Book excerpt: This study investigates constitutive behavior, material properties and fatigue damage under constant and variable amplitude uniaxial and multiaxial loading conditions, with the goal of developing CAE analytical techniques for durability and life prediction of elastomeric components. Such techniques involve various topics including material monotonic and cyclic deformation behaviors, proper knowledge of stress/strain histories, fatigue damage quantification parameters, efficient event identification methods, and damage accumulation rules. Elastomeric components are widely used in many applications, including automobiles due to their good damping and energy absorption characteristics. The type of loading normally encountered by these components in service is variable amplitude cyclic loading. Therefore, fatigue failure is a major consideration in their design and availability of an effective technique to predict fatigue life under complex loading is very valuable to the design procedure. In this work a fatigue life prediction methodology for rubber components is developed which is then verified by means of analysis and testing of an automobile cradle mount made of filled natural rubber. The methodology was validated with component testing under different loading conditions including constant and variable amplitude in-phase and out-of-phase axial-torsion experiments. The analysis conducted includes constitutive behavior representation of the material, finite element analysis of the component, and a fatigue damage parameter for life predictions. In addition, capabilities of Rainflow cycle counting procedure and Miner's linear cumulative damage rule are evaluated. Fatigue characterization typically includes both crack nucleation and crack growth. Therefore, relevant material deformation and fatigue properties are obtained from experiments conducted under stress states of simple tension and planar tension. For component life predictions, both fatigue crack initiation approach as well as fatigue crack growth approach based on fracture mechanics are presented. Crack initiation life prediction was performed using different damage criteria. The optimum method for crack initiation life prediction for complex multiaxial variable amplitude loading was found to be a critical plane approach based on maximum normal strain plane and damage quantification by cracking energy density on that plane. The fracture mechanics approach was used for total fatigue life prediction of the component based on specimen crack growth data and FE simulation results. Total fatigue life prediction results showed good agreement with experiments for all of the loading conditions considered.

Book excerpt: An initiative is underway to realign the test procedure where the emphasis is placed on more cost-effective and less empirical laboratory predictions of fatigue life of aircraft tires. The initial goals are to define the deformation and fracture mechanisms of various critical regions of aircraft tires and to identify the parameters that control the process of fatigue damage accumulation for cord-reinforced elastomer composite elements. The first phase of our study is focused on the delamination of bias aircraft tire carcass in the shoulder area. The study examined the effect of a broad range of the combination between different loading parameters on the fatigue resistance of angle-plied elastomer composites. Among them, stress amplitude was found to play a dominant role in determining fatigue lifetime of composites. The damage accumulation process of composites was accompanied by a continuous increase of cyclic strain (i.e., dynamic creep), temperature and acoustic emission (AE). The dynamic creep rate and the rate of temperature increase were inversely proportional to the fatigue life according to a power law. When the minimum cyclic stress was high enough, distinctly different rates of AE signal accumulation could be assigned to the cord-matrix debonding and delamination failure modes. The results demonstrated a great potential of the measurement of local strain change, heat generation, and AE as a viable experimental technique for real-time monitoring of the damage accumulation process. Finite element analysis was used to approximate the stress and strain components in the composite coupon specimens. Two finite element models were created using 75 and 1500 elements, respectively. The 1500 element model was shown to produce much better results for the ?z stress distribution, while both models produced similar results for the ?x and ?xz stress distributions. The predictions were in good agreement with the total axial load measured experimentally.

This review of Rubber Product Failure outlines and illustrates the common causes of failure, while addressing ways of avoiding it. There has been increasing pressure to improve performance so that rubbers can be used at higher temperatures and in harsher environments. For example, the under-the-bonnet temperature has increased in some vehicles and new medical devices require longer lifetimes in potentially degrading biological fluids. The expectations of tyre performance in particular are increasing, and retreads have been in the spotlight for failures. The definition of failure depends on the application. For example, a racing car engine seal that lasts for one race may be acceptable, but in a normal car a life span of 10 years is more reasonable. If appearance is critical as in surface coatings and paints, then discolouration is failure, whilst in seals leakage is not acceptable. Each rubber product must be fit for the use specified by the consumer. Failure analysis is critical to product improvement. the cause of the problem can be much harder to find. It can range from a design fault to poor material selection, to processing problems, to manufacturing errors such as poor dimensional tolerances, to poor installation, product abuse and unexpected service conditions. The rubber technologist must become a detective, gathering evidence, understanding the material type and using deductive reasoning. Testing and analysis of failed materials and components add to the information available for failure analysis. For example, stored aged tyres appeared superficially to be alright for use, but on drum testing small cracks grew more quickly than in new tyres leading to rapid failure in service. Quality control procedures such as product inspection, testing and material quality checks can help to reach 100 percent reliability. In critical applications such as electricians' gloves for high voltage working, gloves are inspected before each use, while engine seals may be routinely replaced before the expected lifetime to avoid problems. in the literature is not high. However, several reviews have been written on specific products and references can be found at the end of this review. Around 400 abstracts from papers in the Polymer Library are included with an index. Subjects covered include tyre wear and failure, seals, engine components, rubber bonding failure, rubber failure due to chloramine in water, tank treads, gloves and condoms, medical devices and EPDM roofing membranes.
