Grade retention is used as a practice to help low-performing students overcome their academic deficits. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of grade retention on student achievement. The goal of this study was to determine whether there was a significant difference in the growth performance scores and EVAAS predicted scores of sixth grade students retained in early grades first through third as compared to students retained in later grades fourth through sixth utilizing the NC End-of-Grade Tests in reading and mathematics. Separate Fisher's exact tests for reading and mathematics were used to determine the frequency of distribution of student growth performance scores in these subjects as measured by the within and/or above expectations versus below expectations categories from the NC ABCs model to compare early retainees and later retainees to see if the relationship of performance to category of retention differed more than expected by chance. Also, separate Fisher's exact tests for reading and mathematics were conducted to examine the frequency of distribution of student growth scores in these subjects as measured by the below expectation versus within or above expectations categories from the EVAAS predicted scores to compared early retainees and later retainees to see if the relationship of performance to category of retention differed more than expected by chance. According to these findings in this study, when examining academic change scores for reading and mathematics a significant relationship does not exist between the growth performance of early and later retainees. When examining EVAAS predicated scores, it was also indicated that a significant relationship does not exist between the growth performance of early and later retainees. However, the data did indicate that a higher percentage of later retainees met and/or scored above expectations in reading when compared to the early retainees.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Over the last two decades, the field of educational data mining (EDM) has been focusing on predicting the correctness of the next student response to the question (e.g., [2, 6] and the 2010 KDD Cup), in other words, predicting student short-term performance. Student modeling has been widely used for making such inferences. Although performing well on the immediate next problem is an indicator of mastery, it is by far not the only criteria. For example, the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center's theoretic framework focuses on robust learning (e.g., [7, 10]), which includes the ability to transfer knowledge to new contexts, preparation for future learning of related skills, and retention - the ability of students to remember the knowledge they learned over a long time period. Especially for a cumulative subject such as mathematics, robust learning, particularly retention, is more important than short-term indicators of mastery. The Automatic Reassessment and Relearning System (ARRS) is a platform we developed and deployed on September 1st, 2012, which is mainly used by middle-school math teachers and their students. This system can help students better retain knowledge through automatically assigning tests to students, giving students opportunity to relearn the skill when necessary and generating reports to teachers. After we deployed and tested the system for about seven months, we have collected 287,424 data points from 6,292 students. We have created several models that predict students' retention performance using a variety of features, and discovered which were important for predicting correctness on a delayed test. We found that the strongest predictor of retention was a student's initial speed of mastering the content. The most striking finding was that students who struggled to master the content (took over 8 practice attempts) showed very poor retention, only 55% correct, after just one week. Our results will help us advance our understanding of learning and potentially improve ITS.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study was to test the effect that teacher retention has on third grade student performance on the North Carolina End-of-Grade tests for reading and math. The goal of the researcher was to identify if a relationship existed between the predictor variable of teacher experience and the dependent variables of end-of-grade tests in reading and math. The theoretical foundation was gleaned from teacher retention, highstakes testing, and accountability. The sample was a heterogeneous group of third grade students. The participants were from a school system located in the southern Piedmont region of North Carolina, which serves urban and rural families. The subjects in the study represent African American, white, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian families and other. The study used a quantitative ex post facto design and all information employed in the study was archival. Two multiple regression equations and correlations assisted in understanding the relationship between teacher retention and third grade student performance on the North Carolina End-of-Grade tests for reading and math. The results indicated that there was a small statistically significant relationship between teacher experience at the third grade level and third grade student performance on the North Carolina End-of-Grade tests for math and reading when the variables of gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status were controlled.
