Book Prebiotic Chemistry and Chemical Evolution of Nucleic Acids

Download or read book Prebiotic Chemistry and Chemical Evolution of Nucleic Acids written by César Menor-Salván and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of life is one of the biggest unsolved scientific questions. This book deals with the formation and first steps of the chemical evolution of nucleic acids, including the chemical roots behind the origin of their components from the simplest sources in a geochemical context. Chemical evolution encompasses the chemical processes and interactions conducive to self-assembly and supramolecular organization, leading to an increase of complexity and the emergence of life. The book starts with a personal account of the pioneering work of Stanley Miller and Jeffrey Bada on the Chemistry of Origins of Life and how the development of organic chemistry beginning in the 19th century led to the emergence of the field of prebiotic chemistry, situated at the frontier between organic, geo- and biochemistry. It then continues reviewing in tutorial manner current central topics regarding the organization of nucleic acids: the origin of nucleobases and nucleosides, their phosphorylation and polymerization and ultimately, their self-assembly and supramolecular organization at the inception of life.

Book Chemical Evolution and the Origin of Life

Download or read book Chemical Evolution and the Origin of Life written by Horst Rauchfuss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did life begin on the early Earth? We know that life today is driven by the universal laws of chemistry and physics. By applying these laws over the past ?fty years, en- mous progress has been made in understanding the molecular mechanisms that are the foundations of the living state. For instance, just a decade ago, the ?rst human genome was published, all three billion base pairs. Using X-ray diffraction data from crystals, we can see how an enzyme molecule or a photosynthetic reaction center steps through its catalytic function. We can even visualize a ribosome, central to all life, translate - netic information into a protein. And we are just beginning to understand how molecular interactions regulate thousands of simultaneous reactions that continuously occur even in the simplest forms of life. New words have appeared that give a sense of this wealth of knowledge: The genome, the proteome, the metabolome, the interactome. But we can’t be too smug. We must avoid the mistake of the physicist who, as the twentieth century began, stated con?dently that we knew all there was to know about physics, that science just needed to clean up a few dusty corners. Then came relativity, quantum theory, the Big Bang, and now dark matter, dark energy and string theory. Similarly in the life sciences, the more we learn, the better we understand how little we really know. There remains a vast landscape to explore, with great questions remaining.

Book Prebiotic chemistry and the origin of life

Download or read book Prebiotic chemistry and the origin of life written by Giovanni Occhipinti and published by Youcanprint. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born from twenty-five years of experimental research and a decade of bibliographic studies, this publication delves into the fascinating theory of life's abiotic origins. It begins with simple amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, revealing how these compounds, present from the prebiotic era and discovered in ancient meteorites, may have been pivotal in life's evolutionary journey. Focusing particularly on amino acids' chirality—that is, their existence in mirror-image right and left forms—the author probes the critical enigma of their separation and why the left (L) form dominates in all known living beings. The book sparks a compelling discussion about how this bifurcation might have occurred at life's very inception and the ultimate fate of the right form. The text further extends its reach, proposing theories on the genetic code's origins, the selection of the 20 natural amino acids from many known, and a physical theory of consciousness in bacteria. "Prebiotic Chemistry and the Origin of Life" is more than a trek through the complexities of chemistry and molecular biology; it's an enthralling journey into some of life's most profound existential questions.

  • ISBN : 1468420194
  • Pages : 473 pages

Download or read book Molecular Evolution written by Duane L. Rohlfing and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formuch of his professional career, Sidney W. Fox has devoted his thought and research to studies of molecular evolution. MOLECULAR EVOLUTION: PREBIOLOGICAL AND BIOLOGICAL is a dedicatory vol ume of thirty-five contributed papers commemorating, on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday, his many achievements. The volume had its conception in the USSR (by AIO), had much of its development in the USA (by DLR) , and was made possible by the enthusi astic responses and enc·ouragements of fifty-eight contributors from ten nations and many disciplines. These numbers connote not only the es teem in which S. W. Fox is regarded, but also the international and in terdisciplinary nature of studies of molecular evolution. The term "molecular evolution" is often associated with abiotic or prebiotic evolution; it is also used to denote processes of biotic evolu tion at the molecular level. The point of merger of these two sub-areas, at "life," represents but one stage (albeit a very important one) in the total process of the evolution of matter, from hydrogen to Homo sapiens and beyond. This volume considers aspects of molecular evolution in this broader sense. Accordingly, the contributors include persons ex perienced in the prebiological and also the biological aspects of molecu lar evolution; several "outside" viewpoints are provided by persons whose principal interests lie in other diSCiplines. The contributions are both experimental and theoretical.
