Book Predicting rate of fire spread ROS in Arizona oak chaparral

Download or read book Predicting rate of fire spread ROS in Arizona oak chaparral written by James R. Davis and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To facilitate field use of the rate of fire spread equation used in Arizona oak chaparral, step-by-step instructions are presented in workbook form. Input data can be either measured or estimated from the tables and figures included; a sample computation form may be duplicated for field use. Solving the equation gives the land manager the guidelines for planning fire control efforts, or for using prescribed fire in the brush type.

Book Predicting Fire Spread in Arizona s Oak Chaparral

Download or read book Predicting Fire Spread in Arizona s Oak Chaparral written by Anson William Lindenmuth and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five existing fire models, both experimental and theoretical, did not adequately predict rate-of-spread (ROS) when tested on single- and multiclump fires in oak chaparral in Arizona. A statistical model developed using essentially the same input variables but weighted differently accounted for 81 percent ofthe variation in ROS. A chemical coefficient that accounts for effects of fuel chemistry on ROS is applied to the model. The model provides usable guidelines for predicting fire spread in Arizona oak chaparral.

Book excerpt: Earth is the only planet known to have fire. The reason isboth simple and profound: fire exists because Earth is the onlyplanet to possess life as we know it. Fire is an expression of lifeon Earth and an index of life’s history. Few processes are asintegral, unique, or ancient. Fire on Earth puts fire in its rightful place as anintegral part of the study of geology, biology, human history, physics, and global chemistry. Fire is ubiquitous in various formsthroughout Earth, and belongs as part of formal inquiries about ourworld. In recent years fire literature has multipliedexponentially; dedicated journals exist and half a dozeninternational conferences are held annually. A host of formalsciences, or programs announcing interdisciplinary intentions, arewilling to consider fire. Wildfire also appears routinely in mediareporting. This full-colour text, containing over 250 illustrations of firein all contexts, is designed to provide a synthesis of contemporarythinking; bringing together the most powerful concepts anddisciplinary voices to examine, in an international setting, whyplanetary fire exists, how it works, and why it looks the way itdoes today. Students, lecturers, researchers and professionalsinterested in the physical, ecological and historicalcharacteristics of fire will find this book, and accompanyingweb-based material, essential reading for undergraduate andpostgraduate courses in all related disciplines, for generalinterest and for providing an interdisciplinary foundation forfurther study. A comprehensive approach to the history, behaviour andecological effects of fire on earth Timely introduction to this important subject, with relevancefor global climate change, biodiversity loss and the evolution ofhuman culture. Provides a foundation for the interdisciplinary field of FireResearch Authored by an international team of leading experts in thefield Associated website provides additional resources

Book Vegetation Dynamics on the Mountains and Plateaus of the American Southwest

Download or read book Vegetation Dynamics on the Mountains and Plateaus of the American Southwest written by John Vankat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-27 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides information essential for anyone interested in the ecology of the American Southwest, including land managers, environmental planners, conservationists, ecologists and students. It is unique in its coverage of the hows and whys of dynamics (changes) in the major types of vegetation occurring on southwestern mountains and plateaus. It explains the drivers and processes of change, describes historical changes and provides conceptual models that diagrammatically illustrate past, present, and potential future changes. All major types of vegetation are covered: spruce-fir, mixed conifer, and ponderosa pine forests, pinyon-juniper vegetation, subalpine-montane grassland, and Gambel oak and interior chaparral shrublands. The focus is on vegetation that is relatively undisturbed, i.e., in natural and near-natural condition, and how it responds to natural disturbances such as fire and drought, as well as to anthropogenic disturbances such as fire exclusion and invasive species

Book excerpt: Regional Silviculture of the United States, 2nd Edition John W. Barrett This is the only regional silviculture text now on the market. It assesses the significant biological, physical, and economic qualities of forest regions in the continental U.S., and their effect on silviculture practices. The first chapter provides an overview of the forests of the U.S. and introduces the topic of social and institutional constraints on silviculture. Subsequent chapters each deal with a specific forest region, are written by a person intimately acquainted with the locality, and follow a regular outline to provide cohesion and facilitate regional comparisons. 1980 551 pp. Forest Ecology, 3rd Edition Stephen H. Spurr and Burton V. Barnes The growing interest and literature in this field created a need for a fresh updating of this classic text. It remains a comprehensive yet highly readable account of real world forests, including ecological aspects of successful forest management. Broad coverage embraces genetics and variation, environmental factors, site, community relations, ecosystem studies, glacial forest history, post-settlement history, compostition and succession. 1980 687 pp. Wildlife Biology, 2nd Edition Raymond F. Dasmann This updated and revised edition of the standard introductory text brings together the principles of ecology and population biology and the practice of wildlife conservation and management. It presents basic information on the value and present status of wild animal life, including a history of human relationships with and attitudes toward wildlife. Examines wildlife within the context of ecosystems, indicating why single-species approaches to conservation and management often fail. 1981 212 pp.
