Book excerpt: Her babies were dying-one by one. Who would believe a mother would cold-bloodedly kill her two-week-old baby? That was why the law had to accept Paula Sims' story of a masked kidnapper. Then it happened again. Three and a half years later, Paula said she had lost another newborn to an intruder. But this time the police would not stop searching until they discovered the whole horrifying truth. This is the full, uncensored and terrifying story of twisted sexuality and hideous hate seething below the surface of a seemingly normal family ... and of the massive investigation and nerve-shattering trial that made the unthinkable undeniable. Written by the state's attorney who won the case against cruel odds and the reporter who covered it from the shocking start to suspenseful climax, Precious Victims is a riveting and chilling journey into the twisted heart of a family with a dark and murderous secret.

Book Complex Political Victims

Download or read book Complex Political Victims written by Erica Bouris and published by Kumarian Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Reframes major events like South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Holocaust, and the war in Bosnia to take into account the "complex victim" * Calls for a more effective and encompassing support of all types of victims, especially those not typically recognized as such Images of the political victim are powerful, gripping, and integral in helping us makes sense of conflict, particularly in making moral calculations, determining who is "good" and who is "evil". These images, and the discourse of victimization that surrounds them, inform the international community when deciding to recognize certain individuals as victims and play a role in shaping response policies. These policies in turn create the potential for long term, stable peace after episodes of political victimization. Bouris finds weighty problems with this dichotomous conception of actors in a conflict, which pervades much of contemporary peacebuilding scholarship. She instead argues that victims, much like the conflicts themselves, are complex. Rather than use this complexity as a way to dismiss victims or call for limits on the response from the international community, the book advocates for greater and more effective responses to conflict.

Book The Victims of Slavery Colonization and the Holocaust

Download or read book The Victims of Slavery Colonization and the Holocaust written by Kitty Millet and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a sophisticated investigation into the experience of being exterminated, as felt by victims of the Holocaust, and compares and contrasts this analysis with the experiences of people who have been colonized or enslaved. Using numerous victim accounts and a wide range of primary sources, the book moves away from the 'continuity thesis', with its insistence on colonial intent as the reason for victimization in relation to other historical examples of mass political violence, to look at the victim experience on its own terms. By affording each constituent case study its own distinctive aspects, The Victims of Slavery, Colonization and the Holocaust allows for a more enriching comparison of victim experience to be made that respects each group of victims in their uniqueness. It is an important, innovative volume for all students of the Holocaust, genocide and the history of mass political violence.

Book Finding Again the World

Download or read book Finding Again the World written by John Metcalf and published by Biblioasis. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding Again the World brings together a dozen of the best stories by John Metcalf, a modern master of the form. Spanning more than fifty years and ranging from some of his earliest published stories, such as “Dandelions” and “The Eastmill Reception Centre,” to his latest, with “Ceazer Salad” and “The Museum at the End of the World,” this current gathering shows a writer whose voice, at every stage of his career, is unmistakeable. These are elegant and brilliantly charged fictions, entertaining and moving and mischievous: taking the dross and straw of everyday life and transforming it, through some sort of alchemical process of sensibility, into art. With an introduction by Keath Fraser, Finding Again the World is a landmark collection, a sumptuous gathering of singular work: these are stories that will last.

Book excerpt: Pomp, circumstance, and murder mark the graduation ceremony at Marcus Rome State University. Famed philanthropist and commencement speaker, Douglas Norwood, lies dead. There is no apparent motive. A cryptic message to a local television station provides many questions but few answers. Sergeant Tom Warren and the campus police are faced with the grim task of untangling the mess. University President Norman Mulholland wants a solution fast, and appoints mathematics professor Jim Albright to serve as liaison between him and the police. In an unconventional move, Warren and Albright enlist a group of amateur sleuths composed of Albright's sexy psychologist wife, Donna; eccentric mathematical genius Elmo Sherwin and his wife, Michelle; and Mulholland himself to work with Warren. With the exception of the president, this is the same group that pinpointed another campus murderer three years earlier (see Math Is Murder). The team soon learns the crime is more complicated than it first appeared, and watches with growing anxiety as the university's situation deteriorates. Will they be able to solve this mystery in time to prevent more carnage? The clues in this whodunit are everywhere. It's up to the investigative team and the reader to find them. The problem is recognizing them.
