The Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) and the Rzeszow University of Technology (RzUT) accepted the challenge of jointly organizing the 4th edition. The conference aims to promote scientific and technical excellence in the fields of Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) in aerospace and other fields of technology. The Conference joins together the industry with the academia research. This book covers four main topics: Guidance and Control, Control Theory Application, Navigation, UAV Control and Dynamic. The papers included focus on the most advanced and actual topics in guidance, navigation and control research areas: · Control theory, analysis, and design · ; Novel navigation, estimation, and tracking methods · Aircraft, spacecraft, missile and UAV guidance, navigation, and control · Flight testing and experimental results · Intelligent control in aerospace applications · Aerospace robotics and unmanned/autonomous systems · Sensor systems for guidance, navigation and control · Guidance, navigation, and control concepts in air traffic control systems For the 4th CEAS Specialist Conference on Guidance, Navigation and Control the International Technical Committee established a formal review process. Each paper was reviewed in compliance with good journal practices by independent and anonymous reviewers. At the end of the review process papers were selected for publication in this book.

Book excerpt: There is a requirement for rigorous analytical tools that can be used to analyse the flying and handling qualities deficiencies of novel personal-air-vehicles (PAV), prior to experimental flight testing. In more recent years, ground-based simulation has become a critical component of aircraft-level design and a core requirement of the procuring activity. For small footprint, personal, air-vehicle systems the analysis of pilot workload has often relied, exclusively, on pilot-in-the-loop flight test and full immersion simulation experiments. In order to facilitate the preliminary stages of aircraft design there is need for an off-line, quantitative, rating method that can be brought to bear in the absence of an adequate pilot representation. The prediction of aircraft handling qualities is complicated, however, by the need to accurately assess pilot effort. This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of the control design and handling qualities of a manually controlled, novel, PAV. The handling qualities of the vehicle are assessed, first by reference to the Rotorcraft Aeronautical Design Standard (ADS33-E-PRF), then by pilot/vehicle analysis using models of pursuit, compensatory, and regressive human pilot behaviour. In the latter case, handling qualities levels, pilot-induced oscillation rating levels, and tracking performance are predicted. Consideration is given to both linear and nonlinear pilot/vehicle behaviour. Approximate bounds on the off-nominal linear vehicle model stability derivatives are explored and the expected operational and service flights envelope, temporal and corridor constraints examined. Finally, validation of the proposed pilot modelling techniques and rating criterion are presented, and the use of traditional rotary and fixed-wing HQ rating boundaries are examined with application to a prototype, rotary-wing PAV system. The research work presented in this dissertation provides a means of (1) identifying the feasible design space of a unique aircraft based upon predicted and expected levels of handling qualities and performance, and (2) determining compliance with both civil and (where required) military requirements for manned operation of PAV systems. 2 The research presented may provide a useful template for assessing the handling qualities of more novel, personal air-vehicle concepts prior to pilot-in-the-loop simulation or flight testing.

Book excerpt: An analytical technique for investigating transport aircraft handling qualities is exercised in a study using models of two such vehicles, a Boeing 747 and Lockheed C-5A. Two flight conditions are employed for climb and directional tasks, and a third included for a flare task.The analysis technique is based upon a "structural model" of the human pilot developed by Hess. The associated analysis procedure has been discussed previously in the literature, but centered almost exclusively on the characteristics of high-performance fighter aircraft. The handling qualities rating level (HQRL) and pilot induced oscillation tendencies rating level (PIORL) are predicted for nominal configurations of the aircraft and for "damaged" configurations where actuator rate limits are introduced as nonlinearites. It is demonstrated that the analysis can accommodate nonlinear pilot/vehicle behavior and do so in the context of specific flight tasks, yielding estimates of handling qualities, pilot-induced oscillation tendencies and upper limits of task performance. A brief human-in-the-loop tracking study was performed to provide a limited validation of the pilot model employed.

The present paper reviews one modeling technique which was developed in the early 1970's and has been widely used since then: the optimal control model of the human pilot (OCM). The model has been validated in a number of tasks and used in the analysis as well as the synthesis of manual control loops.
