Book How the Family Influences Children s Academic Achievement

Download or read book How the Family Influences Children s Academic Achievement written by Shui Fong Lam and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1996-12-31 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies the interactive effects of family status and family process on children's academic achievement, drawing on research with a group of students in two inner-city schools to illustrate how parenting style mediates the influences of family structure and socio-economic status on academic performance. Concludes that an integrated model is superior to the traditional view of family status and process as independent factors. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: This study reports on levels of achievement among rural black and white Southerners of relatively low socioeconomic status. The 262 persons who were the objects of the study were reared in Millfield, North Carolina. They were first studied by Baughman and Dahlstrom (1968) in the early 1960s when they were in the eighth grade. Ten years later, this study located and, through interviews, collected data from 175 or 67% of the 262 eighth-grade subjects. Conclusions include the following. Performance on the eighth grade standardized tests of intellectual and academic ability was found to be clearly related to subsequent achievement, both educational and economic. Although there was a lack of racial differences in educational attainment, black subjects achieved significantly lower job statuses and earned significantly lower incomes than white subjects. The study found a strong association of the family size cluster with achievement. This finding is consistent with population theorists' arguments about how having many children or having children close together creates burdens on a family system which often reduce opportunity. Few significant relationships were found between migration and achievement. In fact, most of the Millfield eighth graders did not move very far away from home. However, living away from Millfield, even if only for a brief period of time, was associated with greater achievement. For comparison purposes, the study also presents findings from major longitudinal studies of similar psychological characteristics. Trends in social change in this area of the South are also described to give the reader a feel for the people and the times in which they matured. (Author/RM).

Book The Effect of Family Poverty on Children s Academic Achievement

Download or read book The Effect of Family Poverty on Children s Academic Achievement written by Ferin Ford and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study examined whether or not parent-adolescent discussions and neighborhood poverty mediated the relationship between family poverty and academic achievement in reading and math. The study used data for eighth grade participants in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study to test these relationships. Parents of participants reported on the extent of parent-student discussion in the home. Direct cognitive assessments were given to the eighth graders during their spring of the 2006-07 school years to assess their academic achievement in reading and math. Finally, zipcodes for the participants' homes were matched with data from the 2000 census to determine the percentage of households in each zipcode below the poverty line. Multiple regressions were used to test for possible mediation effects. The results indicated neighborhood poverty partially mediated the relationship between family poverty and academic achievement in both reading and math. There was no significant correlation between parental discussion and family poverty, and consequently parental discussion could not be a mediator of the association of family poverty with academic achievement. However, there was a significant interaction between family poverty status and parental discussion in the prediction of academic achievement indicating that parental discussion is more valuable in affluent families than in poverty stricken families. Further research is needed to examine why parental discussion is not as valuable in low income families. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for understanding the relation of academic achievement to family poverty.

Book The Effect of Family Context Variables on Learning related Skills and Subsequent Academic Achievement

Download or read book The Effect of Family Context Variables on Learning related Skills and Subsequent Academic Achievement written by Olivia Schlager and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study examined the contribution of various family context variables to the development of learning-related skills that are associated with positive academic outcomes. A substantial body of research underscores the strong association between certain nonacademic learning-related skills in young children and academic achievement over time. However, less is known about the potential for the family and home environment to foster or impede the development of these learning-related skills, particularly among at-risk learners with language delays and low socioeconomic status. A path model was used to test the hypothesis that learning-related skills measured in first grade would mediate the relationship between family contextualvariables (parent demoralization and family stress, parent support for learning, and parent expectations and aspirations) measured at kindergarten and reading outcomes measured at second grade in a group of students oversampled for language and literacy skill deficits. This hypothesis was partially supported, with significant associations found between the parent demoralization and parent support for learning predictors and learning-related skills, which were, in turn, predictive of second grade literacy outcomes, even after controlling for baseline levels of literacy skill and learning-related skills. Implications for family-school partnerships andcollaboration are discussed.

Book Applying an Ecological Model to Predict Adolescent Academic Achievement

Download or read book Applying an Ecological Model to Predict Adolescent Academic Achievement written by Claudia Anagurthi and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between multiple intrapersonal, microsystem, and macrosystem factors. The predictor variable was academic achievement. The theoretical model used was Bronfenbrenners' Ecological Systems Theory and Bandura's Social Learning Theory. Participants in this study were ninth to twelfth grade high school students from a charter school that catered to students from urban and suburban backgrounds (N = 312). Students were from various socioeconomic backgrounds but primarily of African American and Latino descent. The students were asked to complete several surveys assessing their demographics and the variables grouped by their ecological contexts as follows: Intrapersonal Variables (1) Academic Self-efficacy; (2) Academic Engagement; (3) Intrinsic Value for Learning; (4) Goal-oriented self-regulation; Microsystem Variables: (1) Parents Pro-Educational Attitudes, (2) Peers Academic Orientation, (3) School Climate, (4) Neighborhood Structure and the Mesosystem Variable (1) Parent-teacher/ parent-school communication. Academic Risk Behaviors were also assessed. The data analysis approach was consistent with Ecological Systems Theory. Results of the current study suggest that the intrapersonal factors of self-efficacy and academic engagement are most predictive of academic achievement, while the microsystem variable of parental pro-educational attitudes towards education also significantly predicted academic achievement. A moderation analysis revealed that when schools provide meaningful opportunities for participation for students, students tended to generally have higher academic engagement, while living in a family with higher SES boosted that relationship. All analyses were controlled for differences in SES, ethnicity, and grade. One unexpected finding was that the differences among variables existed by grade. Meaning and significance of results were discussed.
