Explicit phonological skills-awareness training was given to 62 kindergarten children, the "treatment" group, while a control group of 51 "nontreatment" children were in traditional-curriculum kindergarten classes. The Predictive Reading Profile (PRP) was used to establish these students' acquisition of phonological-awareness skills over the next three years. Data from two curriculum-based measures (CBM) of reading progress -- reading fluency rate, and reading fluency accuracy -- were analyzed to examine the relationship between these students' training and their reading success in first, second, and third grade. The Minnesota Curriculum Assessment (MCA) summative reading achievement data at the end of third grade was also examined. This study showed one educationally significant difference between the two groups: the first-grade measure of reading accuracy. The treatment children read more words correctly in first grade. The implications for the kindergarten curriculum and for future research are discussed in this practical study of classroom practice.
