Book SIMULATING GROUNDWATER POLLUTANT TRANSPORT FOR REMEDIATION DESIGN ANTRIM COUNTY MICHIGAN

Download or read book SIMULATING GROUNDWATER POLLUTANT TRANSPORT FOR REMEDIATION DESIGN ANTRIM COUNTY MICHIGAN written by and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : Located in Antrim County, Michigan between the coasts of Torch Lake and Lake Michigan is a hydrocarbon plume that has impacted surrounding residential wells. The plume is comprised of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) and primarily resides in the shallowest groundwater aquifer. The plume is suspected of having originated from an underground storage container that was removed in 1979. A conceptual model was developed for the site, comprising of a simplified hydrogeological model. Groundwater modeling was performed using Aquaveo's groundwater modeling software (GMS). PEST parameter calibration was performed on the hydraulic conductivity and recharge values using data from surrounding wells. These values were then used to create a reasonable steady-state regional flow model. The groundwater flow code MODFLOW was used to simulate the steady-state flow model. The use of MT3DMS simulated the fate and transport of the BTEX to inform remediation design. The model simulated natural attenuation, air injection, and enhanced microbial bioremediation (EMB) to project aquifer behavior and contaminant degradation for each remediation technique. Results showed that EMB degraded the plume the lowest, to 2 mg/L after 91 days. While modeling can be a time-efficient and cost-saving technique, it should be coupled with value engineering and site investigation when designing a remediation system.

Book Development of Michigan s Groundwater Data Base for Natural Resource Management

Download or read book Development of Michigan s Groundwater Data Base for Natural Resource Management written by Michael N. Beaulac and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of Michigan is developing the Statewide Groundwater Data Base (SGDB) which involves microcomputer-based entry, editing, processing and analysis of water well information. Data interfaces are being built to state mainframe systems and to application software on mainframe and microcomputers. A prototype dBaseIII program called WELLKEY has been developed for water well record entry. This program accepts files containing field-verified well locations generated by a digitization program called WELLDIG. Computer maps of information in the groundwater data base can be created using the C-Map microcomputer mapping package. C-Map also provides capabilities for data base query, calculating measurements, data import/export, and hard copy output.

Book The Urban Climate

Download or read book The Urban Climate written by Helmut E. Landsberg and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1981-08-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Urban Climate aims to summarize analytical studies directed toward physical understanding of the rural-urban differences in the atmospheric boundary layer. Attempts to quantify conditions have met with some success. There is certainly a clear understanding of the physical relations that create the climatic differences of urbanized areas. Although some of the earlier classical studies are cited here, the emphasis is on the work done during the last decade and a half. This volume comprises 11 chapters, beginning with an introductory chapter discussing the literature surrounding the topic, its historical development, and the problem of local climate modification. The second chapter presents an assessment of the urban atmosphere on a synoptic and local scale, and examines the observational procedures involved. The following chapters then go on to discuss urban air composition; urban energy fluxes; the urban heat island; the urban wind field; models of urban temperature and wind fields; moisture, clouds, and hydrometeors; urban hydrology; special aspects of urban climate; and finally, urban planning. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of meteorology, urban planning, and urban climatology.

Book Litter Decomposition a Guide to Carbon and Nutrient Turnover

Download or read book Litter Decomposition a Guide to Carbon and Nutrient Turnover written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2005-11-22 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Litter Decomposition describes one of the most important processes in the biosphere - the decay of organic matter. It focuses on the decomposition process of foliar litter in the terrestrial systems of boreal and temperate forests due to the greater amount of data from those biomes. The availability of several long-term studies from these forest types allows a more in-depth approach to the later stages of decomposition and humus formation. Differences between the decay of woody matter and foliar litter is discussed in detail and a different pattern for decomposition is introduced. While teachers and students in more general subjects will find the most basic information on decomposition processes in this book, scientists and graduate students working on decomposition processes will be entirely satisfied with the more detailed information and the overview of the latest publications on the topic as well as the methodological chapter where practical information on methods useful in decomposition studies can be found. Abundant data sets will serve as an excellent aid in teaching process and will be also of interest to researchers specializing in this field as no thorough database exists at the moment. Provides over 60 tables and 90 figures Offers a conceptual 3-step model describing the different steps of the decomposition process, demonstrating changes in the organic-chemical structure and nutrient contents Includes a synthesis of the current state of knowledge on foliar litter decomposition in natural systems Integrates more traditional knowledge on organic matter decomposition with current problems of environmental pollution, global change, etc. Details contemporary knowledge on organic matter decomposition

Book Distributed Hydrological Modelling

Download or read book Distributed Hydrological Modelling written by Michael B. Abbott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-09-30 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the task of the engineer, as of any other professional person, to do everything that is reasonably possible to analyse the difficulties with which his or her client is confronted, and on this basis to design solutions and implement these in practice. The distributed hydrological model is, correspondingly, the means for doing everything that is reasonably possible - of mobilising as much data and testing it with as much knowledge as is economically feasible - for the purpose of analysing problems and of designing and implementing remedial measures in the case of difficulties arising within the hydrological cycle. Thus the aim of distributed hydrologic modelling is to make the fullest use of cartographic data, of geological data, of satellite data, of stream discharge measurements, of borehole data, of observations of crops and other vegetation, of historical records of floods and droughts, and indeed of everything else that has ever been recorded or remembered, and then to apply to this everything that is known about meteorology, plant physiology, soil physics, hydrogeology, sediment transport and everything else that is relevant within this context. Of course, no matter how much data we have and no matter how much we know, it will never be enough to treat some problems and some situations, but still we can aim in this way to do the best that we possibly can.

Download or read book Differential Evolution written by Kenneth Price and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-04 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems demanding globally optimal solutions are ubiquitous, yet many are intractable when they involve constrained functions having many local optima and interacting, mixed-type variables. The differential evolution (DE) algorithm is a practical approach to global numerical optimization which is easy to understand, simple to implement, reliable, and fast. Packed with illustrations, computer code, new insights, and practical advice, this volume explores DE in both principle and practice. It is a valuable resource for professionals needing a proven optimizer and for students wanting an evolutionary perspective on global numerical optimization.
