Book Repair Evaluation Maintenance and Rehabilitation Research Program Predicting Concrete Service Life in Cases of Deterioration Due to Freezing and Thawing

Download or read book Repair Evaluation Maintenance and Rehabilitation Research Program Predicting Concrete Service Life in Cases of Deterioration Due to Freezing and Thawing written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A probabilistic procedure was developed for mathematical prediction of service life of concrete structures subject to damage due to freezing and thawing and was applied to two typical Corps of Engineers' civil works structures, dams and waterways locks. These hindcast applications demonstrate the procedure and provide results encouragingly comparable to observe deterioration. The sensitivity of the results to key material and environmental variables is discussed. Current testing procedures relevant to service life prediction are discussed along with recommendations for improvements in these areas.

Book Freeze Thaw Durability of Concrete

Download or read book Freeze Thaw Durability of Concrete written by J. Marchand and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete durability in climates where freezing and thawing occurs is a continuing problem. It is particularly acute for highway and bridge structures, where de-icing salts are used to combat the effects of frost, snow and ice. These salts can cause damage to concrete and accelerate corrosion of reinforcements. This book presents the latest international research on this area, with contributions from North America and Europe which were presented at an international RILEM workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deterioration and distress of concrete structures in service is a result of a variety of physiochemical processes. These processes include attack by acids or alkali, cycles of wetting and drying, freezing and thawing, alkali - aggregate reaction, etc. However, the most serious deterioration process is caused by chloride diffusion mechanism which then leads to corrosion of reinforcing steel. Moreover, up to date, the accurate service-life prediction of reinforced concrete structures is getting more and more attention. Needless to say, the most advanced models on durability of concrete are found in the field of chloride-induced corrosion. However, most of them are built and developed based on the marine environment of Europe, America and a few countries from Asia, excluding Thailand and Vietnam. For this reason, the requirement of an accurate and suitable model for the local marine environment conditions of Thailand and Vietnam is very imperative because Thailand and Vietnam not only have the same environment conditions, but also have a long coast which mostly affect the durability of concrete structures.

Book Resistance of Concrete to Freezing and Thawing

Download or read book Resistance of Concrete to Freezing and Thawing written by Donald J. Janssen and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1994 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, aimed at improving the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete, consists of three parts. Part I evaluates parameters affecting the freeze-thaw durability of concrete. A modification of the existing standard of method for determining the durability factor of concrete specimens is proposed, and a new procedure for fundamental transverse frequency (used in durability factor calculations) has been developed. Part II focuses on developing better methods for identifying nondurable aggregates, and has resulted in a rapid new test based on the hydraulic fracture of aggregates. Part III describes field experiments to evaluate the freeze-thaw resistance of a number of specified concrete mixes and the use of sealants to mitigate D-cracking. Preliminary field performance results are presented.

Book Service Life Prediction Based on Sorptivity for Highway Concrete Exposed to Sulfate Attack and Freeze thaw Conditions

Download or read book Service Life Prediction Based on Sorptivity for Highway Concrete Exposed to Sulfate Attack and Freeze thaw Conditions written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents a study that investigated permeability as an indicator of the general durability of hydraulic cement concrete. Since many concrete deterioration mechanisms depend on the ingress of moisture and other materials into the concrete, it was theorized that permeability might be a good indicator of durability potential. During the project, it was determined that sorptivity is the most relevant transport characteristic of the concrete. A test method for sorptivity was therefore developed, which has two different setups, in order to better reproduce the exposure condition being simulated. User-friendly software, CONCLIFE, was then developed for estimating the service life of concrete pavements and bridge decks exposed to sulfate attack and freeze-thaw deterioration.

Book Mineral Admixtures in Cement and Concrete

Download or read book Mineral Admixtures in Cement and Concrete written by Jayant D. Bapat and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written to meet the requirements of engineers working in construction and concrete manufacturing, Mineral Admixtures in Cement and Concrete focuses on how to make more workable and durable concrete using mineral admixtures. In particular, it covers pulverized fuel ash (PFA), blast furnace slag (BFS), silica fume (SF), rice husk ash (RHA), and metakaolin (MK), as well as some new admixtures currently under investigation. For each mineral admixture, the book looks at manufacturing and processing, physical characteristics, chemical and mineralogical composition, quality control, and reported experiences. It also examines the provisions of national standards on the admixture’s addition to cement and concrete. References to microstructures and chemistry are kept to a minimum and only discussed to the extent necessary to help readers apply the admixtures in practice. The book also addresses hydration, presenting the relevant chemistry and detailing the impact of adding mineral admixtures to concrete. A chapter on strength and durability explains the mechanisms, models, and standards related to concrete deterioration and how to mitigate carbonation, alkali-aggregate reactions, chloride attack and corrosion of reinforcement, external and internal sulphate attack, decalcification, and freeze-thaw action. This book is a useful reference for practicing engineers and students alike. It brings together, in one volume, information on the materials, hydration, and the strength and durability of cement and concrete with mineral admixtures. Offering a deeper understanding of mineral admixtures, it encourages engineers to more effectively use these and other wastes in cement and concrete to support more sustainable growth of the cement and construction industry.
