Researchers have examined factors that affect persistence for traditional-aged students with research focusing on quantitative studies that fail to acknowledge the individual experiences of persistence. Likewise, there is minimal research on Latino/a adult students and their experiences with persistence at community colleges. This dissertation study examined the Latino/a adult student at the community college to gain a better understanding of their lived experiences of persistence. This study took place at an urban, two-year institution in south Texas that has a high number of Hispanic or Latino/a students and a low number of adult students. For this study, I examined the following overarching research question: Looking through the lens of Latino/a adult students, what explains the phenomenon of their persistence at the community college? This study utilized a phenomenological, qualitative approach to explore the overarching question. The study followed a phenomenological methodology in order to focus on the lived experiences of the participants and to further explore the phenomenon of persistence. Two semi-structured interviews and a critical incident reflection were used to gather data from the participants. The themes that emerged from the data analysis were the following: the past will not define my future, moving into higher education, finding my place in higher education, aiming for a better life, what matters to me, making connections, and looking into a mirror. Sub-themes were identified for each of these themes as well, and study findings were interpreted in light of existing research literature and the study's conceptual framework encompassing Schlossberg's Transition Theory (1981) and Yosso's theory of Community Cultural Wealth (2005). The study adds to the body of literature on Latino/a adult students and their persistence and also provides implications for practice for practitioners in the field of higher education.

Book excerpt: The lack of student persistence is a burgeoning issue and over the last 40 years has become a national concern among researchers, administrators, policymakers and practitioners. Given the low persistence rates of first-year students at America's community colleges, leaders are searching for useful and successful strategies that will aid in closing the gap in student attrition. Successful completion of a degree or certificate is often considered the great economic equalizer in today's society from a public and cultural perspective. The purpose of this research study was to empirically investigate the odds ratio associated with predicting persistence that exists between first-time freshmen students who lived in campus housing and those who live off-campus at a large-city community college referred to as LCCC. Specifically, the focus of this study was to determine whether living in on-campus housing, receiving needs-based federal financial aid (Pell Grant), ethnicity, gender and enrolling in one or more developmental education courses are predictors of persistence. This study was predicated on the collection of quantitative data from a large-city community college's student information system from the years 2010 through 2013. The researcher has concluded based on the data analysis of this research study the results were statistically insignificant for those students living on-campus when compared to those students living off-campus. An analysis of Ethnicity as a predictor of persistence revealed that in the short-term African-American students actually persisted at higher rates than their counterparts. However, in three of the last four semesters analyzed, African-Americans persisted at significantly lower rates than White students. Lastly, an analysis of the students who were enrolled in Developmental Education (Remedial) courses suggested that the odds are significantly lower concerning persistence versus their counterparts. However, it must be noted that both Hispanic students and those receiving needs-based financial aid (Pell) attrition was no worse than their counterparts. Based on the complex nature of both the community college student and the unique opportunity for them to live on-campus, additional data is required in order to measure and evaluate whether housing status promotes improved academic persistence. The reported research studies pertaining to community colleges and living on-campus are meager at best. Book excerpt: Purpose The purpose of this journal-ready dissertation was to examine the 1-year persistence rates of Hispanic community college students in Texas for the 2007-2008 through the 2013-2014 academic years. Specifically, the relationship of the 1-year persistence rates for Hispanic students as a function of their institutional status (id est, stayed or transferred) was analyzed. The 2-year persistence rates of Hispanic community colleges in Texas were also analyzed for the 2006-2007 through the 2012-2013 academic years. In addition, the graduation rates of Hispanic and White students in Texas community colleges from the 2008-2009 through the 2014-2015 academic years were examined. Furthermore, the degree to which a trend might be present in the graduation rates of Hispanic and White students at Texas community colleges was also ascertained. Method In this investigation, archival data from the Texas Higher Education Board Interactive Accountability system were downloaded and analyzed in each of the three empirical studies. Specifically, archival data were obtained for the 1-year and 2-year persistence rates of Hispanic Texas community college students. Graduation data were obtained for Hispanic and White students attending Texas community colleges. Findings Inferential statistics revealed the presence of statistically significant differences in the 1-year persistence rates of Hispanic students in Texas community colleges by institutional status in the 2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2011-2012, 2012-2013, and 2013-2014 academic years. Additionally, inferential statistics revealed the presence of statistically significant differences in the 2-year persistence rates of Hispanic students in Texas community colleges by institutional status in the 2006-2007 through the 2012-2013 academic years. The 1-year and 2-year persistence rates of Hispanic Texas community college students were higher when Hispanic students stayed at the same community college rather than when they transferred to a different community college. In regard to graduation rates, inferential statistical analyses revealed statistically significant differences in the 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and the 2012-2013 academic years. Although both Hispanic and White students had low graduation rates from Texas community colleges, the average graduation rates of Hispanic students were lower than the average graduation rates of White students. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to expand the literature on student persistence in community colleges through three research innovations. First, the literature on student persistence in community colleges was expanded by applying theory to the identification and testing of predictors. Second, it was expanded by validating retention prediction equations using independent data to test the generalizability of predictors. Third, it was expanded by determining the extent to which student major potentially mediates retention rates for community colleges. Aggregated student entry characteristic, external environment, and internal campus environment variables were obtained for 127 public community colleges in six states using the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Data for six student majors were obtained from each state's community college governance structure. Descriptive statistics, multivariate linear regressions (stepwise), and ANOVA tests were used to address five primary research questions, with significance noted at p>.05. The Braxton, Hirschy, and McClendon (2004) Theory of Student Departure at Commuter Colleges and Universities was used as the theoretical model for the study. The findings include: (a) a statistical model based on the Braxton et al. (2004) theory that can be developed to explain community college institutional retention, (b) the model equations validate with independent data, (c) the Braxton et al. (2004) model is ineffective for predicting retention by student major, and (d) retention rates differ by student major. The percentage of Black students enrolled, institutions located in small cities or suburban areas, and the number of part-time students enrolled emerged as generalizable predictors of institutional retention.

Traditional models have addressed the need for students to be integrated into the academic and social domains of the college campus. Recently, critical theorists and researchers have been questioning the relevance of the traditional models for students of color. The development of student empowerment through the establishment of student-initiated retention projects and the support of institutional agents has been proposed as a more meaningful goal to increase the persistence of students of color. Ethnic student organizations have also been shown to be important in giving students of color a sense of belonging. While acculturative stress has been shown to be a factor in the well-being of Latino students, it has not been considered as a contributor to persistence decisions. This study used mixed methods to collect data from surveys and interviews of Latino community college students. Analysis of this data showed that persistence is negatively correlated to acculturative stress. Additionally, certain acculturation strategies play a role in the persistence decisions of students. Both traditional and emerging models of persistence are compared in order to propose a new model which includes consideration of acculturative stress and student empowerment.

African American women attending community college in Los Angeles were interviewed on their educational experiences and the meaning of persistence to them. The results of this study will offer researchers and community college leaders a broader and more in-depth perspective into the essence of persistence for African American female students. By focusing on individual students rather than groups of students, the study examines how persistence works in the day-to-day lives of these students. The study expresses these women's concerns and may help make colleges more aware of their needs and issues.The significance of this study is threefold. The first is to help a minority group of students who currently are trying to benefit from a community college education to find a voice so that they can describe their college experiences. The second is to describe, based both on the specific perceptions of the students interviewed as well as insights gained from the study of the relevant literature, the specific impact that urban community colleges have on the persistence of African American female students. The third is to add to the currently limited scholarly literature regarding the persistence of African American female students attending urban community colleges.
