Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Precious Stones in Nature, Art, and Literature In the preparation of the work on "Precious Stones," use has been made of all the assistance within reach of the author obtained from writers expressly discoursing upon this topic, from general literature, and from works exclusively scientific. The subject covers a wide field, and is one about which, on some points, there is considerable difference of opinion; therefore, the difficulty of arriving at the truth is much greater than where there is more concurrence of views, and more agreement in the statements of what are claimed to be historical facts. Very few American works on precious stones exist, and those that have been published are generally limited in the number of species described; while nothing, or only very meagre accounts have been given to American gems by foreign authors. The most complete list of native gems is by Mr. George F. Kunz, mineralogist and gem-expert, employed by Messrs. Tiffany and Company, New York, published in the United States Geological Surveys, under the superintendence of Mr. Albert Williams, Jr. The author very gratefully acknowledges the assistance generously offered by Mr. Kunz, who examined parts of the manuscript, and suggested several improvements, more especially in the scientific and practical portions of the work. Sought for at times and then again neglected for other gems, causing a sensible difference in the value of these stones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Precious Stones: For Jewelers and the Gem-Loving Public In planning and in writing the book, every effort has been made to teach the fundamental principles and methods in use for identifying precious stones, in as natural an order as pos sible. This has been done in the belief that the necessary information will thus be much more readily acquired by the busy gem merchant or jeweler than would have been the case had the material been arranged in the usual sys tematic order. The latter is of advantage for quick reference after the fundamentals of the subject have been mastered. It is hoped. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diamonds, Pearls and Precious Stones: Where They Are Found, How Cut, and Made Ready for Use in the Jeweler's Art, Their Composition and Value The purpose Of this book has been primarily to give assistance to the employees of the Smith Patterson Company in understanding more fully the diamond, pearl, and colored gem business by giving them, in a condensed and accurate form, information that the writer con siders useful. Although he is aware that many larger works already exist which cover the field in a most excellent and comprehensive manner, yet from the very fact that there is such an excellent body of gem literature, it is often hard to obtain a concise and accurate idea of the most interesting points in this field Without the labor of extensive study. The object of the writer has been to present the most important facts concerning the nature of diamonds, pearls, and other gems, and the most interesting aspects in the work of discover ing and cutting or preparing gems for the arts, and to give such facts as will be of interest not only to the man in the business, but also to many admirers of precious stones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems Gems in their appeal are like the stars. They enchant the eye, they stir the imagination. Then, as with cats and clocks, they are "company." A valuable stone is the one thing that endures. Lace is soon a rag, velvet impossible, flowers dead; but a jewel, if treated kindly, lives forever. It is indeed almost as indestructible as truth or a mighty love. The very word evokes a picture. Is there a richer syllable than "gem"? With the jeweler it means the finest of its kind. But the scholars say a gem, whether of emerald or quartz, is not a gem unless engraved. Other times, other manners. These days the art of gem engraving scarcely exists, while precious stones are everywhere. Before a fine specimen, "gem" leaps to the lips involuntarily. It is suggested that the business classification be known as gemology in distinction from the mineralogy of science. Treatises on gems, comparatively few, difficult of access, generally reference books, are often tough reading. The scientist may be great and useful, but for the neophyte he has scant regard. It seemed as if a small volume, depicting in simple words the salient features of precious stones, garnering from the huge harvest of research the easily assimilable, might not come amiss. If we cannot know all, let us at least grasp something from that vast world of interesting facts to which so many women who wear jewels and men who buy and sell them seem indifferent. Gems have many sides, and even laymen may attain a few. Nothing is more bewildering to the beginner than the manner in which the various mineral families masquerade in one another's clothing. It would be no trick at all were the garnet always red, the sapphire always blue, the topaz always yellow, as at first we suppose. Nature seems positively to enjoy playing pranks which turn all preconceived notions topsy-turvy. Increasing experience confers that sixth sense which gradually distinguishes one family from another. Yet even experts, to be absolutely sure, must sometimes resort to scientific tests. These are the triumphs of modem times over the simple file of the ancients. Now, hardness, specific gravity, refraction, dispersion, dichroicism, by means of delicate and often inexpensive instruments, can precisely be determined. To own a few good stones is an education. Like pictures, their qualities come out only in close association. A judiciously purchased collection may prove a good investment. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gem-Stones and Their Distinctive Characters Eauty, durability, and rarity: such are the three cardinal Virtues of a perfect gem-stone. Stones lacking any Of them cannot aspire to a high place in the ranks Of precious stones, although it does not necessarily follow that they are of no use for ornamental purposes. The case of pearl, which, though not properly included among gem-stones, being directly produced by living agency, yet holds an honoured place in jewellery, constitutes to some extent an exception, since its incontestable beauty atones for its comparative want Of durability. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Precious Stones: A Book of Reference for Jewellers The difference between an Oriental and a quartz cat's-eye is unmistakable after the first introduction: the texture of the Oriental appears finer, the colors softer, the lustre harder. The green of the emerald is not approached by any other stone, though there are some remarkable imitations made. The doublet imitations Of this stone are not good; the color is dark and murky. Book Gems and Precious Stones

Download or read book Gems and Precious Stones written by Henry G. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems and Precious Stones: With Descriptions of Their Distinctive Properties; The Methods for Determining Them, &C In the preparation of the following notes on "Gems and Precious Stones" for re-publication, in a form more suited to the requirements of the general public, it has been recognised that many who feel an interest in these useful and valuable minerals may have had but little scientific training, and whose knowledge of gems only extends to those cut and polished specimens used in articles of adornment. The endeavour has, therefore, been made to simplify the information, by ignoring scientific expressions and highly technical terms as much as possible, but where the use of these was unavoidable, explanatory notes have been added to elucidate their meaning. It may be well to mention that the natural minerals have but little resemblance to the finished gems as prepared for sale, and while an attempt has been made to convey the meaning and appearance of simple crystalline forms in the four principal systems, it must be understood that it is seldom that the natural crystals are perfect in form, or regular in appearance. This might tend to mislead one little acquainted with the laws that govern form in minerals, although a little consideration would enable one to place a crystallized specimen in its proper system; the diamond, the zircon, and the sapphire for instance, could not be mistaken for each other when found crystallized, although, perhaps, identical in colour. In water-worn specimens, of course, other tests have to be applied, these are fully described in the following pages, and the differences pointed out between gems resembling each other in some respects. The methods adopted in determining the physical properties of minerals are also fully explained. It has been attempted, by introducing well authenticated historical facts, to enliven an otherwise rather dry subject with interesting narrative, much of which has been obtained from the information collected and published by Messrs. Streeter, Emanuel, King, Dieulafait, Kunz, Burnham, and others. To the authors of these works my obligations are due. While endeavouring to make the information of some educational value, it must be understood that no attempt has been made to write for those who are already scientifically acquainted with the subject, as they are well provided for by very many works of reference.
