Book excerpt: Analysis of lithic assemblages from 12 prehistoric sites in the upper South Skunk River valley with components ranging from Late Paleoindian through Late Woodland indicates that prehistoric people in the area exploited a wide variety of local and exotic raw materials and organized their lithic reduction technologies in more complex ways than previous models have suggested. With only a few exceptions, all lithic raw material types, regardless of particular physical properties and quality, seem to have been utilized in very similar ways. In general, amorphous core reduction was implemented with reduced frequency as distance from the raw material sources increased. Amorphous cores, however, seem to have been transported over considerable distances, obscuring the role mobility may have played in prehistoric organization of lithic technology.

Book excerpt: A lithic technology consists of a set of techniques for shaping and working stone, and a knowledge of the properties and characteristics of the materials utilized. Lithic technology is the foundation of non-metallurgical cultures; stone is directly used in making many types of stone tools as well as indirectly in fashioning tools from other substances. Lithic technology is an important aspect for the archaeologist to study, if only for the practical consideration that on most prehistoric sites, stone tools and debitage are the only material culture preserved. Reconstruction of the lithic system aids not only in the technological interpretation of a prehistoric society. As technology is interconnected with other aspects of culture, it can be used to infer spatial patterning of activities, connections between groups through the study of long distance trade in lithic raw materials, and aspects of social organization. This paper is concerned with one facet of lithic technology. Because a knowledge of the working properties of lithic raw materials is prerequisite to the effective manufacture and use of stone tools, changes in the characteristics of the stone will cause concurrent changes in the rest of the technology. Heat treatment is the intentional alteration of properties of stone through controlled heating and cooling. These physical changes are exploited by selectively heating raw materials to allow the more efficient manufacture and subsequent use of tools. Heat treatment can be used to change a poor quality stone into a more workable material. In particular, heating increases the ease and control of knapping. Soft percussion and pressure flaking techniques may be used on a stone which would be difficult to flake in the natural state. Controlled knapping of heat altered material produces larger forms, in general, than knapping of similar forms of untreated material. Heated material may be flaked to a thinner tool edge, and the resultant tool may therefore be more efficient for cutting tasks. Heat treatment of lithic raw materials thus redefines the local resources deemed usable by the flintknapper, and increases the control and sophistication of the technology.

Book excerpt: From the American Side I went to the USSR for the first time in 1982 to attend the 11th meeting of the International Union for Quaternary research (INQUA) held at the Moscow State University. At that time relations between our two countries were anything but congenial and many restrictions were placed on our viewing the archaeological and paleontological collections and labora tory facilities. This was not the ideal climate for the free exchange of ideas needed for meaningful research. However, it was obvious to us that the strained relations did not extend to scientific discussions between scholars. We left that meeting well aware that if the problems of prehistoric Old World-New World relationships were to be resolved, it would eventually require cooperative research efforts within the world community of archaeologists. At that time, the pre-Clovis problem in New World archaeology was foremost in the minds of many North American researchers: tool technology and assemblages were being studied as a possible means of establishing cultural relationships across the Bering Strait, Clovis sites and mammoth kills were being looked at with new ideas for interpretation, and New World researchers realized that to resolve these questions they had to become familiar with the archaeological record of northeast Asia. A chance meeting of the writer with Olga Soffer in 1983 led to serious discussions of the sites on the Russian or East European Plain.

This report presents the findings of an test excavation of the site done to determine the archaeological significance of the cave, to understand the extent and nature of intact cultural deposits, and to determine their ages. The excavation of roughly 15 cu m of undisturbed deposits revealed more than 1 m of complexly stratified deposits and superimposed features from roughly 3000 years of site occupancy.

The American South west and Mesoamerica: Systems of Prehistoric Exchange is the first of two volumes that seek to provide current information regarding regional exchange on a conti nental basis. From a theoretical perspective, these volumes provide important data for the comparative analysis of regional systems relative to sociopolitical organization from simple hunter-gatherers to those of complex sociopolitical entities like the state. Although individual regional exchange systems are unique for each region and time period, general patterns emerge relative to sOciopolitical organization. Of significant interest to us are the dynamic processes of change, stability, rate of growth, and collapse of regional exchange systems relative to sociopolitical complexity. These volumes provide basic data to further our under standing of prehistoric exchange systems. The volume presents our current state of knowledge about regional exchange systems in the American Southwest and Mesoamerica. Each chapter synthesizes the research findings of a number of other researchers in order to provide a synchronic view of regional interaction for a specific chronological period. A diachronic view is also prOvided for regional interaction in the context of the developments in regional SOciopolitical organization. Most authors go beyond description by proposing alternative models within which to understand regional interaction. The book is organized by geographical and chronological divisions to pro vide units of the broader mosaic of prehistoric exchange systems.
