Book Violence and Police Culture

Download or read book Violence and Police Culture written by Tony Coady and published by Melbourne University Publish. This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence and policing are inevitably associated. Criminals use violence not only against innocent members of the public, but also against the police themselves. For our own protection and theirs, we have given police a licence to use force, sometimes with lethal consequences. But the exercise of this licence is fraught with risk to the community. The disturbing record of police shootings in Victoria, and irresponsible police violence elsewhere in recent years, vividly illustrate this risk. The public outcry against such events is understandable. To find a solution, we need to analyse the contexts and the cultural background of the use of police violence, and to think hard about its causes and proper limits. In Violence and Police Culture, eminent contributors offer valuable insights and experience to the growing debate. While Australian in origin and emphasis, the book addresses a public issue that resonates as far afield as London, New York, Tokyo and Belfast. Violence and Police Culture argues that there are features of police culture which foster abuse of the right to use violence. The book makes positive suggestions about institutional changes that might alleviate the problems bedevilling what the philosopher Thomas Hobbes called 'the right of the sword'.

Book Setting Relations Right in Restorative Practice

Download or read book Setting Relations Right in Restorative Practice written by David B. Moore and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting Relations Right in Restorative Practice is a practical guide to using restorative processes, both in justice systems, to provide a healing response to harm, and in broader community contexts, to help people co-exist peacefully. Restorative processes can help to establish, maintain, deepen, and repair relationships, and to neutralise the conflict associated with negative relationships. The result is less conflict within people, between people, and between groups, and increasing individual and community wellbeing. These complex goals can be distilled to the single principle of setting relations right. The authors distil lessons from their decades of work at the frontline of restorative innovation. They outline an accurate, accessible theory that informs a restorative mindset, and describe in detail the corresponding skill set. Succinct, engaging case studies include refinements to existing programs in justice systems. Other case studies include the innovations of restorative responses to institutional abuse and to family violence and sexual harm, initiatives to increase psychological safety in schools and workplaces, and programs that support restorative ways-of-working across whole cities or regions. By applying elements from successful programs, practitioners can realise the broader reforming potential of restorative practice. This book is essential reading for restorative practitioners, administrators, and policymakers, for students and researchers – indeed, for anyone interested in the power and potential of restorative practice and other forms of deliberative decision-making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual health is now seen as multi-dimensional, a product of complex interplay between biological, psychological, and socio-cultural factors. This book brings together 34 expert Australian practitioners and researchers to provide a comprehensive, authoritative, up-to-date, and stimulating perspective on sexual health. In numerous and significant ways the book differs from its predecessor-volume, published in 2005. Chapters are now grouped in to five parts: § Sexual health in Australia; § Foundations for sexual health; § Sexual health in clinical practice; § Sexual health in specific populations; and § Prevention and promotion. All original chapters have been thoroughly reviewed and updated. Six new chapters are included, on: § Sexual health in society; § Contraception, and options for unintended pregnancy; § The legal environment of sexual healthcare practice; § Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people; § Health promotion; and § Prevention strategies. Chapters on sexual health in adolescence and in older adults have been expanded. A section on refugees is now included (with sections on homeless youth, sex workers, and prisoners) in a chapter on the sexual health of ‘other vulnerable populations’. This book is one-third longer than its predecessor-volume. For tertiary-level students of nursing, medicine, public health, health promotion, and sexology, this new book will continue to be an ideal textbook. For healthcare practitioners working in reproductive health, sexual health, maternal and child health, and many other specialist fields, it will be an invaluable first reference.

Book Become a Problem Solving Crime Analyst

Download or read book Become a Problem Solving Crime Analyst written by Ronald Clarke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime analysis has become an increasingly important part of policing and crime prevention, and thousands of specialist crime analysts are now employed by police forces worldwide. This is the first book to set out the principles and practice of crime analysis, and is designed to be used both by crime analysts themselves, by those responsible for the training of crime analysts and teaching its principles, and those teaching this subject as part of broader policing and criminal justice courses. The particular focus of this book is on the adoption of a problem solving approach, showing how crime analysis can be used and developed to support a problem oriented policing approach – based on the idea that the police should concentrate on identifying patterns of crime and anticipating crimes rather than just reacting to crimes once they have been committed. In his foreword to this book, Nick Ross, presenter of BBC Crime Watch, argues passionately that crime analysts are 'the new face of policing', and have a crucial part to play in the increasingly sophisticated police response to crime and its approach to crime prevention – 'You are the brains, the expert, the specialist, the boffin.'

Book A Review of the Literature on Sexual Assault Perpetrator Characteristics and Behaviors

Download or read book A Review of the Literature on Sexual Assault Perpetrator Characteristics and Behaviors written by Sarah Michal Greathouse and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sexual assault continues to be a pervasive problem, both for society in general and within the military community. To assist the Air Force in its continued efforts to combat sexual assault within its ranks, we reviewed the existing empirical literature on the characteristics and behaviors of adult perpetrators who commit sexual assault against other adults. Our search was not limited to studies of military populations. While a vast majority of the existing literature has focused on sole male perpetrators who assault female victims, we identified some research on other types of perpetrators, including female sexual assault perpetrators, men who perpetrate assault against other men, and perpetrators who participate in group sexual assault. This body of research indicates that adult perpetrators are diverse in terms of their demographics, background characteristics, and motivations. Moreover, research indicates that sexual assault perpetration is likely influenced by a combination of factors, including an individual's developmental and family history; his or her personality, including attitudes/cognitions; and environmental factors, including peer attitudes and alcohol consumption. The complexity of factors that influence sexual assault perpetration and the multiple pathways that lead to an attack make it difficult to predict whether an individual is prone to commit sexual assault. While predicting sexual assault perpetration is problematic, we identified a number of factors related to perpetration that may be relevant for intervention efforts and offer recommendations for the Air Force"--Publisher's web site.
