When it is necessary to extract information from a random process, we are frequently faced with the problem of analyzing and solving special systems of linear equations. In the general case these systems are overdetermined and may be characterized by additional properties, such as update and shift-invariance properties. Usually, one employs exact or approximate least-squares methods to solve the resulting class of linear equations. Mainly during the last decade, researchers in various fields have contributed techniques and nomenclature for this type of least-squares problem. This body of methods now constitutes what we call the theory of linear prediction. The immense interest that it has aroused clearly emerges from recent advances in processor technology, which provide the means to implement linear prediction algorithms, and to operate them in real time. The practical effect is the occurrence of a new class of high-performance adaptive systems for control, communications and system identification applications. This monograph presumes a background in discrete-time digital signal processing, including Z-transforms, and a basic knowledge of discrete-time random processes. One of the difficulties I have en countered while writing this book is that many engineers and computer scientists lack knowledge of fundamental mathematics and geometry.

Yet theory alone cannot resolve the important issues at stake. Only after the robustness of policy regimes has been carefully examined with empirical evidence will policymakers and economists be able to reach more of a consensus. This pathbreaking volume takes major steps forward in meeting the need for a combination of theoretical and empirical evaluations of alternative policy regimes. Bringing together individuals and groups doing pioneering research on macroeconomic interaction, it explores what approach to monetary policy would lead to superior performance by individual national economies and the world economy as a whole. Many parts of the book use the analytical techniques of stochastic simulation, an evaluation procedure increasingly employed at the frontier of empirical economic analysis. The book provides a summary of the hey issues involved in evaluating policy regimes and clarifies the relationships among those issues. These experiences made me aware of a gap between what economic graduate students are taught about vector-valued time series and what is available in recent system literature. Wishing to fill or narrow the gap that I suspect is more widely spread than my personal experiences indicate, I have written these notes to augment and reor ganize materials I have given in these courses and seminars. I have endeavored to present, in as much a self-contained way as practicable, a body of results and techniques in system theory that I judge to be relevant and useful to economists interested in using time series in their research. I have essentially acted as an intermediary and interpreter of system theoretic results and perspectives in time series by filtering out non-essential details, and presenting coherent accounts of what I deem to be important but not readily available, or accessible to economists. For this reason I have excluded from the notes many results on various estimation methods or their statistical properties because they are amply discussed in many standard texts on time series or on statistics.
