After replicating an existing model that details individual-level factors predicting sexual coercion, an alternative model incorporating peer-level factors was built and tested against the existing model. Findings suggest that perceived peer attitudes concerning violence against women significantly influence corresponding individual attitudes. Furthermore, peer group density was found to significantly moderate the relationship between perceived peer attitudes toward violence against women and hostile individual attitudes toward women, in that highly dense peer groups had the strongest positive influence on individual members. The main effect of peer network density on hostile individual attitudes, however, was significantly negative-suggesting that individuals with highly dense peer groups tend to have less hostile attitudes toward women. Taken together, the present findings suggest that perceived peer attitudes and the structure of peer networks have a notable bearing on individual attitudes of violence and hostility toward women, factors long known to predict violent physical and sexual behaviors targeted at women. Book excerpt: This study examined the roles of social dominance orientation and ambivalent sexism in predicting sexual aggression through the pathways of conformity to masculine role norms, gender role conflict, and acculturative stress. This study contributes to a growing understanding of the relations among attitudes towards women, beliefs about masculinity, and social dominance orientation and sexually aggressive behaviors. Hierarchical regressions examined the role that gender role conflict, masculine role norm adherence, acculturative stress, social dominance orientation, and ambivalent sexism played in predicting self-reported sexual aggression for 267 male college students who identified as ethnic minorities. Hispanic and Asian participants emerged as the largest groups of participants in this study. Adherence to traditional masculine role norms was found to predict self-reported sexual aggression, while gender role conflict, acculturative stress, social dominance orientation, and ambivalent sexism did not. Moderation analyses revealed that Hispanic or Asian racial identification did not serve as a significant moderator of adherence to traditional masculine role norms and self-reported sexual aggression. Study findings suggest that interventions to decrease sexual aggression may benefit from paying attention to adherence to traditional masculine role norms

Book excerpt: Past research found a link between men's body shame and their willingness to engage in sexual aggression (Rudman & Mescher, 2010). Further, men who have been bullied (e.g., teased about their sexuality) are more likely to report body shame (Shelton & Liljequist, 2002). The present research tests a causal relationship between rejecting men for homosexuality and sexual aggression. Participants were rejected either for a sexual reason (accused of being gay), for no reason, or they were not rejected (controls) by either a male or female phantom confederate. I predicted that men accused of being gay would show more hostility toward women and female rape victims, and score higher on measures of sexual aggression, compared with the remaining two groups. I expected this pattern to be moderated by men's body shame and their negative affect in response to rejection. That is, men high on body shame or who reacted negatively to being accused of being gay should be especially likely to retaliate against women. Results demonstrated that men rejected by a female confederate for being gay who were both high on body shame and upset by the manipulation responded with increased sexual aggression, including scoring higher on a behavioral measure of rape (i.e., a rape analogue).

The sequential mixed-methods study began with qualitative preliminary work, which led to the development of the cross sectional quantitative study implemented later. In the preliminary work phase, vignettes depicting sexual violence among college students were tested on undergraduate participants. Written participant responses shaped questions later used on the cross sectional quantitative survey. Following the preliminary work, a cross sectional survey on UGA college male undergraduates was conducted, which included a variety of measures on factors known to be related to sexual violence perpetration. The survey included the previously-tested vignettes, along with Likert-style questions formed from themes developed through the preliminary work. This study proposed that group membership, alcohol use, rape myth acceptance, hypermasculinity, sex-related alcohol expectancies, and empathy level could predict sexual violence acceptance, as measured through vignette responses, and previous sexually violent behavior. Results showed that males who scored higher on rape myth acceptance had higher sexual violence acceptance. Males who were members of a fraternity or club sport scored higher risk on two of the four vignettes measuring sexual violence acceptance, though there were differences between the groups regarding which vignettes yielded higher scores. Fraternity membership predicted previous sexual violence behavior, while having no affiliation with a fraternity, club sport or other registered student organization predicted the lowest likelihood of having engaged in sexual violence. Participants who scored higher risk on alcohol use, rape myth acceptance, hypermasculinity and personal sex-related alcohol expectancies were more likely to have committed sexual violence compared with those who scored lower on those measures. Those who committed sexual violence scored higher risk on sexual violence acceptance for two of the four vignettes when compared with those who did not commit sexual violence. Implications for this study are that results may assist in the development of primary prevention programs targeting college men at high-risk for committing sexual violence, and shifting the focus away from survivor behavior that prevents being assaulted while placing the responsibility for change on preventing and reforming perpetrator behavior.

To assist the Air Force in its continued efforts to combat sexual assault within its ranks, we reviewed the existing empirical literature on the characteristics and behaviors of adult perpetrators who commit sexual assault against other adults. Our search was not limited to studies of military populations. While a vast majority of the existing literature has focused on sole male perpetrators who assault female victims, we identified some research on other types of perpetrators, including female sexual assault perpetrators, men who perpetrate assault against other men, and perpetrators who participate in group sexual assault. This body of research indicates that adult perpetrators are diverse in terms of their demographics, background characteristics, and motivations. Moreover, research indicates that sexual assault perpetration is likely influenced by a combination of factors, including an individual's developmental and family history; his or her personality, including attitudes/cognitions; and environmental factors, including peer attitudes and alcohol consumption. The complexity of factors that influence sexual assault perpetration and the multiple pathways that lead to an attack make it difficult to predict whether an individual is prone to commit sexual assault. While predicting sexual assault perpetration is problematic, we identified a number of factors related to perpetration that may be relevant for intervention efforts and offer recommendations for the Air Force"--Publisher's web site.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual coercion, or pursuing sexual activity with a nonconsenting individual, involves a variety of tactics both verbal and physical. This phenomenon is rarely studied among sexual minority populations due to the widely held assumption that perpetration is a heterosexual male behavior. This assumption is not supported, as sexual aggression also occurs in same-sex encounters between men and women (e.g., Krahé & Berger, 2013). Sexual coercion is highly prevalent on college campuses (Krebs, Lindquist, Warner, Fisher & Martin, 2007). The current study examined whether empirically supported risk factors for heterosexual individuals also predict sexual coercion perpetration in individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, and bisexual. In addition, predictors possibly unique to sexual minority members were examined. A total of 180 college students (67 heterosexual men, 29 heterosexual women, 43 gay/bisexual men, and 41 lesbian/bisexual women) were included in the current study. Approximately one-third of the participants reported engaging in at least one sexually coercive behavior. There were no significant differences between groups in coercion perpetration. Psychopathic traits appear to be a universal predictor of sexually coercive behavior in this sample as they were associated with coercion by both men and women regardless of sexual orientation. Sexual orientation did not moderate the relationship between any predictors and coercive behavior. This finding indicates that some risk factors known to predict coercion in heterosexual males are applicable to other populations. Limitation, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.

The survey also included questions on stalking, sexual harassment, and the role played by new technologies in women's experiences of abuse. In addition, it asked about their experiences of violence in childhood. Based on the detailed findings, FRA suggests courses of action in different areas that are touched by violence against women and go beyond the narrow confines of criminal law, ranging from employment and health to the medium of new technologies."--Editor.
