Book excerpt: A feel-good, comprehensive exploration of the profound bond between humans and dogs from Jen Golbeck, the “internet’s dog mom” behind the massive social media platform The Golden Ratio, and Stacey Colino, an award-winning science writer. Dogs have been considered people’s best friend for thousands of years, but never has the relationship between humans and their canine companions been as vitally important as it is today. With all of the seismic shifts in today’s world, rates of anxiety and depression have been skyrocketing, and people have been turning to their dogs for solace and stability. Amidst these dire realities, something wonderful has taken shape. In the United States alone, dog adoptions doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic. As people have brought furry friends into their lives for the first time or seized this opportunity to deepen the connections they already have, they are looking to understand how owning a dog can change their lives. Now, The Purest Bond explores the benefits our dogs can have on our physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being, often without our realizing it. Weaving together groundbreaking research and touching real-life stories, The Purest Bond explores not just the social benefits of owning a dog but the science of how dogs improve our emotional and physical health, mental acuity, and our ability to focus and absorb information. Most importantly, they remind us of what’s right in the world—love, trust, affection, playtime, fresh air, and sunshine—even when so much feels wrong.

Barkwater is a caring, pet-friendly community with bunches of bulldogs, Boston terriers, and bloodhounds. But there's only one Blue Smoker. Booter Pooter, son of the former Blue Smoker, Super Pooter, has a dog-given gift inherited from his father-the uncanny ability to clear any room with his super stinky stench. Following a freak farting fiasco, Booter is officially declared the Blue Smoker, and Super Pooter's stinky successor seeks to successfully smoke out any and all evil in Barkwater Village.

Instead, her mother Harriet wants to showcase her chiweenie-chihuahua-dachshund Streetman in the Precious Pooches Holiday Extravaganza costume events. But things quickly turn an awful shade of green when Streetman uncovers a dead body under a tarp-covered grill in the neighbor’s yard. The victim is Cameron Tully, a seafood distributor working out of Phoenix, who died from ingesting a toxic sago palm leaf. Before the police can even find a motive and suspect, another Precious Pooch owner nearly dies from the same poison. With Harriet believing someone’s targeting her and Streetman because of the costume contests, Phee will need a potful of Irish luck to sniff out a killer . . . "We're like a religious cult." --Or where will you learn Izzy Stradlin's (of Guns N' Roses) deep thoughts on the virtues of vomiting out of a bus going sixty-five miles an hour? --And how live octopuses end up in a bathtub with Led Zepplin's female playmates? Whether you're a Metallica or Madonna fan, you'll get plenty of jaw-dropping facts and anecdotes, along with biographical and career highlights of over eighty-eight raunchy rock 'n' rollers. Book Precious Pooches Dog Coloring Book

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Edward Hargreaves
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2016-05-04
  • ISBN : 9781533089625
  • Pages : 102 pages

Download or read book Precious Pooches Dog Coloring Book written by Richard Edward Hargreaves and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-05-04 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:  This is Ironpower Publishing's first volume of Precious Pooches Dog coloring books. This is the first in a series, and has been designed to give coloring pleasure for both kids and adults alike. If you love both dogs and coloring, then this is the right book for you. Some of the dog breeds included in the book are Alaskan Malamute, Beagle, Bichon, Bull Dog, Burnese Mountain Dog, Cavalier Spaniel, Chihuahua, Chow Chow, Cocker Spaniel, Corgi, Dachshund, English Sheep Dog, French Mastiff, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Labrador, Maltese, Mongrel Dachshund Yorkshire, Poodle, Pug, Rottweiler, Schnauzer, Shih Tzu and more. Both puppies and older dogs are included.  We have used an advanced hybrid effect, where the line drawings for coloring have been enhanced with subtle shading and tones. This provides depth to the images, and makes realistic coloring more easily achieved. It is suitable for both children and adults because young children may choose to disregard the tonal guide outlines, and just color to the traditional solid lines used in normal coloring books; whereas adults may choose to adopt a much more advanced coloring style, by using the tonal shading as a guide to where to create color gradations and variations. In this way we hope to satisfy the coloring needs of both the very young, and not so young.  All the line drawings in the book have been rendered from our Precious Pooches volume 1 colored photo images book. All 46 images in this volume have been printed on one side of the paper only, for the best coloring experience. Doing this minimizes the chances of colors bleeding through pages and spoiling other images.  Photocopying of the images for personal use is allowed, so you can color the images multiple times if you so desire. This is good if you wish to frame your colored images into your own unique works of art, without pulling this book apart, or if you just want to have a practice before coloring directly into the book.  For the coloring medium, most colorists will prefer using colored pencils, but there are many other great mediums, such as pastels and crayons. So use whichever you prefer, and let your artistic talents shine! We hope you enjoy coloring these images as much as we enjoyed creating them :)

Book The 60 000 Dog

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lauren Slater
  • Publisher : Beacon Press
  • Release : 2012-11-20
  • ISBN : 0807001872
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book The 60 000 Dog written by Lauren Slater and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning new book about the role of animals in our lives, by a popular and acclaimed writer From the time she is nine years old, biking to the farmland outside her suburban home, where she discovers a disquieting world of sleeping cows and a “Private Way” full of the wondrous and creepy creatures of the wild—spiders, deer, moles, chipmunks, and foxes—Lauren Slater finds in animals a refuge from her troubled life. As she matures, her attraction to animals strengthens and grows more complex and compelling even as her family is falling to pieces around her. Slater spends a summer at horse camp, where she witnesses the alternating horrific and loving behavior of her instructor toward the animals in her charge and comes to question the bond that so often develops between females and their equines. Slater’s questions follow her to a foster family, her own parents no longer able to care for her. A pet raccoon, rescued from a hole in the wall, teaches her how to feel at home away from home. The two Shiba Inu puppies Slater adopts years later, against her husband’s will, grow increasingly important to her as she ages and her family begins to grow. Slater’s husband is a born skeptic and possesses a sternly scientific view of animals as unconscious, primitive creatures, one who insists “that an animal’s worth is roughly equivalent to its edibility.” As one of her dogs, Lila, goes blind and the medical bills and monthly expenses begin to pour in, he calculates the financial burden of their canine family member and finds that Lila has cost them about $60,000, not to mention the approximately 400 pounds of feces she has deposited in their yard. But when Benjamin begins to suffer from chronic pain, Lauren is convinced it is Lila’s resilience and the dog’s quick adaptation to her blindness that draws her husband out of his own misery and motivates him to try to adjust to his situation. Ben never becomes a true believer or a die-hard animal lover, but his story and the stories Lauren tells of her own bond with animals convince her that our connections with the furry, the four-legged, the exoskeleton-ed, or the winged may be just as priceless as our human relationships. The $60,000 Dog is Lauren Slater’s intimate manifesto on the unique, invaluable, and often essential contributions animals make to our lives. As a psychologist, a reporter, an amateur naturalist, and above all an enormously gifted writer, she draws us into the stories of her passion for animals that are so much more than pets. She describes her intense love for the animals in her life without apology and argues, finally, that the works of Darwin and other evolutionary biologists prove that, when it comes to worth, animals are equal, and in some senses even superior, to human beings.
