Now we know better: the majority of children with the disorder continue to display symptoms throughout adolescence and into adulthood. College Students with ADHD is designed to bring the professional reader up to speed. The book reviews the latest findings on ADHD in high school and college students, assessment methods, and pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions. Practical guidelines are included for helping young adults make the transition to college, so they may cope with their disorder and do as well as possible in school and social settings. Book Predicting the Academic Functioning of College Students with Attention deficit hyperactivity Disorder

Download or read book Predicting the Academic Functioning of College Students with Attention deficit hyperactivity Disorder written by Melissa Renee Dvorsky and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of several dimensions of executive functioning (EF), as well as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms, in relation to college students' academic and overall functional impairment. Participants were 62 college students comprehensively diagnosed with ADHD and their parents/guardians who completed measures of symptoms of ADHD, EF, school maladjustment and functional impairment. The primary goal of the study was to evaluate whether parent- and self-ratings of EFs completed at the beginning of the school year longitudinally predict end of the school year academic and overall functioning above and beyond symptoms of ADHD. Mediation analyses controlling for covariates, including gender and transfer student status, were used to determine whether EF deficits mediate the relationship between ADHD symptoms and functioning. Additionally, parent- and student-rated deficits in EFs were examined for agreement as well as the incremental validity of each rater in predicting impairment. Deficits in student-rated self-motivation and parent-rated self-regulation of emotion significantly predicted overall impairment at the end of the year above and beyond symptoms of ADHD. Further, self-report of self-motivation mediated the relationship between ADHD symptoms and overall impairment. In a separate model, student-rated self-organization at the beginning of the year mediated the relationship between ADHD symptoms and end of the year grades. Students with ADHD experience significant difficulties with the transition to college which may lead to the development of increased academic or functional impairment, particularly for students with EF deficits. The present study demonstrates that motivation and organization appear to be particularly important components of academic functioning for college students with ADHD. Overall, findings suggest that EF skills are highly relevant for college students with ADHD with important clinical implications for assessment and treatment. Further studies are needed to confirm the mediational mechanisms of EFs contributing to functional impairments in college students with ADHD.

Book Predictors of Substance Use and Psychological Distress in College Students with and Without ADHD

Download or read book Predictors of Substance Use and Psychological Distress in College Students with and Without ADHD written by Chelsea Z. Busch and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by multiple symptoms related to either hyperactivity/impulsivity or inattention and significant impairment. College students with ADHD experience greater impairment than their typical peers, including substance use behaviors. Although the use of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs is a normative experience of emerging adulthood, as rates of mental health disorders rise among college students, it is important to better understand the relationship between psychological distress (e.g., anxiety, depression) and substance use behaviors. This study sought to examine whether anxiety, depression, and quality of life in first year college students predicted second year substance use; or substance use behaviors of first year college students predicted second year anxiety, depression, and quality of life; and whether these patterns differed between college students with and without ADHD. Results demonstrated that tobacco use in first year of college was associated with increased depressive and anxious symptoms; depressive symptoms in first year of college were associated with increased cannabis use in second year of college; and anxiety symptoms in first year of college were associated with decreased tobacco use in second year of college. There were significant group differences between the ADHD and control groups in the relationship between first year anxiety and second year cannabis use and first year tobacco use and second year anxiety symptoms. Additional research is warranted to better understand these differences and further examine variables (e.g., gender, treatment for ADHD, anxiety, and depression) that may be stronger predictors of both psychological distress and substance use.

Book ADHD Among College Students at Brenau University

Download or read book ADHD Among College Students at Brenau University written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Affecting approximately 11% of college students, Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) for many, is a lifelong condition that is associated with academic, psychological, and social impairments (Dipeolu, 2011; Fleming & McMahon, 2012). Specific negative outcomes for college students typically include lower GPAs, decreased graduation rates, self-reported difficulties in social functioning and a lower quality of life (Advokat et al., 2011; Cherkasova et al., 2013; Fleming & McMahon, 2012). As the enrollment in colleges and universities continue to rise, it is becoming more and more important to assist those students experiencing ADHD in ways that can facilitate their development and help them to overcome the impairments associated with their condition (Cherkasova et al., 2013; Dipeolu, 2011; Fleming & McMahon, 2012; National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2020). Furthermore, the unstructured nature of the college environment often places demands for behavioral self-regulation that can be difficult to manage (Fleming & McMahon, 2012). Despite the unique challenges associated with ADHD in a college setting, very little research has been conducted on this population (Dipeolu, 2011; Fleming & McMahon, 2012). It is the intent of this study to address some of these gaps by providing insight into how ADHD impacts the student population at Brenau University. Specifically, this study will benefit the university by 1) attempting to estimate the prevalence rate of individuals with ADHD at Brenau University, 2) identify the main areas of impairment experienced by students with ADHD and 3) quantify the magnitude of these impairment loci compared to their non-affected peer group"--Page 7.

Book Examining Well being Among College Students with Attention deficit hyperactivity Disorder ADHD and Co morbid Diagnoses

Download or read book Examining Well being Among College Students with Attention deficit hyperactivity Disorder ADHD and Co morbid Diagnoses written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deficit and dysfunction in college students with ADHD diagnoses are now well studied and known to be commonplace in clinical psychology research literature (see Green & Rabiner, 2014, for review). However, areas of positive functioning and psychological well-being have not been well examined. This dissertation aims to investigate the extent to aspects of well-being may be more or less developed among college students carrying a diagnosis of ADHD, in comparison to their college peers. This examination utilized a subset of data collected from annual national "Healthy Minds" survey of college student mental health in the United States (Eisenberg, D., Hunt, J.B., Speer, N., 2013). In total, well-being profiles were examined across 4 distinct groups: 1) students reporting ADHD diagnosis with no co-morbid psychiatric diagnoses, 2) students reporting ADHD diagnosis in addition to co-morbid diagnoses of an anxiety and/or depressive disorder, 3) students reporting an anxiety and/or depressive disorder without ADHD diagnosis, and 4) a comparison group of peers who indicate no history of psychiatric diagnosis. Overall, results suggest ADHD diagnosis alone was not associated with any significant reduction in well-being, and observed deficits may be best accounted for by co-morbid emotional disorder diagnosis. Students indicating diagnoses of anxiety and/or depression were more likely to experience reduced well-being in comparison to their peers across a variety of domains. Implications of these results are discussed further, particularly in regard to understanding well-being among individuals with mental health disorder diagnoses.
