Book Predicting the Mobility and Burial of Underwater Unexploded Ordnance UXO Using the UXO Mobility Model ESTCP 200417

Download or read book Predicting the Mobility and Burial of Underwater Unexploded Ordnance UXO Using the UXO Mobility Model ESTCP 200417 written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ESTCP Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Mobility Model (MM) validation program expanded the capabilities of the vortex lattice based model previously developed by the Navy for mine modeling applications and then validated the MM with surrogate ordnance in two instrumented field demonstration, one in each of the most common coastal environmental types (Trailing Edge and Biogenic Reef):U.S. Army Filed Research Facility (FRF), Duck, NC, and pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), Kauai, HI. The MM correctly predicted all the basic behaviors of the surrogates; the skill factor for modeling migration and burial exceeded 0.8 in both cases, a favorable result with respect to modeling coastal processes and mine burial prediction. The MM is calibrated for the most common coastal environmental and can use wither default environmental conditions or site-specific data inputs to more accurately predict overall probability of movement. It is noted that the primary cost drivers for varying levels of analysis is predicated on the amount of site data available.

Book Simple Parameterized Models for Predicting Mobility Burial and Re exposure of Underwater Munitions

Download or read book Simple Parameterized Models for Predicting Mobility Burial and Re exposure of Underwater Munitions written by Carl T. Friedrichs and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compilation of 761 observations of scour-induced burial and 406 observations of initiation of motion of UXO-like objects are presented. The main factors that increase the scour-induced burial-to-diameter ratio (B/D) under (i) currents and (ii) waves are the (i) Shields parameter (S) and (ii) Keulegan-Carpenter number. For cylinders under waves, B/D additionally increases as the current component parallel to wave orbitals decreases, as S increases, and as the angle between wave orbitals and a cylinder's axis increases. Cylinders bury most, then spheres, and conical frustums bury least. Simple models dependent on these variables explain 85% of observed variance in B/D. Onset of motion is parameterized by fi S_Ucrit, where S_Ucrit is the critical object mobility parameter, and fi accounts for inertia forces from time-varying pressure gradients. S_Ucrit is observed to decrease systematically as D/k increases, where k is the bed roughness. Theory combined with observations lead to fi S_Ucrit = a1(D/k)^b1. Observations give a1 = 1.75 and b1 = - 0.72, which explains 89% of the observed variance in fi S_Ucrit.

Book Reduction of a Ship s Magnetic Field Signatures

Download or read book Reduction of a Ship s Magnetic Field Signatures written by John J. Holmes and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decreasing the magnetic field signature of a naval vessel will reduce its susceptibility to detonating naval influence mines and the probability of a submarine being detected by underwater barriers and maritime patrol aircraft. Both passive and active techniques for reducing the magnetic signatures produced by a vessel's ferromagnetism, roll-induced eddy currents, corrosion-related sources, and stray fields are presented. Mathematical models of simple hull shapes are used to predict the levels of signature reduction that might be achieved through the use of alternate construction materials. Also, the process of demagnetizing a steel-hulled ship is presented, along with the operation of shaft-grounding systems, paints, and alternate configurations for power distribution cables. In addition, active signature reduction technologies are described, such as degaussing and deamping, which attempt to cancel the fields surrounding a surface ship or submarine rather than eliminate its source. Table of Contents: Introduction / Passive Magnetic Silencing Techniques / Active Signature Compensation / Summary

Download or read book Mine Drop Experiment MIDEX written by Anthony F. Gilless and published by . This book was released on 2001-09-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Navy's Impact Burial Prediction Model (IMPACT 25) determines the amount of burial a mine experiences upon impacting the marine sediment. Impact burial calculations are derived primarily from the sediment characteristics and from the mine's two-dimensional air and water phase trajectories. Accurate burial prediction requires that the model's air and water phase trajectories reasonably mimic the objects true trajectory. IMPACT 25 assumes that the objects are cylindrical in shape and calculates the air and water phase trajectories entirely from momentum equations. In order to determine what effect a varying center of mass has on a mine's water phase trajectory, a Mine Drop Experiment was conducted. The experiment consisted of dropping three cylinders of various lengths into a pool where the trajectories were filmed from two angles. The controlled parameters were, the ratio of mine length to diameter, initial velocity, center of mass position and drop angle. Results indicate that center of mass position has the largest influence on the object's trajectory and that accurate trajectory modeling requires the inclusion of both momentum and moment equations.
