Book Predictive Tools for Coolant Development

Download or read book Predictive Tools for Coolant Development written by AV. Gershun and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to develop an accelerated aging test (AAT) for conventional and extended life coolants that will predict coolant composition and performance after 100 000 or more miles (160 930 km) of use. The procedure was developed by examining the effects of a series of cooling system metals, their surface area and the amount of each used, test temperature, glycol concentration, and test time on important chemical and physical properties of the test coolant. The chemical and physical properties evaluated included the accumulation of glycol degradation products, the depletion rate of active inhibitors, the pH drop, and the presence of corrosion products in solution. In addition, the test coolant performance was evaluated in ASTM D 1384 and D 4340. The effects of variation in the test procedure on the coolant were compared to actual coolant from extended duration fleet tests. The test procedure selected gave test coolant with composition, physical properties, and performance that compared favorably with the fleet test fluid. The test performance was validated by comparing the properties of a series fluids after this test to corresponding fluids removed from vehicles after extended use. An example of fluid development using this procedure is presented. Further areas of investigation are suggested. It is recommended that the general test procedure be considered for adoption as an ASTM test method for evaluation of the extended performance of fluids in automotive and light duty cooling systems.

Book Mathematical Predictive Models for Cooling Ponds and Lakes

Download or read book Mathematical Predictive Models for Cooling Ponds and Lakes written by Kathleen Ann Hurley Octavio and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Part B a computer code, '"MITEMP: M.I.T. Transient Temperature Prediction Model for Natural Reservoirs and Cooling Impoundments," is presented as a feasible and efficient tool for the prediction of transient performance of man-made impoundments. Particular emphasis is placed on waste heat dissipation from steam-electric power stations. The code allows the simulation of the physical regime (temperature and flow patterns) of impoundments as a function of design and for long time periods. The code contains the following elements: (1) Natural Deep Lake and Reservoir Model, (2) Deep Stratified Cooling Pond Model, (3) Shallow Vertically Mixed Dispersive Cooling Pond Model, and (4) Shallow, Vertically Mixed Recirculating Cooling Pond Model. The physical and mathematical basis for the present computer code is developed in an earlier report entitled, "Mathematical Predictive Models for Cooling Ponds and Lakes, Part A: Model Development and Design Considerations," by G. Jirka, M. Watanabe, K.H. Octavio, C. Cerco and D.R.F. Harleman, R.M. Parsons Laboratory for Water Resources and Hydrodynamics, Technical Report No. 238, December 1978. The user's manual presented herein gives a detailed description of the computational structure of MITEMP and discusses input and output requirements. The application to several case studies is presented. A complete code listing is given in the appendix, as are some sample computations. In Part C, an analytical model is developed to predict the transient performance of shallow, vertically mixed cooling ponds. This model is suggested as an aid in the initial design or screening process, eliminating the need for repeated use of MITEMP for long term simulations. When a candidate design(s) is selected, its long term performance can be analyzed with the more precise MITEMP.

Book Preliminary Study of Heat Transfer Correlation Development and Pressure Loss Behavior in Curved High Aspect Ratio Coolant Channels Preprint

Download or read book Preliminary Study of Heat Transfer Correlation Development and Pressure Loss Behavior in Curved High Aspect Ratio Coolant Channels Preprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convective heat transfer is important for maintaining life and reliability of the main combustion chamber in liquid rocket engines. Enhancing the regenerative cooling circuit's ability to maintain wall temperature with minimal pressure losses improves engine life and has the potential to reduce the turbopump output pressure. High aspect ratio coolant channels have been shown to reduce wall temperature with little pressure increase. Additionally, rocket engine cooling circuits are curved and the mechanisms responsible for curvature enhancement remain unclear for tall, narrow passages and appropriate predictive tools have not been developed. The objective of this research is to study the mechanisms responsible for improved cooling performance and to develop heat transfer correlations for use in high aspect ratio coolant channels having conducting side walls and subjected to asymmetric heating on the concave side, thus modeling a channel in a slotted liner. Tests are conducted with water in a single, curved channel subjected to heat flux on the outer radius wall and in a straight channel with heat input to an analogous wall.
