Joan has spent a lifetime enduring the cruelties of men. But when one of them commits a shocking act of violence in front of her, she flees New York City in search of Alice, the only person alive who can help her make sense of her past. In the sweltering hills above Los Angeles, Joan unravels the horrific event she witnessed as a child—that has haunted her every waking moment—while forging the power to finally strike back. Animal is a depiction of female rage at its rawest, and a visceral exploration of the fallout from a male-dominated society.

Book Wolf in Cio s Clothing

Download or read book Wolf in Cio s Clothing written by Tina Nunno and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machiavellians are few in number in IT. The massive pressure on CIOs continues to increase as the opportunities to use technology in business become more prevalent and more competitive. As CIOs often find themselves at the center of business conflict, they must not only familiarize themselves with Machiavellian tactics as a defensive weapon, but also learn to use them as an offensive weapon in extreme situations so that they can increase IT's contribution to their enterprises. As Italian political philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli implied, you're either predator or prey, and the animal you most resemble determines your position on the food chain. In The Wolf in CIO's Clothing Gartner analyst and author Tina Nunno expands on Machiavelli's metaphor, examining seven animal types and the leadership attributes of each. Nunno posits the wolf -- a social animal with strong predatory instincts -- as the ideal example of how a leader can adapt and thrive. Technology may be black and white, but successful leadership demands an ability to exist in the grey. Drawing on her experience with hundreds of CIOs, Nunno charts a viable way to master the Machiavellian principles of power, manipulation, love, and war. Through compelling case studies, her approach demonstrates how CIOs and IT leaders can adjust their leadership styles in extreme situations for their own success and that of their teams.

Download or read book No Trespassing written by Leah Holder Green and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let’s talk about sex. We might as well talk about it, because it’s everywhere. Our culture continually bombards us with its way for sex in movies, television shows, music, magazines, and other media. But do you know that God has a way for sex, too? In fact, He created sex—it was His great idea! In No Trespassing: I’m God’s Property, Leah Holder proposes that God’s way is the best way. Leah first explains why we should follow God’s rules for sex. In addition to faith-based reasons, she highlights practical reasons, such as sexually transmitted diseases, unplanned pregnancies, and mental health issues. Then, Leah answers the next big question: How? Is it even possible to follow God’s way for sex when so many people don’t? With clarity, transparency, and humor, Leah presents Biblical truths and personal testimonies regarding how we can be sexually pure within this sex-crazy world. No Trespassing contains three brief sections—mind, body, and heart. Within them, Leah provides practical tips to guide us on our journeys to sexual purity. If we’re already on the sexually-pure path, we’ll be encouraged to remain on it. If we’ve departed from the sexually-pure path, or if we’ve never been on it, we’ll be reminded of God’s love and forgiveness, and we’ll be directed to the way to purity. Out of her love for God, others, and herself, Leah Holder has committed to live sexually pure. Although she falls far short of perfection, the Lord has enabled her to live in consistent victory over sexual sin. The advice she provides in No Trespassing isn’t based on a theory she heard about but on a reality she lives! After reading No Trespassing, Leah hopes you will experience the victory and freedom that she enjoys.

Book Predator

Download or read book Predator written by Ander Monson and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A searching memoir of a life lived in the flicker of an action film, by the author of I Will Take the Answer In his first memoir, Ander Monson guides readers through a scene-by-scene exploration of the 1987 film Predator, which he has watched 146 times. Some fighters might not have time to bleed, but Monson has the patience to consider their adventure, one frame at a time. He turns his obsession into a lens through which he poignantly examines his own life, formed by mainstream, white, male American culture. Between scenes, Monson delves deeply into his adolescence in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Riyadh, his role as a father and the loss of his own mother, and his friendships with men bound by the troubled camaraderie depicted in action and sci-fi blockbusters. Along with excursions into the conflicted pleasures of cosplay and first-person shooters, he imagines himself beside the poet and memoirist Paul Monette, who wrote the novelization of the movie while his partner was dying of AIDS. A sincere and playful book that lovingly dissects the film, Predator also offers questions and critiques of masculinity, fandom, and their interrelation with acts of mass violence. In a stirring reversal, one chapter exposes Monson through the Predator’s heat-seeking vision, asking him, “What do you know about the workings of the hidden world?” As Monson brings us into the brilliant depths of the film and its universe, the hunt begins.

