Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Booker-shortlisted author acclaimed as having "no literary precedent" (Independent) comes a gently absurd examination of the systems that trap and frustrate us daily. Fans of dry humor will enjoy this tale of mishap and folly, told from the point of view of a bus driver who's been charged to maintain a precise distance between himself and other buses--a directive that leads him to ignore the very passengers he's meant to serve. Witty, allegorical, and intelligent, this is a novel for all those who have ever run for a bus, only to have it pull away as they reach its doors. Showcasing all of Mills' strengths, it is the perfect reintroduction for American readers to an incomparable talent.

Book excerpt: The site of Man Bac in the Red River Delta of Vietnam, one of the most meticulously excavated and carefully analysed of Southeast Asian archaeological sites in the past few years, is emerging as a key site in the region. This book carefully analyses the human and animal remains and puts them into context. The authors describe in detail the health status, the unusual demographic profile and the interestingly divergent affinities of the cemetery population, and discuss their meaning, particularly in association with evidence for the use of marine and terrestrial animal resources; they argue convincingly that the site documents a time when the face of the region's population was undergoing a fundamental shift, associated with a changing economic subsistence base. Physical anthropologists and archaeologists have argued for years over the timeline, the manner and the very nature of Southeast Asian population history, and this book is essential reading in this debate. Two supporting appendices describe the individual remains in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982 in the Identity of Man Professor Clark considers a problem which has puzzled men from the authors of the books of the Old Testament to Charles Darwin and his successors: how to reconcile the animal appetites of men with their awareness of gods and their intimations of immortality. What is it that differentiates us most decisively from the other Primates? He argues that the distinction is to be found primarily in the fact that, whereas the behaviour of other animals is largely dictated by their genes, we follow (or reject) cultural patterns inherited through belonging to societies shaped by history. Whereas other animals behave in a broadly homogenous way within breeding populations men adhere to the diversity of cultural traditions observed by ethnographers among peoples surviving on their fringes of the modern world and reconstructed by archaeologists from the cultural fossils of antiquity. Grahame Clark has written an original and fascinating study, drawing both on his lifetime’s experience of archaeological material and on a wide range of other sources to throw new light on the question of man’s identity. This is a must read for archaeologists and anthropologists.

Book The Lure of the Wild Men

  • Publisher : Jain Publishing Company

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zhang Jinxing, during the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century, has become a Chinese folk hero, dedicating himself single-mindedly to the challenge of revealing what has evaded Chinese anthropologists and zoologists for centuries: the existence of the yeren, or wild men. From his dream of becoming a modern-day explorer, he forged a personal approach to field research derived from his apprenticing with scientists in the field rather than through formal study—the result is a uniquely humane perspective on how human beings can and should coexist with other creatures and organisms on earth. His modest, ingenuous diary accounts reveal him to be capable of great empathy and great bravery, as he faces frostbite, starvation, encounters with wild animals, and loneliness to pursue his idealistic mission at great personal cost.

Book Prehistoric Man in Palliser Bay

Download or read book Prehistoric Man in Palliser Bay written by Foss Leach and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prehistoric Man in Palliser Bay presents, in 14 papers by 9 authors, the results of a pioneering, multifaceted, archaeological research programme carried out between 1969 and 1972 in the south-eastern coastal part of the North Island of New Zealand. The volume reviews archaeological evidence from the time of first settlement from Polynesia through to the 19th century. More than 25 excavations were carried out, focussing on midden sites, house areas, kumara storage pits and prehistoric gardens. Laboratory analysis of middens revealed details of the history of fishing, birding and sea mammal hunting. Artefacts of stone, bone and shell are described in the volume, and analysis of land snails provides evidence for environmental change during the period of occupation. Analysis of human bone samples provided detailed medical histories of the people who lived in the region. Two concluding chapters consider the significance of the evidence for early horticulture in Palliser Bay and the nature of prehistoric communities in the area.
