Book Prehatching Development of the Fathead Minnow pimephales Promelas Rafinesque

Download or read book Prehatching Development of the Fathead Minnow pimephales Promelas Rafinesque written by United States. Environmental Protection Agency. Office of Research and Development and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas Raf., presents a classical model of teleostean embryogenesis. Its prehatching development has been divided into 32 stages, each representing an easily observed interval in the developmental continuum. Embryos were examined live and histologically under controlled laboratory conditions. Fertilization, early cleavage, epiboly, and organogenesis are very similar to that of other cyprinids except for the tiiming of the appearance of specific structures. Hatching was found to occur in approximately 120 hours post-fertilization at 25 degrees celcius. Rapid embryonic development, coupled with a short generation time of 3-6 months under laboratory conditions, make it a useful native North American species for studies in experimental embryology.

Book Morphological Considerations

Download or read book Morphological Considerations written by Peter K.T. Pang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertebrate Endocrinology: Fundamentals and Biomedical Implications, Volume 1: Morphological Considerations provides information pertinent to vertebrate endocrine systems, which has significant contributions to basic biological and biomedical research. This book discusses the practical implications of the endocrinological studies. Organized into 15 chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the endocrine process in lower vertebrates, which has provided basic information about the understanding of mammalian and human systems. This text then discusses the pituitary gland, which is considered to be functionally and structurally the most complex organ of the endocrine system. Other chapters consider the function of the pineal organ as a sensory organ capable of perceiving light stimuli in poikilothermic vertebrates. This book discusses as well the caudal neurosecretory system in lampreys, hagfish, holocephalans, and dipnoans. The final chapter provides the comparative morphology of the classical vertebrate endocrine organs. Endocrinologists, biologists, graduate students, and researchers will find this book useful.

Book Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates Volume 1

Download or read book Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates Volume 1 written by David Norris and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-05-04 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of volumes represents a comprehensive and integrated treatment of reproduction in vertebrates from fishes of all sorts through mammals. It is designed to provide a readable, coordinated description of reproductive basics in each group of vertebrates as well as an introduction to the latest trends in reproductive research and our understanding of reproductive events. Whereas each chapter and each volume is intended to stand alone as a review of that topic or vertebrate group, respectively, the volumes are prepared so as to provide a thorough topical treatment across the vertebrates. Terminology has been standardized across the volumes to reduce confusion where multiple names exist in the literature, and a comprehensive glossary of these terms and their alternative names is provided. A complete, essential and up to date reference for research scientists working on vertebrate hormones and reproduction - and on animlals as models in human reproductive research Covers the endocrinology, neuroendocrinology, physiology, behaviour and anatomy of vertebrate reproduction Structured coverage of the major themes for all five vertebrate groups allows a consistent treatment for all Special chapters elaborate on features specific to individual vertebrate groups and to comparative aspects, similarities and differences between them

Book A Systems Biology Approach to Advancing Adverse Outcome Pathways for Risk Assessment

Download or read book A Systems Biology Approach to Advancing Adverse Outcome Pathways for Risk Assessment written by Natàlia Garcia-Reyero and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social pressure to minimize the use of animal testing, the ever-increasing concern on animal welfare, and the need for more human-relevant and more predictive toxicity tests are some of the drivers for new approaches to chemical screening. This book focuses on The Adverse Outcome Pathway, an analytical construct that describes a sequential chain of causally linked events at different levels of biological organization that lead to an adverse health or ecotoxicological effect. While past efforts have focused on toxicological pathway-based vision for human and ecological health assessment relying on in vitro systems and predictive models, The Adverse Outcome Pathway framework provides a simplified and structured way to organize toxicological information. Within the book, a systems biology approach supplies the tools to infer, link, and quantify the molecular initiating events and the key events and key event relationships leading to adverse outcomes. The advancement of these tools is crucial for the successful implementation of AOPs for regulatory purposes.
