Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most evangelical Christians believe that those people who are not saved before they die will be punished in hell forever. But is this what the Bible truly teaches? Do Christians need to rethink their understanding of hell? In the late twentieth century, a growing number of evangelical theologians, biblical scholars, and philosophers began to reject the traditional doctrine of eternal conscious torment in hell in favor of a minority theological perspective called conditional immortality. This view contends that the unsaved are resurrected to face divine judgment, just as Christians have always believed, but due to the fact that immortality is only given to those who are in Christ, the unsaved do not exist forever in hell. Instead, they face the punishment of the "second death"--an end to their conscious existence. This volume brings together excerpts from a variety of well-respected evangelical thinkers, including John Stott, John Wenham, and E. Earl Ellis, as they articulate the biblical, theological, and philosophical arguments for conditionalism. These readings will give thoughtful Christians strong evidence that there are indeed compelling reasons for rethinking hell.

Book Right Now Counts Forever

Download or read book Right Now Counts Forever written by Robert Charles Sproul and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 1398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Our Christian assertion is that there is more to our lives than 'now.' If there is not then even the now is meaningless. But we say now counts. Why? Now counts because we are creatures who have an origin and a destiny which is rooted and grounded in God." --R.C. Sproul ------ There is no such thing as a meaningless moment. Since we're made in God's image and created for His eternal glory, everything we think, say, and do today matters forever. The question is, How should this truth direct our daily lives? For more than forty years, Dr. R.C. Sproul wrote his recurring column in Tabletalk magazine, Right Now Counts Forever, to apply the teachings of the Bible and Reformed theology to everyday life. No topic was off-limits because every part of our lives bears enduring significance. Through the years, Dr. Sproul helped Christians give careful thought to topics in theology and history, politics and current events, relationships and entertainment, and more. In this four-volume collection, hundreds of Dr. Sproul's columns have been brought together for the first time. Written to serve the church, this treasury of theological reflection can help guide believers of all ages to live with eternity in mind and devote all of life to the glory of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 200,000 copies sold! Chosen by God by Dr. R. C. Sproul is a contemporary classic on predestination, a doctrine that isn’t just for Calvinists. It is a doctrine for all biblical Christians. In this updated and expanded edition of Chosen by God, Sproul shows that the doctrine of predestination doesn’t create a whimsical or spiteful picture of God, but rather paints a portrait of a loving God who provides redemption for radically corrupt humans. We choose God because he has opened our eyes to see his beauty; we love him because he first loved us. There is mystery in God’s ways, but not contradiction.

Book Superheroes Can t Save You

Download or read book Superheroes Can t Save You written by Todd Miles and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comic superheroes embody the hopes of a world that is desperate for a savior. But those comic creations cannot save us from our greatest foes—sin and death. Throughout the history of the Church there have been bad ideas, misconceptions, and heretical presentations of Jesus. Each one of these heresies fails to present Jesus as the Bible reveals him. In Superheroes Can’t Save You, Todd Miles demonstrates how these ancient heresies are embodied in contemporary comic superheroes. Miles compares something everybody already knows (who the superheroes are) with what they need to know (who Jesus is), in a book that makes vitally important Christian truths understandable and applicable to a wide audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvinist theology has been debated and promoted for centuries. But is it a theology that should last? Roger Olson suggests that Calvinism, also commonly known as Reformed theology, holds an unwarranted place in our list of accepted theologies. In Against Calvinism, readers will find scholarly arguments explaining why Calvinist theology is incorrect and how it affects God’s reputation. Olson draws on a variety of sources, including Scripture, reason, tradition, and experience, to support his critique of Calvinism and the more historically rich, biblically faithful alternative theologies he proposes. Addressing what many evangelical Christians are concerned about today—so-called “new Calvinism,” a movement embraced by a generation labeled as “young, restless, Reformed” —Against Calvinism is the only book of its kind to offer objections from a non-Calvinist perspective to the current wave of Calvinism among Christian youth. As a companion to Michael Horton’s For Calvinism, readers will be able to compare contrasting perspectives and form their own opinions on the merits and weaknesses of Calvinism.

Book excerpt: Most people view works as their gift to God. The truth is that God has prepared His works for you, and it is His gift to you. It's not how you earn rewards, but how you fulfill Jesus' promise, "It's the Father's good pleasure to give you His kingdom." Once you understand that works are gifts of God's grace (or favor) toward you, then it eliminates burn-out, fear, and the pressure of success. Success is a guarantee - if you are walking in God's prepared gift for you. This is why it's important to have a good understanding of what the Bible means when speaking of predestination and election. Rather than teaching that God pre-chose who would be allowed into salvation, we'll examine the scriptures that clarify that this is an invitation of grace through faith. It's an invitation given to all, and God will not issue a call unless He fully intends to honor it. I'm confident that as you examine these scriptures without preconceived ideas, you'll gain a deeper understanding and will never look at works or predestination the same way again.Predestination is given to reveal God's plan, and these scriptures are designed to give you confidence and assurance. That's why the Bible says things like, "If you do these things, you will never stumble," and "You will bear much fruit." The one walking in God's plan by faith is guaranteed a fruitful life. Find out what it means to walk in a life filled with the joy of discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death. There has to be more to life; death just cant be the end of it all! Hope. We all keep within our souls, our hearts, and our minds a vision of a future of some kind, a resurrection, a continuation, or an opportunity to see and talk to the loved ones who preceded us. Oh how we hope! God, how we hope and pray that there is more to life than death. The ultimate symbol of hope for many on earth is the Bible. The words within its covers were used so far back in time that they just cant be without meaning. The words convey so much for our minds, our spirit, and our understanding of an everlasting future. And the understandings and consequences are forever being reviewed and taught through the works of Reformation-era biblical thinkers such as John Calvin and Martin Luther. And one of the central questions of that time was: Does predestination provide us any answers? This book has its origins in the 1960s, while the author majored in both religion and history at Ohio Wesleyan University. At the time, there was no work in the literature solely devoted to comparing and contrasting the words of John Calvin and Martin Luther in regard to their thoughts about the doctrine of predestination, nor was there an extensive bibliography devoted to this subject. The search and the passion to understand whether we live or die (from an eternal perspective) is an ongoing mental and spiritual effort for all of us.We have the Bible and we have the Koran. We have many religions and many authors have written on the subject of human existence and human destiny. The writings from hundreds and thousands of years in our past cannot be insignificant, and those writers deserve our full attention as we seek the truth of our very being. God bless.

  • Pages : 50 pages

Download or read book On Predestination written by Jacobus Arminius and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacobus Arminius (1560 -1609), the Latinized name of the Dutch theologian Jakob Hermanszoon from the Protestant Reformation period, served from 1603 as professor in theology at the University of Leiden. He wrote many books and treatises on theology, and his views became the basis of Arminianism and the Dutch Remonstrant movement. Arminius wrote that he sought to teach only those things which could be proved from the Scriptures and that tended toward edification among Christians (with the exception of Roman Catholics, with whom he said there could be no spiritual accord). His motto was reputed to be "Bona conscientia paradisus," meaning, "A good conscience is a paradise." Arminius taught of a "preventing" (or prevenient) grace that has been conferred upon all by the Holy Spirit and this grace is "sufficient for belief, in spite of our sinful corruption, and thus for salvation." Arminius stated that "the grace sufficient for salvation is conferred on the Elect, and on the Non-elect; that, if they will, they may believe or not believe, may be saved or not be saved." William Witt states that "Arminius has a very high theology of grace. He insists emphatically that grace is gratuitous because it is obtained through God's redemption in Christ, not through human effort." Arminius referred to even faith as being received from God as a gift.
