Book Evaluating Measurement Accuracy

Download or read book Evaluating Measurement Accuracy written by Semyon G Rabinovich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Evaluating Measurement Accuracy, 2nd Edition” is intended for those who are concerned with measurements in any field of science or technology. It reflects the latest developments in metrology and offers new results, but is designed to be accessible to readers at different levels: scientists who advance the field of metrology, engineers and experimental scientists who use measurements as tool in their professions, students and graduate students in natural sciences and engineering, and, in parts describing practical recommendations, technicians performing mass measurements in industry, quality control, and trade. This book presents material from the practical perspective and offers solutions and recommendations for problems that arise in conducting real-life measurements. This new edition adds a method for estimating accuracy of indirect measurements with independent arguments, whose development Dr. Rabinovich was able to complete very recently. This method, which is called the Method of Enumeration, produces estimates that are no longer approximate, similar to the way the method of reduction described in the first edition removed approximation in estimating uncertainty of indirect measurements with dependent arguments. The method of enumeration completes addressing the range of problems whose solutions signify the emergence of the new theory of accuracy of measurements. A new method is added for building a composition of histograms, and this method forms a theoretical basis for the method of enumeration.Additionally, as a companion to this book, a concise practical guide that assembles simple step-by-step procedures for typical tasks the practitioners are likely to encounter in measurement accuracy estimation is available at SpringerLink.

Book The Values of Precision

    Book Details:
  • Author : M. Norton Wise
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2020-09-01
  • ISBN : 0691218129
  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book The Values of Precision written by M. Norton Wise and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Values of Precision examines how exactitude has come to occupy such a prominent place in Western culture. What has been the value of numerical values? Beginning with the late eighteenth century and continuing into the twentieth, the essays in this volume support the view that centralizing states--with their increasingly widespread bureaucracies for managing trade, taxation, and armies--and large-scale commercial enterprises--with their requirements for standardization and mass production--have been the major promoters of numerical precision. Taking advantage of the resources available, scientists and engineers have entered a symbiotic relationship with state and industry, which in turn has led to increasingly refined measures in ever-widening domains of the natural and social world. At the heart of this book, therefore, is an inquiry into the capacity of numbers and instruments to travel across boundaries of culture and materials. Many of the papers focus attention on disagreements about the significance and the credibility of particular sorts of measurements deployed to support particular claims, as in the measures of the population of France, the electrical resistance of copper, or the solvency of insurance companies. At the same time they display the deeply cultural character of precision values. Contributors to the volume include Ken Alder, Graeme J. N. Gooday, Jan Golinski, Frederic L. Holmes, Kathryn M. Olesko, Theodore M. Porter, Andrea Rusnock, Simon Schaffer, George Sweetnam, Andrew Warwick, and M. Norton Wise.

Book Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy

Download or read book Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy written by Wayne and published by . This book was released on 1971-05-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his introduction to this book, George R. Harrison, Dean Emeritus of M.I.T.'s School of Science, writes as follows: "Basic to man's behavior is his ability to determine, modify, and adapt to his environment. This he has been able to do in proportion to his skill at making measurements, and fundamental to all other measuring operations is his ability to determine locations in the material world. Thus the science of mechanical measurements is a fundamental one. It is this science, and the art which accompanies and informs it, with which this book is concerned." This is the third book produced by the , Inc., of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Like all of its products, the book is marked by a clean precision of design and execution. The firm has built a worldwide reputation since 1924, both as a manufacturer of special tooling to extremely close accuracies and of machine tools that make possible a very high degree of precision. Wayne R. Moore has assembled in the 350 pages of Foundations of Mechanical Accuracythe company's intimate knowledge of and experience with mechanical accuracy, and how to achieve it. He has illustrated his text with over 500 original photographs and drawings. This book tells how to attain precision in manufacturing to millionths of an inch and how to control such precision by appropriate measuring techniques. The book is divided into four main sections: geometry, standards of length, dividing the circle, and roundness. A fifth section covers "Universal Measuring Machine Techniques and Applications." The book is printed in two colors throughout, and interspersed with full-page, full-color plates.

Book Optical Coatings and Thermal Noise in Precision Measurement

Download or read book Optical Coatings and Thermal Noise in Precision Measurement written by Gregory Harry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-12 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal noise from optical coatings is a growing area of concern and overcoming limits to the sensitivity of high precision measurements by thermal noise is one of the greatest challenges faced by experimental physicists. In this timely book, internationally renowned scientists and engineers examine our current theoretical and experimental understanding. Beginning with the theory of thermal noise in mirrors and substrates, subsequent chapters discuss the technology of depositing coatings and state-of-the-art dielectric coating techniques used in precision measurement. Applications and remedies for noise reduction are also covered. Individual chapters are dedicated to specific fields where coating thermal noise is a particular concern, including the areas of quantum optics/optomechanics, gravitational wave detection, precision timing, high-precision laser stabilisation via optical cavities and cavity quantum electrodynamics. While providing full mathematical detail, the text avoids field-specific jargon, making it a valuable resource for readers with varied backgrounds in modern optics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing, reduced to its simplest form, involves the sequencing of product forms through a number of different processes. Each individual step, known as an unit manufacturing process, can be viewed as the fundamental building block of a nation's manufacturing capability. A committee of the National Research Council has prepared a report to help define national priorities for research in unit processes. It contains an organizing framework for unit process families, criteria for determining the criticality of a process or manufacturing technology, examples of research opportunities, and a prioritized list of enabling technologies that can lead to the manufacture of products of superior quality at competitive costs. The study was performed under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation and the Defense Department's Manufacturing Technology Program.
