answers rendered here to some Of the difficulties they suggest. The ethnologist does indeed study man from the same point of View as the mere naturalist but to do so to any good purpose, this essential difference between man and all other animals must be kept in View that in him a being appears for the first time among the multitude of animated organi zations, subject to natural laws as they are, but including within himself the power of interpreting and controlling the Operation of those laws; of accumulating and transmitting experience; and, above all, of looking in upon the workings of his own mind, and recog nising as part of his nature a system of moral government which he may obey or resist, though not with impunity. Our aim, therefore, is to isolate him from extraneous influences, and look, if possible, on man per 86; or at least where he can be shown to have attained maturity, exposed only to such influences as are the Ofl'spring of his own progress. In so far as this is possible we may hope to recover some means of testing man's innate capacity, and of determining by comparison what is common to the race. Book Man Past and Present Classic Reprint

Download or read book Man Past and Present Classic Reprint written by A. H. Keane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man, Past and Present In the preface to the Ethnology, which formed the first volume of the Cambridge Geographical Series, a promise was held out that it might be followed by another dealing more systematically with the primary divisions of mankind. The present volume appears in part fulfilment of that promise. In the Ethnology were discussed those more fundamental questions which concern the human family as a whole - its origin and evolution, its specific unity, antiquity and primitive cultural stages, together with the probable cradle and area of dispersion of the four varietal divisions over the globe. Here these divisions are treated more in detail, with the primary view of establishing their independent specialisation in their several geographical zones, and at the same time elucidating the difficult questions associated with the origins and inter-relations of the chief sub-groups, and thus bridging over the breaks of continuity between "Man Past and Present." The work is consequently to a large extent occupied with that hazy period vaguely called prehistoric, when most of the now living peoples had already been fully constituted in their primeval homes, and had begun those later developments and migratory movements which followed at long intervals after the first peopling of the earth by pleistocene man. By such movements were brought about great changes, displacements, and dislocations, involving fresh ethnical groupings, with profound modifications, or even total effacements of racial or linguistic characters, and complete severance from the original seats of the parent stocks. In some cases the connecting ties are past recovery, so that the ethnical, like the geological, record must always remain to some extent a mutilated chapter in the history of the world and of humanity. Book Primitive Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book Primitive Man Classic Reprint written by Louis Figuier and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primitive Man The Editor of the English translation of "L'Homme Primitif" has not deemed it necessary to reproduce the original Preface, in which M. Figuier states his purpose in offering a new work on pre-historic archaeology to the French public, already acquainted in translation with the works on the subject by Sir Charles Lyell and Sir John Lubbock. Now that the book has taken its position in France, it is only needful to point out its claims to the attention of English readers. The important art of placing scientific knowledge, and especially new discoveries and topics of present controversy, within easy reach of educated readers not versed in their strictly technical details, is one which has for years been carried to remarkable perfection in France, in no small measure through the labours and example of M. Figuier himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Prehistoric Men of Kentucky

Download or read book The Prehistoric Men of Kentucky written by Bennett H. Young and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prehistoric Men of Kentucky: A History of What Is Known of Their Lives and Habits, Together With a Description of Their Implements and Other Relics and of the Tumuli Which Have Earned for Them the Designation of Mound Builders In 1890 the author was induced to begin the collection of prehistoric implements. Thomas G. Went, a learned and intelligent antiquarian, who was for many years Chief Assistant in the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction of Kentucky, at Frankfort, first induced me, by the gift of a small and well-selected cabinet, to enter upon what was to become a delightful and permanent study and pursuit. When a member of the Constitutional Convention of Kentucky, in September, 1890, a delegate incidentally mentioned to me that Mr. Went had some beautiful arrowheads, and that they would well repay a visit and investigation. This was done on the following day, and these specimens were found to be marvels of beauty. Few comparatively in number, but which had been selected by a careful, discriminating, and enthusiastic student, they were worthy of all the admiration that could be felt or expressed in their examination. During the conversation he inquired if his visitor were a member of the Constitutional Convention. Having received an affirmative reply, he remarked that there was one member of the Convention from Louisville he was extremely anxious to meet - Bennett H. Young. Book Ancient Types of Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ancient Types of Man Classic Reprint written by Arthur Keith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Types of Man Age the length of this period is estimated provisionally at about years. On entering the Late Paleolithic Period the stone implements used by Europeans are seen to be of a more massive and rather rougher type of workmanship. Animals were then living in Central and South Europe which have disappeared - the reindeer and the mammoth. The period just named falls within the latter part of the geologists' Pleistocene Period. The Late Paleolithic Period was preceded by the early paleolithic period, one of very great but uncertain length. It lies within the glacial period, which was broken by at least three temperate intervals. The Early Paleolithic Period probably covers the last two of these intervals. Its duration is variously estimated from to years. At the beginning of this period the dominant race of Europe was the Neanderthal type of man at its close Europeans were of the modern type. Download or read book On the Remains of Later Prehistoric Man written by W. H. Dall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Remains of Later Prehistoric Man: Obtained From Caves in the Catherina Archipelago, Alaska Territory, and Especially From the Caves of the Aleutian Islands The island contains active volcanoes, as I am informed, and in the immediate vicinity of the cave are solfataras, from which steam constantly arises, and the soil is said to be warm to the touch. The rock is of a whitish and ferruginous color and sharp grain. Specimens examined by Dr. Endlich, of the Smithsonian Institution, prove to be a siliceous sinter, containing a little alumina and soda, and some hydrous sesquioxide of iron. In the spectroscope traces of lithium and potassium and, possibly, a trace of lime were seen. From this, and from the fact that the atmosphere of the cave is said to have been quite hot, rendering it uncomfortable to remain in, it is possible that the cave itself may be the crater of a small extinct solfatara.