Book Ancient Alterity in the Andes

Download or read book Ancient Alterity in the Andes written by George F. Lau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Alterity in the Andes is the first major treatment on ancient alterity: how people in the past regarded others. At least since the 1970s, alterity has been an influential concept in different fields, from art history, psychology and philosophy, to linguistics and ethnography. Having gained steam in concert with postmodernism’s emphasis on self-reflection and discourse, it is especially significant now as a framework to understand the process of ‘writing’ and understanding the Other: groups, cultures and cosmologies. This book showcases this concept by illustrating how people visualised others in the past, and how it coloured their engagements with them, both physically and cognitively. Alterity has yet to see sustained treatment in archaeology due in great part to the fact that the archaeological record is not always equipped to inform on the subject. Like its kindred concepts, such as identity and ethnicity, alterity is difficult to observe also because it can be expressed at different times and scales, from the individual, family and village settings, to contexts such as nations and empires. It can also be said to ‘reside’ just as well in objects and individuals, as it may in a technique, action or performance. One requires a relevant, holistic data set and multiple lines of evidence. Ancient Alterity in the Andes provides just that by focusing on the great achievements of the ancient Andes during the first millennium AD, centred on a Precolumbian culture, known as Recuay (AD 1-700). Using a new framework of alterity, one based on social others (e.g., kinsfolk, animals, predators, enemies, ancestral dead), the book rethinks cultural relationships with other groups, including the Moche and Nasca civilisations of Peru’s coast, the Chavín cult, and the later Wari, the first Andean empire. In revealing little known patterns in Andean prehistory the book illuminates the ways that archaeologists, in general, can examine alterity through the existing record. Ancient Alterity in the Andes is a substantial boon to the analysis and writing of past cultures, social systems and cosmologies and an important book for those wishing to understand this developing concept in archaeological theory.

She was also a little unworldly, the product of a small, rural Western Canadian community where doors were never locked and life was simple and direct. On a backpacking trip in the UK, she met the man who would become her husband. A man who everyone agreed was one of the most intelligent, charming people they had ever met. Easy to like, easy to believe. Easy to love. A man without mercy who shattered her emotionally, psychologically and financially. Decades later, Kenner Jones is at large today, having committed crimes around the world under a series of fake names and personas. He has been described—by a seasoned US immigration officer—as "the best conman I have ever encountered." No one got closer to Kenner Jones than Lee Mackenzie. In The Charming Predator, he is unmasked for the first time.

Book excerpt: The Victim's Guide to Surviving the Narcissist/Sociopath Updated and its first position 300-plus page Pre-Book is a two books-in-one book designed to assist victims of covert spousal predators and their support persons understand the reality of the covert spousal predator (i.e. the narcissist, malignant narcissist, sociopath/psychopath, dual diagnosed/dual diagnosable, narcopath). This material delves into the worst case scenario possible for the spousal victim as well as common red flags, exploitation, strip-mining, predatory take-ALL agenda and abuse patterns perpetrated by the covert spousal predator in his/her hunting prime and afterward when the predator decompensates. Many valuable references are provided throughout this book for further education/research and understanding. Readers are strongly encouraged to continue their review of material created by all of the referenced educators and authors listed in this book. Moreover, the top mistakes made by victims, support persons for victims, professionals, law enforcement and others are detailed in the hopes that readers will avoid making as many of these errors as they face various scenarios with the predator or predators in their lives or in the lives of others they are attempting to assist. For spousal victims in the worst case scenario with an empowered/aided and abetted covert spousal predator (i.e. situations where common minor children are involved) this book covers topics typically not touched in the material of others. This book is not about overt spousal predators (i.e. abusers whose victims can effectively use the system and/or domestic violence shelter assistance to flee) though overt predators perpetrate many of the same abuse patterns minus the skill of becoming aided and abetted via abuse by proxy scams, which are commonly the mainstay of the covert predator's take-ALL agenda.

Book excerpt: You've seen the news reports on TV. Grown men show up for sexual encounters with children and young teenagers-after "meeting" them on Internet Web sites or chat rooms. The kids don't understand the risks they're taking. But the grown men do. They live for the sleazy meetings, spending hours...or weeks...arranging the details. They are sexual predators. Parents, guardians and family members worry about how to protect their kids from these people. But the popularity of the Internet makes that protection difficult. Online safety isn't black and white. Bad people can use legitimate Web sites to recruit or "groom" victims; and the predators lie so smoothly that the kids don't realize what's happening until it's too late. This book uses actual transcripts from undercover investigations of sexual predators to give you practical knowledge of how these villains operate. It follows the experiences of real people-real children-so that you know what to look for in a child or an Internet "friend" to cut off "chats" before they lead to abuse. Book jacket.
