This book collects and compiles over 3,000 entries of the commonly used ones and presents them with their English translations for English-speaking students learning Cantonese. Besides listing the expression in Chinese characters with its literal translation in English, each entry also contains its phonetic transcription in the Yale Romanization System, and a description of its meaning and sometimes its origin. The entries are arranged alphabetically according following the Yale Romanization System, and for ease of reference, an index by the strokes of the Chinese characters of the expressions is included. There is also an elaborate description of the Yale Romanization System.

Book How Societies Work 5th Edition

Download or read book How Societies Work 5th Edition written by Joanne Naiman and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-28T00:00:00Z with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011, protesters around the world – including Canada – called for changes to the societies in which they live. Many observers were asking: “What do they want?” Some answers to this question can be found in How Societies Work, a unique and accessible introductory sociology textbook that introduces students to the structure of contemporary societies and the power relationships within them. In contrast to most introductory textbooks, How Societies Work explores a broad range of sociological concepts and theories while simultaneously creating a coherent picture of modern societies. Drawing on fields as diverse as anthropology, genetics, economics, social psychology, history and politics, this innovative and popular text looks at both the roots of modern societies and the current structures within them. This approach helps undergraduate students make sense of our complex social world and encourages them to connect the social world to their own lived experiences. This extensively revised and updated fifth edition includes discussions of the roots of the recent global economic crisis and worldwide responses to it, growing social inequality, broader global struggles for change, the growth of the security state in Canada and the sudden resurgence of political protest in North America. The final chapter looks to the future, examining such issues as the possible consequences of climate change, increased forced migration of peoples and the changing dynamic of global power. More boxes, quotes and “think about it” elements have been added to the fifth edition, while the language, clarity of presentation and many examples make it even more accessible to readers. It is an introductory textbook that truly engages students in the “sociological imagination.” This fifth edition is presented in a large format, making it easier to read and even more student friendly. A testbank and power point presentation are available for instructors upon request.

Book Three Big Pigs and the Words of Life

Download or read book Three Big Pigs and the Words of Life written by Ann Kegley and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of us has the right of choice, whether we know it or not. Our choice, however, is typically predetermined by the nature of our heart. Inevitably, our life will reveal the consequences of our choices. Three Big Pigs and the Words of Life is a combined allegory of the classic childhood story,, and the renowned teaching of Jesus, "The Parable of the Sower." Each big pig's life depicts the nature of the individuals Jesus described, the choice each made toward the Words of Life, and the consequences of their choice. Wolfe represents the surreptitious nature of the enemy of life, whose only aim is to kill, steal, and destroy. From this story, the significance of the choice we make toward the Word of God is revealed.

Download or read book Rights in the Law written by James E. Bruce and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2013-09-18 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James E. Bruce explores the relationship between morality and God's free choices in the thought of Francis Turretin (1623–1687). The first book-length treatment of Turretin's natural law theory, Rights in the Law provides an important theological backdrop to Early Modern moral and political philosophy. Turretin affirms Thomas Aquinas's approach to the natural law, calling it the common opinion of the Reformed orthodox, but he develops it, too, by introducing a threefold scheme of right (ius)—divine, natural, and positive—to explain how change within the law is possible. For example, God can change the specific day for Sabbath observance from Saturday to Sunday—from positive right—without changing the natural law precept that finite creatures ought to rest. Yet even with respect to the natural law God is still free. God can make a world in which there is no such thing as murder: he can choose not to make a world that contains such a thing as man. What God cannot do is make a murderable man. So God's free choices determine the natural law insofar as the natural law is constituted by the nature of the things that God has chosen to create.
