Book excerpt: Precast concrete pavement (PCP) technology is gaining wider acceptance in the U.S. for rapid repair and rehabilitation of concrete pavements, as well as for reconstruction of heavily trafficked asphalt concrete intersections. Widespread use in the U.S. is fairly recent, with most projects in service less than about 14 years. Nonetheless, dozens of projects have been constructed, and advances continue to be made in all aspects of the technology, including panel design, fabrication, and installation. PCP technology is being used for intermittent repairs (both full-depth repairs and full panel replacement) and for continuous applications (longer-length/wider-area rehabilitation) with service life expectations of at least 20 years for repairs and at least 40 years for continuous applications, without significant future corrective treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 2005, precast concrete pavement panels were installed during a trunk highway pavement rehabilitation project in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The panels were installed to evaluate the use of precast panels toward reducing construction time. Since it was the first precast concrete pavement panel project to be installed in Minnesota, it was deemed important to monitor the early and long-term performance of the system. This report describes the general condition of the precast pavement system after 1.5 years of service. The report also presents results from non-destructive testing conducted both immediately following construction and after one year of service. Finally, the report describes the condition of typical concrete pavement rehabilitation repairs conducted adjacent to the installed panels. A visual distress survey after 1.5 years of service revealed virtually no distress for both the precast panel sections and nearby conventional concrete pavement rehabilitation repairs. The ride quality of both the precast and conventional repair sections at 10 months of service was very smooth, with an International Roughness Index (IRI) value of approximately 50 inches per mile. The load transfer efficiencies of the precast panel joints were found to be over 90 percent after 1 year of service.

Book excerpt: The use of precast slabs as an alternative to conventional cast-in-place repairs may be an effective means of reducing construction time, thereby minimizing user delay and travel costs while obtaining a long-lasting, durable repair. This report summarizes the 3-year study, "Field Trials of Concrete Pavement Product and Process Technology--Precast Concrete System for Rapid Repairs," in which precast slabs were used for joint repair and slab replacement on in-service Michigan and Colorado highways. Cast-in-place, full-depth patches were installed as controls. The report contains a summary of the relevant literature; summaries of the field trials and their findings regarding efficiency and durability; recommendations for precast panel installation; a sample distress documentation report; a presentation of construction guidelines; and a sample special provision specification developed as part of the study. Recommendations for consecutive slab repairs are to reduce slab length; use a slab thickness of 200 mm or greater; use dowels to connect precast panels to existing panels for joint flexibility and load transfer; maximize proximity of repair sections when planning and encourage multitasking during panel installation to reduce construction time. For isolated repairs it is recommended that four dowel bars be placed in the wheel path and provide an expansion cap at one end of the dowel bar to accommodate slab movement due to environmental loading and prevent closing of the joint.

Book excerpt: Highway agencies continuously strive to expedite pavement construction and repairs and to evaluate materials and methods to provide long-lasting pavements. As part of this effort, agencies have used precast concrete slabs for more than 10 years with successive improvements in processes and systems. The Virginia Department of Transportation recently used two precast systems along with conventional cast-in-place repairs on a section of jointed reinforced concrete pavementon I-66 near Washington, D. C. One precast system, precast concrete pavement (PCP), used doweled joints. The other precast system, prestressed precast concrete pavement (PPCP), used transversely prestressed slabs post-tensioned in the longitudinal direction. Both precast systems are performing satisfactorily after 1.5 years of traffic, and the contractor was satisfied with the constructability. In multiple locations, transverse expansion joints in in PPCP were observed to be wider than the 1/2 -in widthspecified; excessively wide joints often compromise joint sealant performance, and erosion from water flowing through such joints may result in eventual loss of support over time. There were a few cracks in the PCCP section, originating mainly from grouting holes, cracks in the block-out patches, cracks and loss of epoxy at lifting hook holes, and corner breaks. There were some mid-slab cracks in the PCP slabs immediately after opening to traffic, but they are still tight and stable after 1.5 years of traffic. Even though the precast slabs initially cost more than the cast-in-place repairs to construct, the ability to construct the pavement within a short period of lane closure per day and the probability of improved quality control of plant-cast concrete warrant their use. Since this was the first application in Virginia, certain issues occurred and most were overcome, such as matching of slabs and grout leakage. The project was successfully completed and further implementation is recommended.

The technology is gaining wider acceptance in the U.S. for rapid repair and rehabilitation of concrete pavements as well as for heavily trafficked asphalt concrete pavements and intersections. Several U.S. highway agencies, including Caltrans, Illinois Tollway, and the New Jersey, New York, and Utah State Departments of Transportation, have implemented the PCP technology, and other agencies have constructed demonstration projects. In the U.S., the PCP technology is being used on concrete pavements for intermittent repairs (full-depth joint repairs or full panel replacement) and for continuous applications (longer length/wider area rehabilitation) with service life expectations of at least 20 years for intermittent repairs and at least 40 years for continuous applications, without significant future corrective treatment. The use of PCP on asphalt pavements includes the replacement of ramps, intersections and bus pads. The Strategic Highway Research Program 2 (SHRP2) Project R05 was conducted from 2008 to 2012 to develop technical information and guidelines that would encourage the rapid and successful adoption of PCP technology. In 2013, the SHRP2 Implementation Assistance Program (IAP) was created to help State DOTs, metropolitan planning organizations, and other interested organizations deploy SHRP2-developed products to deliver more efficient, costeffective solutions to meet the complex challenges facing transportation agencies. On March 28, 2014, the Federal Highway Administration—in partnership with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials—announced the selection of several transportation agencies receiving implementation and technical assistance awards as part of round 3 of the SHRP2 IAP. The Texas Department of Transportation, one of the agencies selected as a lead adopter of Project R05 technology, received an award of 300,000 [dollars] to help offset the cost of constructing a PCP project. This case study report provides details of the 2016 PCP use for rehabilitation of a distressed asphalt concrete pavement at the intersection of Route 97 and Route 72 in McMullen/LaSalle County, Texas.
