Book excerpt: History and statistics have shown us that intimate partner violence (IPV) has generally been divided between male perpetrators and female victims. Theories on why males batter are prevalent in the literature, but less so for their female counterparts. Recent statistical trends and law enforcement records indicate that women are being arrested at an increasing rate for this traditionally male crime. In light of this increase in female offending, the current study seeks to understand whether the correlates that are true for violent crime in general effect male and female perpetrators of intimate partner violence differently. Literature suggests that the reasons for male and female IPV are different. If the theories of explanation for male and female offending are varied then perhaps the correlates of crime are also different. This research examines 628 offenders arrested for intimate partner violence in Charlotte, NC. The participants consist of 539 males and 83 females. The incidents in question occurred from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2003, and were collected using the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Depm1ment computer data software KBCOPS. The project examines common correlates of age, race, prior offending and victimization, location of violent incident, and the influence of alcohol/drugs on the level of harm cause by the offender to the victim. The prediction is that these correlates do not uniformly predict male and female offenders' level of assault.

To assist the Air Force in its continued efforts to combat sexual assault within its ranks, we reviewed the existing empirical literature on the characteristics and behaviors of adult perpetrators who commit sexual assault against other adults. Our search was not limited to studies of military populations. While a vast majority of the existing literature has focused on sole male perpetrators who assault female victims, we identified some research on other types of perpetrators, including female sexual assault perpetrators, men who perpetrate assault against other men, and perpetrators who participate in group sexual assault. This body of research indicates that adult perpetrators are diverse in terms of their demographics, background characteristics, and motivations. Moreover, research indicates that sexual assault perpetration is likely influenced by a combination of factors, including an individual's developmental and family history; his or her personality, including attitudes/cognitions; and environmental factors, including peer attitudes and alcohol consumption. The complexity of factors that influence sexual assault perpetration and the multiple pathways that lead to an attack make it difficult to predict whether an individual is prone to commit sexual assault. While predicting sexual assault perpetration is problematic, we identified a number of factors related to perpetration that may be relevant for intervention efforts and offer recommendations for the Air Force"--Publisher's web site.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to expand the knowledge surrounding same-sex partner violence, by attempting to identify some common predictors and correlates of partner violence among gay males. This study focused particular attention examining: (1) How age, income, education, and race impact the likelihood of being a victim of gay male domestic violence? (2) How an individual's affiliation with the gay community impacts their likelihood of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) victimization? (3) How childhood sexual victimization and childhood abuse by a parent impacts the likelihood of being a victim of gay male domestic violence? and (4) What the relation is between use of alcohol and being a victim of partner violence? To address prior methodological limitations of small snowball and convenient sampling in research, this study utilized the Urban Men's Health Study (UMHS). The UMHS is a large probability telephone sample of men who have sex with men from the geographic city limits of 4 major U.S. cities. Almost 1 out of 4 (24%) respondents (N = 2,881) had experienced IPV in the past five years, while 4% indicated they were forced into sex by their partner in the past five years. Results found that those variables significantly related to IPV were age, HIV-positive status, alcohol frequency, childhood sexual abuse, childhood abuse, and witnessing parental abuse. Predicted probabilities were then calculated to further examine HIV-positive status, alcohol frequency, and childhood sexual abuse. Regarding intimate rape victimization, age, childhood sexual victimization, and childhood abuse each significantly predicted the probability of respondents being raped by an intimate partner. A predicted probability was calculated to highlight the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and intimate partner rape victimization. Education, race, and gay affiliation did not have a significant relationship to either IPV or intimate rape victimization.

Book excerpt: Sexual aggression is a pervasive issue on college campuses, and many risk factors have been studied in an attempt to understand and reduce perpetration. In the current study, I focus on men"s history of child abuse, romantic rejection, and sources of self-worth as potential predictors of sexual aggression perpetration. As part of an ongoing online cross-sectional study (target N = 600), data were analyzed for 72 college men. Descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations were used to characterize the current sample describe patterns of relationships between study variables. Results indicate that all forms of child abuse were significantly positively associated with each other, but only child neglect was associated with romantic rejection experiences in adulthood. Child abuse was also negatively correlated with family, virtue, and competition of sources of self-worth. Although too few participants reported sexual aggression perpetration to conduct inferential statistical tests in the current sample, patterns of means indicate that child abuse was higher among men who reported perpetration.

Book excerpt: The current study attempted to expand on existing literature regarding predictors of perpetrating intimate partner sexual violence to determine if there are unique predictors or sexual violence that differentiate it from physical abuse. It was hypothesized that men’s controlling, dominant and jealousy behaviors and verbal aggression exhibited during a conflict discussion would significantly predict both increased intimate partner sexual coercion and physical assault perpetration. Furthermore, these predictors were expected to be more predictive of sexual coercion than physical assault perpetration. Violent couples were recruited from the community (N = 159). The results demonstrated that men’s controlling behavior was a significant predictor of both sexual coercion perpetration and physical assault perpetration. Additionally, results found that different types of jealousy were unique to sexual coercion and physical assault. Specifically, behavioral jealousy was significant predictor of increased sexual coercion perpetration whereas and men’s emotional jealousy was a significant predictor of increased physical assault perpetration. Men’s emotional jealousy was significantly more predictive of physical assault perpetration more than sexual coercion perpetration. No predictors studied better predicted increased sexual coercion perpetration more than physical assault perpetration. These findings suggest that sexual coercion perpetration may be another type and form of physical assault without unique predictors.
